based off of #5... one of my theatre professors always says before all his auditions "The cast is a puzzle. I need to find the puzzle pieces that fit together, not the ones that you smash in and force to fit. If you didnt get the role, it doesnt mean you're bad or that I dont like you, it just means you didnt fit the surrounding puzzle pieces." which then he usually pauses and adds "or that i just didn't like you". gotta keep us humble, i guess 😂
Kevin mentioned if you don't get a lead role, take ensemble. Amen. We've had students do so well in ensemble we picked our next production so they could get a lead or supporting role. Whatever role you get, work hard. Be kind and pleasant, give your best performance in each rehearsal. You may not know it, but in whatever role in which you have been cast, you are auditioning for the next production.
I remember Jason Robert Brown actually made a blog post or something about pianists not wanting to play his music for auditions. His response? "If you're unable to play my music, you're a shit accompanist anyway." Obviously, that's not a direct quote, but it was somewhere along those lines.
OMG thank you! When did the whole "don't audition with a song from the show" start? I remember I was ganna audition for Rent and I practiced "What You Own" and someone in the line was like "No! You'll automatically be rejected do something else." I believed them and at the time I only had a High School Musical sheet music book. I literally auditioned with "What I've Been Looking For" because I had nothing else! SOOOOOOOO yeah I got ensemble lol 😂
My favorite thing about ensemble is getting to make up whatever character you want. In All Shook Up last summer, I was a nameless barfly. Well guess what? She was a drunk named Irene who went by Inebriated Irene with her two friends Rehab Rhonda and Cheryl. Her husband Richard left her 7 years before. It's not like it said anywhere that WASN'T her backstory.
My only hesitation with taking an ensemble role is that it's fucking hard being in ensemble. Those roles can be the most demanding. Even so, I take them when offered.
Love your advice on taking the ensemble role if you get asked. I feel like a lot of people take it as an insult but it shows you had a good enough audition for them to want your in their show. Beggars can't be choosers. Also being ensemble can sometimes mean getting more stage time than the leads.
I always heard 'Don't sing from the show' but the theatre I do shows with, the leads usually sing from the show at the audition and they get the part because they sound so nice with the song. So I took note, and when I audition for Grease, I'm singing Hopelessly Devoted To You. Hopefully that'll land me a lead!
I'm sorry I'm so late in the game in commenting this, but I just need to say this. As a retired actor in musical theater, I 1000% agree with the part where you said if get ensemble, take ensemble. I got ensemble in several shows, and it presented me the opportunity to get to know the people I was working with. There were two shows I got ensemble where the cast was really not that good. But most of the ensemble gigs I took, not only was the cast good at acting, but I actually made really good friends with the vast majority of them. And it actually paid off, because after the last two shows where I was in ensemble, I graduated to being cast as supporting characters, namely Von Husler in Mary Poppins, Winthrop in Legally Blonde, and Finley in Miracle On 34th Street.
MYTH # 6.......Just because Kevin doesn't even reply back to you when you've sent him Audio Demo Recordings and asked him for a simple "Opinion". It doesn't mean your not a promising talent and that you shouldn't keep persevering. What does it matter anyways..... Not being the best singer and failing miserably at hitting those high notes hasn't stopped Kevin from "perservering". BELIEVE IN ONES SELF. THAT'S THE KEY. I'm still a Kevin Fan. Just keeping it real. 👌
I think there are worse things than auditioning with a song from the show you're auditioning for, I was vocal coach for a Hairspray production [we released just two weeks ago], I remember almost 60 or 70 people casted and I swear I heard "There are worst things I could do" from Grease like 15 times [Even though we sent a list of casting songs], so yeah, if I was bored with that song, can you imagine the other coaches and directors? I think it's worse to use a "nothing special song" than a show song
Dude I literally just auditioned with “Moving too Fast” two days ago! I’m so happy I picked it since I really think it fitted the show well and my voice too!
Love that you said we can sing sondheim and brown because I love their music and I always felt like I couldnt sing it. The last tip with the ensemble role is so true, but also so hard at times. Havent been sprinboarded yet because of accepting an ensemble role, but maybe it'll happen soon.
YES!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!! I hate when people say they'll accept ensemble and then refuse a part because they thought they were meant to play lead. Always accept ensemble roles!!!!
I’ve argued with people about singing Jason Robert Brown at auditions, thank you for being on my side. I’ve sang it before and it’s always gotten me the job.
Myth Number 5 really speaks to me. Some good advice a director I know always says before an audition is “this show is a puzzle. And you are all puzzle pieces. Now we are looking for the perfect puzzle pieces to fit into our show. Now you may not fit into this show, but You could fit into another one of our shows.” And that’s a motto I’ve lived by at every audition. Not just at that theater
If only this were true. I just auditioned for Hello Dolly in my community with a Sondheim piece and the accompanist couldn’t figure out how to play it so she just stopped playing halfway through the song and never came back 😰
My freshman year at the Youth Performing Arts School, a friend told me that for Bway dance auditions, they have everyone put their hands together and arch their fingers back. The first cuts are made based on that. Lol
Hallie B Don't just audition with "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Try the love song done by Ariel's sisters! You never know if they'll need a powerful feminine voice to lead the ensemble.
Is it true that you should avoid singing from a show currently on broadway/touring? I've never done it bc I heard that's annoying to do :/ (not like Hamilton or DEH- but if I wanted to do Waitress or Something Rotten, etc....)
I've been told that bc they're going to compare you to the current actor on Broadway singing it instead of just paying attention to you. So if you sing "Till Someone Gets Hurt," they're gonna compare you to Taylor Louderman. I've also been told there's a 5 year rule, not just for Broadway but for any theatre - don't sing songs from shows that theatre has done in the past five seasons. Of course, this is all just someone else telling me this and there's no right or wrong, it just is.
