Well I wasn't expecting non-stop singing. I love musicals, but non-stop singing can be too much sometimes. Especially since it's really hard to understand what they are singing.
Alex M Stephen shcwartz said he wove in only the first seven notes throughout the score as kind of an f you to the copy-right people because he had such a hard time with lyrics and lines poking fun at wizard of Oz. Eight notes from a song is illegal, but seven isn't!
Les Misérables is really underrated nowadays!! Ya’ll should check out the Original London Cast (the Original Original), it has more songs than the Broadway version and the newer versions have changed lyrics from this version (On My Own has different lyrics in the beginning) and Gavroche has an ENTIRE song (Little People) and its amazing!!! It’s what my mom played around the house when I was younger so it’s really nostalgic,,
I was in awe this entire video. I never learned how to play any instruments, so seeing you be able to play without music OR without looking at the keys and also taking at the same time was so impressive.
Yes! I love Les Mis so much! Every price of the score and the lyrics and the harmonies UGH. And Into the Woods and Wixked are so well orchestrated it's insane. And I'm so happy that something Rotten got a mention too!
Kev, I love how anti-establishment/anti-"the business" you are about Broadway. I have always struggled as a playwright, as an actor, and as a patron of the arts due to the fact that I hate "sell-outs". AKA shows/creators who are just pandering to the masses and giving them what they want vs what story is really in need of telling. It's people like you, and the support you give to weird and obscure musical theater and non-musical theater which helps the little guy like me make a place in this world for ourselves. Much love ❤
I would love to see what you're working on! I feel the moment something turns into an "industry" and has some kind of template or model is when it no longer becomes creatively or artistically centric.. it becomes something else.. disingenuous or a faux sense of reality or some other concocted thing. I call it "The Junk Food" of the music / theatre industry. We see it more and more now especially with the many platforms etc... It's not that it's a problem, but the creativity turns to shit quick
I've wanted to see Wicked since I was seven and I didn't listen to it or learn about the plot or listen to the songs. (Outside of Defying Gravity because you can't escape that one). It's been like ten years now and I still know pretty much nothing about the plot.
Definitely Catherine Practically it's the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda (Galinda) the Good Witch from when the met in school and we're roomates, all the way until West goes Wicked and Glinda has to stop her but the conflict of being former friends comes in the way. I'd say there's more but that's the base line.
Definitely Catherine Same here. I've been wanting to see that show for so long but it's hard for me because the closest good productions are in London and I live on the continent. So everytime I'm there I end up seing other shows (les mis) lol.
If you're looking for shows with unique plots, I would like to offer the following: "City Of Angels" "The Mystery Of Edwin Drood" "Lucky Stiff" "Assassins"
You fucking opened my eyes about Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Wicked. I was in a production of Sweeney Todd and was in Into the Woods twice and I never noticed these themes, so now i have to tell all my friends
I used to like "A Very Potter Musical", but the more I watched it the more I realized it's all ~lulz so randum theater kids inside jokes~ and lost its appeal. These days I like "Oregon Trail", "Twisted", and "Firebringer".
I know you've talked about how you don't like Hamilton, but I'm curious why because there are so many thematic chords for each character that show up (Angelica's Satisfied chord, Burr's Wait For It chord, the My Shot anthem, etc.) throughout the whole show. I'm sure you've talked about why you don't like it before, but I'm just wondering if you've noticed this in the score? Love your videos, you always make me cry laughing 😂
I recently played Little Red in Into the Woods (but only the first act because it was a children’s program lol) but I’m still obsessed with it and I still have post show depression even though it’s been over a month
Overall, I agree re: Wicked. The only major problem I have with Wicked is the dissonance with how some scenes are played for laughs when the content is really serious. For example, after Nessa dies, and Elphaba is mourning. By all accounts, this should be a really dark scene. But every time I've seen a production, Glinda coming turns it into a ~catfight~ for laughs when it should be dark and cathartic for both of them. I'm not talking about the content of the scene, I'm talking about the delivery. I feel like the show and or producers and or producers (not sure whose fault this is) are too scared to slow down and let there be highs and lows.
This was the perfect video to watch after a long hard day of rehersal. I love Into the Woods as well and I'm so glad you picked up on the themes in the score. Thanks for making my day! 💕
"I'm not just sitting my car belting out show tunes as I'm driving to the mall or something" Is he personally calling me out because I do exactly that...
Makena Yo I was in Into the Woods too! I wanted the Bakers Wife but I was Cinderella... High notes were way difficult but I dealt lol. Plus it was the Jr version so it sucked anyways hehe
I absolutely love all of your favorites, and also really appreciate your reasoning to why they are your favorite. You're absolutely hilarious with your criticism that it's hard to get pissed off at you if I don't agree with something you say. Keep posting more, I love you!!
I love Into the Woods! I played Little Red last year and it was such an amazing experience. Wicked is also one of my literal DREAM shows ahh and oh my goD I’m going to be in Les Mis in the summer, you’ve covered literally 3 out of the 4 of my favourite musicals yES
When I hear Sweeney Todd songs I just wanna sing. When I hear the beginning of any song in Les mis get ECSTATIC. 1. Les Mis or Sweeney Todd 2. Mamma Mia (ik many people don't like it but it was the very first musical I ever saw so it has to be there) 3. Into the Woods 4. Wicked 5. Newsies 6. (I love musicals but I haven't seen that many. I want to but I have no way to)
Mine are Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Heathers, West Side Story, Les Misérables, Spring Awakening, Mean Girls, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Newsies.
I sooo agree with literally every choice you’ve made. Basically everyone I know hates the story of pippin but I love it, and talking about the thematic material is spot on, especially how Book of Mormon is just genius
