That progressing "where I'm at" diagram in the corner is SO SMART it really makes it easy to see the build progress and see the steps! I'm incredibly impressed. Thank you for the clear instructions and helpful graphics!
Simple yet elegant many of your designs have a Scandinavian influence, practical, elegant, long lasting. Wood working is so satisfying when it's done right. I look forward to more of your videos.
Add a small 1.5 cc honda motor and some tank tacks with a remote controller. That would be the cherry on top of the cake for this awesome bulletproof deck box!
Maybe some gas struts to hold the lid open? They come in heaps of different sizes and pressures. Looks fantastic already, can't wait to see it completed. LED strip lighting underneath the very bottom where the castors are would be pretty cool
I was thinking the same thing as well. Those gas struts hold up suv trunks, should be able to handle that lid. Good ideal about those LED lights. We all know he loves those things.
First off... well built and strong. Suggestion: when you placed the last section of outside decking near the top of the box, instead leav that off and build the lid with a lip on the outside to meet evenly spaced as the other decking. On the top the lip use a solid material that would keep any moisture from settling into the lid. If you overhang the lid by maybe 6 inches to a foot you could also use the storage box as a table as well
Took the words right out of my mouth. It's sturdy and durable, the inset handle was all sorts of clever, but that lid looks like crap. Kept hoping the next step involved putting a border around it or something to hide that glaring white plastic, but no.
@Jared I don't you understand how hard the entire process is. To think of the idea, design many versions of if, keep water out, build it, flim it, edit it, voiceover. You see the end result and instantly see things that could be better. I personally don't think this looks like crap. It's a deck box no fine woodworking. At some point I have to call a project done, but with this one I have to revisit it when the lumber dry and address it again. When this I all painted it will be fine.
@@DIYCreators I have my own workshop, and my own fair share of projects that didn't turn out quite like I'd hoped they would, I know exactly what it's like. But as you say, it's definitely modular and something that can be returned to, and I'd love to see the finished product. Incidentally, I loved your squat rack video so much, I used bits of it in rebuilding mine, which turned out _much_ better than my first attempt.
Yes the progressing "where I'm at" diagram is very nice and gives us a visual cues on the piece that you are cutting which helps with planning the cut list and the build. I really liked the project because it can be put to work right away Bravo!! Plans, Plans Plans !!!
Nice video. I like that you include what doesn't work out as well as the solution to fix it. Thanks for sharing. There are times when designing a project bogs me down so looking at other projects helps me decide how to tackle it.
I really like the way that you work through the process of your builds. You often brought a smile to my face with your logic, because it is all too familiar. An example is when referring to the hinge placement. I have found myself growing tired of “over-thinking it”. Sometimes I must make a decision in my own mind to just pick a way to do it so that the project can move forward to completion. Otherwise I waste a lot of time and/or the project comes to a halt. Your reasoning is very helpful.
I can't believe the timing on this one lol. I am literally taking a break from tearing down my broken couch to build a chest out of for my livingroom! This has definitely helped!
Finally! I've been looking for a lid-waterproofing solution for one of these deck boxes and you're the first one I've seen that addresses this! Thank you!
Great video! I really like how clear your instructions are and the little graphic in the top corner that shows what you’re working on is also very helpful. I actually watched the entire build instead of skipping to the end to see the finished build and then going back. Thanks and keep it up!
I really appreciate that you explain everything you are doing and why you are doing it that way. You explain things easy to understand and not complicated, that even I believe I can make this without it looking like a 1st grader made it. Thanks
Great video Glen! Please consider doing a quick follow-up, to show us how the finishing touches you mentioned go (better self-closing hardware; a stronger handle; painting, etc.). Also, do you intend to finish the interior? The exposed screws from the handle maybe use some attention. Always a delight to see your projects come to life!
Lovely work. Well explained. Two thoughts: use gas struts, you select them by weight they have to work and min/max length. Also consider rope handles from heavy hessian rope, like sailors of old had on their trunks. They look great and could lift the box.
I LOVED this! Excellent Idea; I was stating as you built this that I would have painted the carcass a different color, so when the boards were put on, I would paint/stain the boards a different color. In my humble opinion, it would make that piece pop. Then, as you so explained, it was outdoor wood and needed to dry. Wow I ate my words then! Great idea, that's why I love to watch your videos. Until next project, my friend, Stay Safe and Stay Blessed.