I sang Bring Him Home for my Les Miserables school production and I got the part of Brujon. When I sang Stars for the Solo/Ensemble competition that year... 👏🏻 best 👏🏻 in 👏🏻 site 👏🏻
Myth #5 YES! After my first time behind the audition table this is so true!! Other cast choices 100000% is a contributing and sometimes deciding factor!
Hi! Thank you so much for this. A lot of the times in theaters that I work for they specifically say not to audition with a song from the show. Do you know why they do this? If they do not say this in the audition info, if i can sing the song from the show, should I? It isn't disrespectful or rude? Sorry for bothering you truly, I've just never heard someone say that you can audition with a song from the show before except in one instance where I asked the director to sing "Not While I'm Around" for my Toby audition (and i got it so i trust you). But any suggestions for balancing the audition etiquette while singing a song from the show? Thanks so much!
I see some of these myths buuutttttttt most of the time in regional areas pianists can’t play some complex stuff. I’d rather sing a different song that a pianist can play than having a pianist who can’t play,
Wait, what? It's not like you have a choice in a regional/community audition, you're using the accompanist provided. So you can sing the pants off your Sondheim/JRB song, but the accompanist is blowing it. As an MD, what do you want to see? Barrel along and to hell with the accompaniment? Show enough listening/musicianship to adjust to what the accompanist is doing? Stop and tell the producer that Kevin Lynch says they should get a new accompanist?
So they don't have to hear the same songs from the same show over and over again. If we were doing Wizard of Oz and everyone that came in sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" you would want to jab your eyes and ears out !
I’d like to hear how these audition tips stack up or don’t with community/amateur theater. I know I’ve had audition pianists totally screw up JRB songs I brought in for an audition and then reprimand me for it, but maybe that’s because it’s community level?
I dislike how people hate ensemble roles I love ensemble roles I actually rather be ensemble then a lead because you get to do more things and act in different ways depending on the settings idk if it’s just me but I feel the happiest when I’m an ensemble rather than a lead 🤷♂️
My college class was told by a certain director not to sing JRB at an audition cuz the pianist may not be able to play it. But any accompanist worth their salt knows their repertoire.
@Kevin Lynch What would your opinion be on bringing transposed songs to an audition? I’m a very low alto so it’s hard to find the right songs but is transposing a bad idea?
The Awkward Turtle and what are you doing while singing that song? Standing there with your thumb up your arse? No... you’re playing the character? Don’t sing songs that are out of your range just transposed down. It’s so pointless
For myth number 5 I auditioned for a lead in my schools musical a few years ago and I didn’t get it, and somebody who I thought wasn’t very prepared got it, I was REAL butthurt and was in a bad mood, but then I relised that an Asian with black had and a tenor voice as the lead of legally blonde wasn’t the best choose
So can you just show up to an audition use a song from the actual show? Without having previously sung a different one? Because that's some good new information. Doesn't it depend a lot on the show's casting team, is it actually "safe" and acceptable?
Here’s a question......if it’s a Myth to “not sing a song from the show”, but in the audition notice - it SPECIFICALLY states to not do so........do you advise we do it anyway if we can KILL it? Or as a director - would that exact move kill our chances as we aren’t “taking direction”? I’m a community theater performer and have often wondered this as SOMETIMES.....it’s next to impossible to find an audition song outside of the show I’m auditioning for that can accurately showcase what I have to give for said role. Just curious......
I really want to add Wishing from Phantom to my rep book. I can sing it extremely well, it's a song I feel confident singing, and I am a Christine type. But it's from phantom and I'm worried if I were to bring it to an audition it would be too overdone. Anyone have some advice?
I would say though, the tips about JRB and Sondheim don't really apply to non-broadway level auditions. I've had pianists who couldn't play basic stuff let alone difficult things and even if it's not your fault, you don't want to risk being thrown off by accompaniment you're not used to
I have a lot of acting experience and I am a really good actress (and others say it too) but I CANOT SING, I mean I can but it’s not that good. (Oh btw I can also dance) the thing is I live in California. I’m not moving all the way to New York for a broadway play. My passion is to act. In bigger plays than local ones.🥺
I've always wondered since musicals are getting more inclusive if an Asian-American has a shot at a musical (or Broadway)? Cause I dunno I've always wanted to try theatre but I've always been deterred because I don't fit in the role racially :( (for ex. Very heart wrenchingly at a young age, though I was one of the final four girls who auditioned for Annie (school) I couldn't help but notice the girl who got the part already had red hair :/... I dunno sometimes I just wish I was born with double eyelids and look more... white? (like most Broadway roles) I just wish there were more options other than Miss Saigon (Srry I'm a downer)
This is so detailed and informative! Thank you so much!!!
Why do I continue to watch audition tips videos. I’m not auditioning for anything. I can’t even sing
same lol. I don’t even do theatre I just play the violin
Honestly same
relatable hahahah
Myth #6: Kevin Lynch will NOT rip his own eyeballs out of their sockets if you only sing numbers from Andrew Lloyd Weber musicals.
based off of #5... one of my theatre professors always says before all his auditions "The cast is a puzzle. I need to find the puzzle pieces that fit together, not the ones that you smash in and force to fit. i mean, he's correct. Never had a piano lesson in my life, i never play the piano, and I can struggle through his music with relative ease
OMG thank you! When did the whole "don't audition with a song from the show" start? I remember I was ganna audition for Rent and I practiced "What You Own" and someone in the line was like "No! You'll automatically be rejected do something else." I believed them and at the time I only had a High School Musical sheet music book.