Wicked is my favorite musical. Stephen made it different because the melody to Somewhere Over the Rainbow is copyrighted so he made it kind of as a joke to change was last few notes
I really love Wicked! It was my first musical and will always be my favorite! Though the story strays from the original book it will always have a place in my heart. The score is amazing and it's so much fun to listen to and watch! Honestly it's also one of the few I can sing the whole score of because of the many female characters
I was waiting for you to say Pippin and then it was getting to the end and I was like awe he's not gonna say it. Then you said it and I was like, "yeah!" lol
My favorite musicals are: 1. Passion 2. Rebecca the Musical 3. Elisabeth the Musical 4. The Witches of Eastwick 5. The Far Pavilions 6. The Scarlet Pimpernel 7. The Wiz
I'm doing a production of Into the Woods in two weeks (as in, we're learning the entire show in two weeks), and even though I'm a total nerd over the soundtrack, I never really noticed how thematic it really is. You've really given me something to think about while I'm in the production.
I love to hear that you actually love some, well, modern musical theatre. All your picks are somewhat modern in terms of the history of, even, American musical theatre. As much as you dis it, it's good to see you love it. Lol
I’m so surprised Pippin was on here it is by far my favourite musical! I took part in a production of it a while back, and not knowing anything about it I was sceptical, but I LOVED IT. It annoys me how not many people know about it because that music and the storyline is AMAZING.
My mom isn't too big of a fan of Sondheim, she doesn't like a musical that she can't leave the theater singing more than a couple songs. With Into the Woods, she walked away with Stay With Me and Into the Woods. With Sweeney Todd it was Johanna and Not While I'm Around. I started fangirling about it cause of you and there's an audition coming up in a month exactly, and I want to play Johanna, and I sat her down and said "I know you don't like his style with most of his shows, but here's how it works especially with Sweeney Todd. Listen to the orchestrations! The opening sounds like the cinematic beat drop in a movie but it's a musical!!! And the themes! And the abnormality of Sondheim's melodies works with the abnormality of this show!" and I showed her how the Beggar Woman's Lullaby is present in the dance scene in Poor Thing and how that already tells you that Lucy is the Beggar Woman and then it clicked for my mom. She's now agreed to audition with me for Sweeney Todd. I am going for Johanna, she the Beggar Woman (mother & daughter amirite) and we've never been in a show together and it's been one of our dreams and now she's doing this with me and she's excited for Sondheim and seriously it's thanks to you, Kevin, cause you showed me why this show is so freaking good. Thank you, thank you sir. ... HOW'D YOU LIKE TO SPLIT ME MUFF SIR WE'LL GO JIG JIG Sorry I'll be over here.
I AGREE WITH INTO THE WOODS THAT IS THE FIRST MUSICAL O FELL IN WITH Edit: omg I just got to wicked buuuut due that's a GREAT one too Edit Edit: BOOK OF MORMON YESSSSS
Into the woods was my introduction to musical theatre. I love it so much!!! I always wanted to play little red Riding Hood cause I was so young when I watched it and all that. I learned all the words and I still have yet to be in a musical. Though that's thx to me having stage fright. Also book of Mormon and wicked are amazing oh my gosh!!
pippin was the first broadway i ever saw, and danggg it was a life changer. now that i'm halfway through this comment i have no idea where i'm going with this. but thank you for adding pippin in there, it's way to underrated considering how unique it is.
Woah never noticed that about Giants in the Sky When you said you loved themes I knew Les Miserables had to be on here somewhere, that's, in my mind, one of the most "thematic" musicals ever
Something Rotten! literally saved my life, it is my very favorite musical EVER and I'm so so thrilled you love it too. I'm grateful it opened on Broadway when it did. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be here to watch and comment.... or much of anything.
Add in In The Heights, Hamilton, Rent, and Heather's and those are my favorites...yours and the ones above :) and I actually belt them out all the time :')
I love pretty much all of these (Haven't seen/listened to Sweeny Todd). Just needed to add on for my personal list: Newsies, Secret Garden, Finding Neverland, and Scarlet Pimpernel.
when les mis came out in theatres, someone i know complained that there was "too much singing".... like what did you expect?
jordan pennell omg I know someone who said the same thing! It's a musical so of course there's a lot of singing!
My parents say that all the time I’m like why do you watch it then??
Well I wasn't expecting non-stop singing. I love musicals, but non-stop singing can be too much sometimes. Especially since it's really hard to understand what they are singing.
Brianna Chiavetta its literally a sung through musical mxjsksisksisis
I get what they mean, I feel like more of the likes in les mis could have been spoken rather then sung
"On my own... pretending he's inside me." oh my god i died!!
SAME
SAME
Lol, for anyone that doesn’t know, the original lyrics are “On my own, pretending he’s beside me” 😂
That's what Kevin does when his boyfriend is out of town.
Same
Perhaps Schwartz uses the “over the rainbow” theme and extends it because... it’s unlimited... *mind blown*
YESSSSSS
I WAS THINKING THAT TOO
@@dizzymisslizzy1428 Love your username
Morgan Casey Thanks
I was singing along and then "PRETENDING HES INSIDE ME" IM HOWLING
sometimes i'm sad about the fact that CinemaSins doesn't do (stage) musicals but then i remember that this guy exists...
SAME
Mercy on brad please. If he even gets near cats he'd drown in sins
That's because Cinema Sins' content is humor, like Honest Trailers.
You should watch musical hell
Lynch is a thousand times better than CinemaSins
THE BOOK OF MORMON YES
I'm so glad you mention Something Rotten! because it's honestly such an underappreciated production
Theresa N yes! I love that musical yet people don't know about it or say it's stupid. But it really is a terrific production!
Welcome to the Renaissance.
I *LOVE* how Kevin always finds a way to make songs dirty. "On my own, pretending he's *INSIDE* me" 😂
I never heard over the rainbow in wicked omg I love it much more now
Alex M Stephen shcwartz said he wove in only the first seven notes throughout the score as kind of an f you to the copy-right people because he had such a hard time with lyrics and lines poking fun at wizard of Oz. Eight notes from a song is illegal, but seven isn't!

