I love stuff like this When music actually makes sense and reflects the story it's brilliant - musicals that fail to do that usually don't make my favourites list
That's a great comparison, Kevin! I'm actually kind of glad you didn't mention how "Unlimited, my future is... unlimited" was the same as the first notes of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"... since we ALL know that :). But great! LOVE IT!
I already new what you were pointing out because that part of the west side story song reminded me of the end of "No one Mourns the wicked" so yeah. But that is pretty cool how sometimes you can point out things that sound the same in different songs from different shows.
You should do a video like this but for into the woods ( assuming that there is even anything hidden within the score) I remember a video prior where you talked about certain chords being repeated throughout the show
Thanks Kevin always love your videos they are the highlights of my week keep them up gives me something to look forward to I love West side story one of my favorites girl and I did not know that but I am definitely going to sit down and watch wicked never seen it before but anyways keep up the good work and keep posting love you're work. PRIDE.
have you listened to children of eden?? if you have, then you might like the fact that the words “spark of creation” in the song spark of creation match up almost perfectly with the little “c# g# c# c g# c#” sequence that happens in defying gravity over and over :0 also, the trill in the “unlimited” section of wizard and i is repeated many times in eden!! (idk piano terms so idk if trill is the right word for it but 🤷🏼♀️)
I’d recommend people here listen to the opening to the first act of Puccini’s opera “Tosca.” The opening motif and orchestration of it are Wickedly similar (pun intended)!
You're very talented, but are you ever *not* sarcastic, angry, and hostile? These moods and emotions make it hard to appreciate all your amazing insights!
“There’s a place for us.”...”Wicked!” .....”I want to be in America!” Bernstein stole from the best. Then Schwartz stole from Bernstein. Then “the cat came and ate the goat” (Had Gadya). Everyone steals from everyone, had gadya...
Idk if this is true but when I was doing Bernstein's "Mass" someone told me the tritone used to be banned in medieval times from being used in compositions because it was an "evil" interval.
I love these kinds of videos you make, where you just sort of dissect a song and bring out all the clever elements that you may miss

uhhhh is it bad that ive been putting off west side story for so long that you spoiled it for me 😂
How can you spoil West Side Story?? It's Romeo and Juliet. Everyone knows the plot of Romeo and Juliet.
It's Romeo and Juliet
emilia me too 😂😂😂
Please do stuff like this more often, you seem to have a lot of knowledge of musical easter eggs and there so cool and enlightening
boi do this with other shows

LOVE it when you share these lil gems!
Very similar thing happens in the funeral sequence of Parade for very similar reasons too
What are your opinions on Andrew Rannells

Tony Vanalsdorf Where did you watch it?? I'm from Spain and I'd really like to watch it, but I can't find it complete anywhere on the internet
OMG..... 💣💣💣💥💥💥 (MIND BLOWN)! I never realized this!! Thanks Kevin 😄

I am playing the show now for a production in NJ (usa)... SOO many Wicked-isms in Children of Eden it's nauseating..

That's so cool! You should totally do this with other shows.
I just might do that! Which shows?!
Perhaps some Sondheim? I'm honestly drawing a blank on two musicals that share motifs like that.
Trey Northcutt def will do that!
Considering Stephen Schwartz wrote Mass with Leonard Bernstein this makes sense! He must have been influenced by him to do that
Basically a Broadway conspiracy theory
I see wicked. I click.
“There’s a place for us.”...”Wicked!”

Same for Book of Mormon and sound of music

I thought you were going to talk about how the line "Unlimited. My future is unlimited." uses the same notes as "Somewhere over the rainbow."
You’re a genius!
*mind blown*
This is cooool
You can blow my...mind...whenever you want.
Also a bit like the end of Saigon in some ways ...
THIS IS ALSO IN OUR LOVE IS GOD IN HEATHERS!!! It’s a bit different but it’s close (at the end of the song of course)