SOOOOOOOO yeah I got ensemble lol 😂
RogerEstradaTV well, always have something else prepared anyway. You need to always have two songs ready MINIMUM.
Theater Geak101 I know that now but that was my first audition ever. Lol
RogerEstradaTV ohh got it. First auditions are the WORST!!! I butchered my first one too😂
My favorite thing about ensemble is getting to make up whatever character you want. In All Shook Up last summer, I was a nameless barfly. Well guess what? meredyth with a y I do that too!
I was a cross-eyed in the opera The Crucible in my undergrad. Had migraines for weeks but it was worth it! Hahaha
Really great debunking! So true! LOVE IT! Live long and prosper!
My only hesitation with taking an ensemble role is that it's fucking hard being in ensemble. Those roles can be the most demanding. Even so, I take them when offered.

Just... don’t sing On My Own. Don’t. Also, thank you so much for this! It’s so nice to hear from someone on the inside of the process.

Holy shit YES take the ensemble if you get it!! Amen!
These videos are so fucking entertaining

Love that you said we can sing sondheim and brown because I love their music and I always felt like I couldnt sing it.
The last tip with the ensemble role is so true, but also so hard at times. Havent been sprinboarded yet because of accepting an ensemble role, but maybe it'll happen soon.

Me at an audition

Me: *I’m sorry*
I’ve argued with people about singing Jason Robert Brown at auditions, thank you for being on my side. I’ve sang it before and it’s always gotten me the job.
Awesome video! Could you react to Mean Girls cast recording I’d love to hear your opinion on it

It baffles me that people would turn down ensemble in a show! I’d sell vital organs to be ensemble in a show 😂
This is so helpful!!
Could you do a video about your favorite duets in musical theatre?
If only this were true. I just auditioned for Hello Dolly in my community with a Sondheim piece and the accompanist couldn’t figure out how to play it so she just stopped playing halfway through the song and never came back 😰
I'm having my first audition on Friday! thank you so much!
this was actually really helpful! Please keep making videos like this
How does he only have 29k subscribers??? HE DESERVES A MILLION!!!
My freshman year at the Youth Performing Arts School, a friend told me that for Bway dance auditions, they have everyone put their hands together and arch their fingers back. The first cuts are made based on that. Lol
pumbaaj wait i’m confused? what does that tell the casting director ?
Little Mermaid auditions in July for me!!! Helpful 😊
I was just in The Little Mermaid! You'll love it, break a leg!
Al Z thanks so much! I am crossing my fingers for Ursula! 😊
Hallie B Don't just audition with "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Try the love song done by Ariel's sisters! You never know if they'll need a powerful feminine voice to lead the ensemble.
İnto the woods audition s for me this month by the way this was a year ago who did you get 😊😊😊