Matthew Corry I totally agree
Seriously. It is such a delightful show. I feel like it deserved more.
Yass I love that musical!!! It's my favorite everrrrr
right
I know right!!! It's so underappreciated and it's so funny and good

I LOVE Something Rotten and I definitely was nOT expecting it in your list
I never recognized that Over The Rainbow thing with Wicked holy FUCK
I was in awe this entire video. I never learned how to play any instruments, so seeing you be able to play without music OR without looking at the keys and also taking at the same time was so impressive.

Ahhh I'm in Sweeney right now and it's running my life and I adore it and was so happy to see your thoughts on it!!
I know you've talked about how you don't like Hamilton, but I'm curious why because there are so many thematic chords for each character that show up (Angelica's Satisfied chord, Burr's Wait For It chord, the My Shot anthem, etc.) throughout the whole show. Tweedlebean Oh ok that makes sense!! Thank you!
Pippin is life.
Literally life.
The relevance is real.
I recently played Little Red in Into the Woods (but only the first act because it was a children’s program lol) but I’m still obsessed with it and I still have post show depression even though it’s been over a month
i’m all here for pippin receiving the praise it deserves!!! its just..the best.

Do you have any opinions on "A Chorus Line"?

I am so happy I found your channel! You are such a joy to watch!
I sooo agree with literally every choice you’ve made. Basically everyone I know hates the story of pippin but I love it, and talking about the thematic material is spot on, especially how Book of Mormon is just genius

I LOVE that a lot of my favorites made it onto this list YES
you are my new favorite musical theater analyst, glad I found your videos
hahah "pretending he's INSIDE me"
Wicked is my favorite musical. Stephen made it different because the melody to Somewhere Over the Rainbow is copyrighted so he made it kind of as a joke to change was last few notes
The Les Mis portion was pure gold.
I take that back, this whole video is pure gold.
I just finished Into the Woods and it was so FUN! 😊
Kevin! You opened my eyes to all of those musical themes!!!

I really love Wicked! It was my first musical and will always be my favorite! Though the story strays from the original book it will always have a place in my heart. The score is amazing and it's so much fun to listen to and watch! Honestly it's also one of the few I can sing the whole score of because of the many female characters
I agree with everything that just came out of your mouth!!!

I'm doing a production of Into the Woods in two weeks (as in, we're learning the entire show in two weeks), and even though I'm a total nerd over the soundtrack, I never really noticed how thematic it really is. You've really given me something to think about while I'm in the production.
Awwww, sad to see Avenue Q not on this list (mostly because I wanted to hear you talk about it and sing a song from it haha!)
Love your profile picture!
Beth Tiffney Thank you very much! Love Professor Layton!
I love to hear that you actually love some, well, modern musical theatre. All your picks are somewhat modern in terms of the history of, even, American musical theatre. As much as you dis it, it's good to see you love it. Lol
I was so excited when you brought up Something Rotten, I work at a Renaissance and a lot of the humor is very similar. It's really underrated tbh
something rotten is so good! and les miz is my favorite musical.

I love that you taught me something and gave great reasoning
Woah never noticed that about Giants in the Sky