That is a very useful box...easy to build and modern looking! About the hinges, I think hydraulic hinges would be perfect for this...they are rated to support different weight lids.
Good vid. Good blend of personality, knowledge and instruction without wasting lots of time. If I made project, I would skip the plywood allowing for simpler frame. This would save time and weight. Deck boards should be strong enough for purpose in framed correctly.
Love the design and fitting. Very unique use. I have a huge balcony of 8 x 8 with carport below, so I wanted to make seating all around this balcony with bamboo in planters all around the back rail for privacy. I have seen and love your Outdoor Seating designs. Rustic but neat and functional for a large BBQ setting. I only have one thing I would have done different for the storage box. When attaching the outer slats around the box, I would cut them off at 45 degree so they met flush on the corners. I know this is more difficult for some, with tool availability, and too time consuming for others. Its just my opinion... And I am sure you have already thought about that. While I will be designing and manufacturing on a larger scale...your videos and manufacture methods have proven invaluable for my own designs ..thank you for that. I am an architect, yet can still learn something different every day. I build on the function of bring the outside, inside ... and these ideas are a great boost to design train. Keep up the good work, and the good vids.
Very nice piece of handiwork. The video was equally as nice. I really like the cleanliness of the box and your craftsmanship. Now I'm inspired to make one for my patio/deck. Thanks!
Just what I was looking for. I was thinking of getting those plastic bins for storage of a canopy but I thought I'd make one. That's what I'll do. Thanks for the video on how to build one
I love your work man. I learn some really cool things that seem obvious after you show them. I've used some of your tricks to make a "Wishing Well" for my wife last year.
Very nice. I really need to make one like that too! The storage in my benches didn't really work out and a box like this can double as a table or staging area for bbqs easily!
Nice work, I made a toybox for someone very similar to this, I used a pair of Gas Shock Strut Springs to help open, and it help soften the closing when it coming down.
Excellent. I built something similar a few years back, but I didn’t hold up. I agree with a few others that some gas filled lid supports, possibly scrap from an old car’s hatchback. Also, I pitched the top down a bit for rain to not stand too long. But great stuff glen.
That's so smart to store the cushions in a place where they're not getting destroyed by the elements. My parents have had outdoor furniture all my life and they're always having to replace the cushions.
Excellent job, love everything about the box and how you tell where you are in the build process 🥰 Only thing I'm going to do different is rip a long board for the last board on the lid that you attached the hinges to. Mostly just for looks 😁
Very useful build. Typically, you end up with a more satisfying result when you design something yourself. I like that your design incorporates the corrugated plastic on the underside of the lid to keep water out. It rains just about everywhere so why wouldn't a manufacturer make some type of 'water control' or 'anti-water intrusion' feature be standard? Most likely due to cost (frown). Your end result is worth the effort, though. The weight of this project does appear deceptive. I think that gas-pneumatic struts may be a solution to handle the weight of the lid. Yes, they will probably be more expensive but well-suited to the task. Thanks for sharing this design project!
Glen very nice project this week turned out very nice I really like it. Can't wait to see what u make next. Hopefully you get great use out of it my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Wow! I neex to build some oversize boxes...i tend to over engineer the project. I really like how you utilized deckboards and plywood to maximum strength. My mind immediately goes to 2x6s!! A thick section of rope could function as 'handle'. I may do pneumatic cylinders for opening top - similar to the back tailgate hinges on suvs. I was so focused on the details that i failed to notice the 'graphic'. That's a very helpful addition.

@@Bob1Mack yes sir
Best invention in a TH-cam video I've seen in 5 years!
My thoughts exactly!
Please can you give a list of each wood peace’s and the measures !
Thanks
The "Where I'm At" graphic has to be one of the best ideas I've seen on TH-cam. Deck box turned out pretty sweet, too. 👍👍
What I like about your videos is that you don't try to hide your mistakes? Makes me feel good because I make more mistakes than most people.
"Where I am at" and "Oscillating tool at fast forward" are the best :D

Thanks Jeffery! I appreciate it!
Beautiful! Wonderful! Be encouraged--good job!

Awesome! Thank you!

Damn, Sugar Shane Mosley got skills in the ring and workshop

Rather impressive. Always nice to see someone find a solution to a problem.

Yeah, rope was my first thought too!
I'd probably just want to build lifting handles out of wood if I were doing it though.
Exactly what I've been looking for years! Smart idea for the top