Thanks for this vid wow this is awesome
I need moreeee

I'm just gonna sit and wait for your reaction to the mean girls soundtrack.
I see some of these myths buuutttttttt most of the time in regional areas pianists can’t play some complex stuff. I’d rather sing a different song that a pianist can play than having a pianist who can’t play,

So you can sing a song from the show, even if it's a professional show?
Myth #5 is why I quit acting. But now I’m expressing interest in it again and that’s something I really need to keep in mind.
I do have the same problem, There are giants in my thigh add my belly too
This helped so much, thank you Kevin!
I’m going to try to audition for a show at my theatre & this will definitely benefit me
This is a great audition guide to have on hand! Can you please react to NBC's Rise cast album?
CAN YOU DO A LOVE NEVER DIES REACTION VIDEO
Very very very good advice!!!!
Please react to the Mean Girls the Musical cast recording!!! (Lol why am I shouting that?😂 I just really want you to react to it)
Same!
Question: Why do Casting Directors typically want to hear a Song from another Show?
So they don't have to hear the same songs from the same show over and over again. If we were doing Wizard of Oz and everyone that came in sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" you would want to jab your eyes and ears out !
This literally came out right after I did an audition... THANKS KEVIN, YOU'RE A GOOD MAN :D
I’d like to hear how these audition tips stack up or don’t with community/amateur theater. I know I’ve had audition pianists totally screw up JRB songs I brought in for an audition and then reprimand me for it, but maybe that’s because it’s community level?

Hi! Could you please listen to Little Shop of Horrors! Please! I love this musical and not many people have heard of it
Big Musical Fan I’ve done it several times. Cute show!
My college class was told by a certain director not to sing JRB at an audition cuz the pianist may not be able to play it. But any accompanist worth their salt knows their repertoire.
I love the adhd but I can’t focus with the noise ! Too helpful of a video though! Very informative 👍🏼
Woo i have an audition in a week!
Can you please make another one?! :)
There was a beetlejuice ad before this. Dead mom. My favorite beetlejuice song. TH-cam is spying on me.
This was so damn useful
This was lovely
@Kevin Lynch What would your opinion be on bringing transposed songs to an audition? I’m a very low alto so it’s hard to find the right songs but is transposing a bad idea?
Bad idea. There’s no point in auditioning as a character you’re never going to be able to play.
TheAvesMYSTR I don't think they are saying they wanna audition for the character, I think they are saying to sing a song just for the Audition.
The Awkward Turtle and what are you doing while singing that song? Standing there with your thumb up your arse? No... you’re playing the character? Don’t sing songs that are out of your range just transposed down. It’s so pointless
I would transpose it - I was actually told that was a good idea at a NYMT audition.
Lowri Spear does the Y stand for youth?
My middle school and high school make u do acapella it’s mortifying
loved your.. vídeos
that was so helpful, but one more thing i've heard: "dont sing a song from a show you've already done to audition." is that true or a myth?!?!??
This was so so helpful!! Thanks so much!!!
Kevin, what did you think about Goo Goo Dolls?
You're sensational.
Perfect
For myth number 5
I auditioned for a lead in my schools musical a few years ago and I didn’t get it, and somebody who I thought wasn’t very prepared got it, I was REAL butthurt and was in a bad mood, but then I relised that an Asian with black had and a tenor voice as the lead of legally blonde wasn’t the best choose
Review or react to The Grinning Man if you haven’t already !! Listen to labyrinth
0:30 That was Dear Evan Hansen and then Wicked, right??
I have a question what are some ways to get a audition for broadway?
all these angles I'm shook
This isn't musical theatre but does anyone else think that it would be hilarious to see Kevin react to a montage of Eurovision entries?
I really want to add Wishing from Phantom to my rep book. I can sing it extremely well, it's a song I feel confident singing, and I am a Christine type. But it's from phantom and I'm worried if I were to bring it to an audition it would be too overdone. Anyone have some advice?
İm auditoning with sondheim because im auditoning for a sondheim musical
I hear don't sing Sondheim not because it's popular but because the accompaniment is too difficult.
you should totally listen to carrie the musical ! if you haven't already sdkjflskdjf
if you have, what are your thoughts on it ?
Great tips to know. What if you have a god gifted talent? Does that count?
