@@Jeffersonia120 I heard he also created his own recording Studio: Spliced Bread Productions and most of the titles have been some of the recent Netflix anime shows. Also Tony Oliver is in the same boat as Bob Bucholz as he seems to do mostly voice directing these days primarily at Bang Zoom!
Bob Buchholz! You really outdid yourself this time. Thanks a lot for the shoutout at the end. This is a great second part and I learned a few new things. You certainly have a keen eye for details and I never guessed Rachel's birth date actually meant anything. We already discussed this, but despite this being a very worthy part two, there's lots of other Outlaw Star info that couldn't make it into the video. (Some of which we're still halfway through translating.) I am the owner of Outlaw Star Nexus, an Outlaw Star forum. For a long time we've been translating the manga on/off but it's gaining a lot of momentum now and we're on the third volume. If you're interested in the manga, come visit! We're also discovering a lot more information about Outlaw Star 2: Sword of Wind by translating documents that (currently) can't be found online. Sunrise was considering a second season (not necessarily the Sword of Wind OVA), with Gene Starwind facing a new villain called Gamron who used to be Suzuka's lover. A ship smaller than the XGP called the Muramasa was to replace the Outlaw Star, and the Anten Seven pirate Shimi was to make an appearance, owning his own ship called the Murasaki Gasumi-tou. Gamron's ship was called the Sensyu, and featured four grappler arms, and features that made it even better than the MacDougall Brothers' El Dorado/Shangri La. Once again, thanks for the shoutout and I hope some fans will learn a few new things from this comment! :D (LOTS more to come! We've got piles of pages to translate.)
^^^^^ This. The progress on the Manga and supplementary materials (including the Light Novel shown in the video) has been really impressive lately. I recommend to anyone who's interested to pay a visit to the Outlaw Star Nexus
clearly you're the guy to go to about Outlaw Star info. I'm curious if you've done any digging into the similarities between Outlaw Star and Firefly. they're too similar to be a coincidence.
I hope you see this comment Bob, Outlaw Star is one of my favourite childhood animes, and you brought Gene to life for me so thank you and all the best.
I'm impressed that you caught the Cordwainer Smith reference. He's my favorite author in the "weird-ass sci-fi" genre (he also coined the term Instrumentality of Man, though I'm told that Hideaki Anno was unaware of it). Similarly, the concept of 龍岩 ("dragonite") being discovered in a meteorite and being used in a space drive is lifted from E.E. Smith's "Skylark of Space," and "ether" and "sub-ether" are also Smith-isms. And red hair and the name MacDougal also figure highly in the Lensman books. Heck, the assassin Leilong wears a dang Lens. The whole thing is a love letter to pulp sci-fi. (I was the translator on the show, BTW. There's an art book that has an interesting worldbuilding essay that goes into detail on the tech, the speed differences in FTL drive grades, and so on.)
I have an amazing story. One time I was driving home and I felt the presence of the Lord, come down to me from above. I started getting chills and I felt so comfortable with Him. I knew if I asked Him to play a song on the radio, He would. So I said "Ok Lord, play Come as you are..." I didn't know what station it was on or anything, but I turned the radio on and the song started playing right on the spot, perfectly... I started getting flooded with chills inside, and started crying. When I got home, He stayed with me for 10 minutes till I got out of the car. I've been getting answered prayers for around 5 years since, because that visitation eliminated doubt and I follow Biblical instructions as best as I can.
Outlaw Star made such a huge impact on me growing up. It greatly inspired my love for Anime, Space, and Voice Acting! Bob, if you're reading this, I want you to know that your voice as Gene Starwind played a large part of this inspiration. Your work is truly appreciated! Outlaw Star will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Absolutely loved Outlaw Star, went out of my way to see it as soon as I could once I got home from school, even have a model of the actual Outlaw Star ship floating in my game room, great anime!
Man.. So awesome to hear the voice of Gene again. Outlaw Star is such a great blast from my past. Takes me back to a better time in my childhood. Thanks for this one!
Wow, it's so cool to hear Bob's voice again as Gene Starwind. Freaking love Outlaw Star! I'm gonna have to grab a screenshot of the original design of the Caster Pistol! That thing looks awesome!
I'm getting such a Toonami flash back here. Outlaw star aired on cartoon network about six months before bebop did. I remember the first time I saw bebop I kept thinking man this is just like outlaw star. Little did I know they were both by the same studio,$unrise.
First, I get to hear Emilie Brown, the voice actress of Melfina, return to her role as Melfina for a dub of the series pilot. Then I find out about this, and I get to listen to Bob Buchholz, the voice actor for Gene Starwind himself, provide fascinating trivia for my favorite show of all time. How can this week get any better? You better get ready, because I'm stoked to find out! But seriously, thank you Did You Know Anime, and thank you Bob Buchholz. Even since I first saw Outlaw Star on Toonami, it has held a special place in my heart. It's helped me get through some really stressful times in my life, and has brought me so much happiness. So to stumble upon such an amazing love letter to the series, with the leading man himself bringing me new facts I wasn't even aware, is such a joyous occasion. I cannot even begin to express just how deep my gratitude is for having put this together. Never stop being awesome!
Thank you DidYouKnowAnime for all the hard work your staff puts into these. The nostalgia is real. And it's much appreciated. Yall work so hard to put out great content and it shows! So thank you!!
Great video! Outlaw Star is still one of my top five favorite anime of all time, and Gene (along with his badass English dub voice) was a big reason why.
You might wanna look into _Coyote Ragtime_ too then. Personally, I thought it was pretty enjoyable though not quite on the same level as any of those. It's that same kind of thing though; space western as can be. Whole thing felt like ufotable's attempt to do a Cowboy Bebop-type show. Heck, even the name seems pretty much just an "homage" to Cowboy Bebop (the term 'Coyote' in the series refers to criminals and pirates, so it's got the same the same "Lawless person + type of music" thing going on) It's also on TH-cam entirely for free, since it's one of those shows like _Vandread_ that Funimation picked up when they acquired ADV Films' old library, but they don't seem to see any value in monetizing old stuff that isn't popular :P Here's the first episode if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/N28Ey7u-HgQ/w-d-xo.html
Iconic voice! He made such an impression on me despite not being in that many titles. But at the same time if you were a fan of anime at the time you were bound to hear him: a bit part in Akira, a very creepy but somewhat tragic character in Trigun, a goofy villain in the Big O. But nothing captured his voice like this role. He exudes so much confidence, but also nonchalance, there's a bit of luke skywalker mixed with indiana jones - and also a good bit of vulnerability and self-doubt especially in the early going. He gets the best lines, he gets to have some of the best moments. But not every dub of this era is great. The outlaw star dub is outstanding and he was a big reason why.
always happy to learn more about one of my favorite anime and always happy to hear Bob's voice as well cause whether he likes it or not his voice is very nostalgic to me since I love the dub of this show so much a shame he couldn't continue his voice acting but who knows what the future holds? he could come back under the right circumstances am I right?
Man, these vids are always so well-produced and loaded with cool info! _Angel Links? Future Retro Hero Story? [DOGS]_ and _Black Mind_ (at 5:02)? Why do I try relaxing whenever I start watching these things - I should know by now I'm going to have to Google a lot of these things! (^-^)

Just an aside on the topic of English voice actors, but it was only learned earlier this month that the voice of Gwen Khan, Richard Barnes (aka Milt Jamin/Milton James/whatever his real name is) had died of complications from a stroke. RIP
Urt, Ark and the old guy are all characters from Future Retro Hero Story. They're inclusion in the XXX Too Hot For TV episode was some kind of in-joke.

Holy Shit the actual Voice of Gene.
Great to hear Bob's voice again. I legitimately got teary-eyed when he referenced Gene's iconic, "And, of course, the Outlaws," line at 5:26.
My acting coach, Peter Spellos, was the voice of Gilliam in the English Dub!!! Can’t wait to show this to him!
That guys was awesome. Good actor
Lucky!!!!
I wish I could have him as a teacher!
Absolutely loved Gilliam!
Nice to hear your voice again Gene👍
Really wish we get a new Outlaw Star series.
I'd even settle for an OVA about that Eldorado light novel explained in the video. It's too bad we got Angel links instead....
Shendowx Outlaw Star and Vandread both are series I wish we got sequels for.
I was taken aback when I heard him. It’s always great when a voice actor is also a fan.
...and not the terrible one that they had planned *where Gene ditched the entire rest of the cast...*
Count Frackula Was that really the idea behind the sequel?
Why would Gene ditch his crew?
Melfina is necessary for the Outlaw Star to function.
It's a shame he doesn't voice act anymore he's got a great voice
He mostly directs nowadays. and plays little bit parts in those titles.
I was wondering if he did VA anymore. Now I am sad. :(
