Ah, yes. Urusei Yatsura, the story of an idiot and a space princess. It's nice to see a historic anime getting some recognition with DYKA. Here's to hoping we get more stuff from the golden age of anime.
Thank you for this one! Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer was one of the first Anime I ever saw, one summer in the 90s on the Sci-Fi channel. The surreal music and setting, the story of love and the concept of living in a dream world. It was the beginning of a wonderful, lifelong passion. To this day, Beautiful Dreamer is still my favorite movie of all time.
Fucking thank you...I hated this anime and the manga.....also hate Ranma1 1/2 and inuyasha for the same exact reasons. The characters are pretty bland and show no real growth....they just feel the same throughout the series. I honestly think she can't write characters .
Given her other work, Takahashi probably wanted nothing to happen in the story. Oshii, on the other hand, likely wanted something to actually happen, hence the conflict.
brningpyre Nothing outward. I like rumiko's work because she changes the character on the inside. The characters end up where they begin but with a new perspective as to what they want. With mamoru, i get the feeling he wants to jump the end and resolve any issues al la deus ex machina. Like ghost in the shell is great. Didn't really bring up or explore the question "am i a person when im all machine?" the major is literally emotionally fixed by a magical machine. Tldnr rumiko is the tortoise oshii is the hare. Ones good for anime ones good for manga.
The part about director Oshi is spot on. If you know his work, then you know when he does a movie from an already existing tittle, he takes his own spin on it. This is more noticeable on Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor.

Well I got good news for all of you, Viz is going to be re-releasing the manga with new translations and proper right-to-left artwork starting this year, 20 years after they gave it up for dead due to poor sales.

Ahhhh yes, Beautiful Dreamer... the first anime I ever watched, even before Toonami was a thing, staying up late sometime around ~1995 and seeing it on the Sci-Fi channel. At the time, I was under the impression *all* anime was supposed to be weird sex pervert stuff and though that wasn't entirely changed by watching this, I started to realize it's so much more. Also that Lum is hot.
This was one of the first mangas I've read when I got into anime. Fave moments were the times when Lum slept over at a friend's house as a kid. She'd wet the bed, switch places with the friend, and that friend gets a the blame
Back in the day, everyone thought Lum had to have an "exotic" accent from the manga (because of the "da-tcha!" thing) and you can hear early dub attempts trying to make her sound like Zsa Zsa Gabor. Central Park, OTOH, had never seen the show in their lives, dubbed what was there in Dreamer by ear, and Roxie, you NAILED Lum's voice (and Ten's) for the first time ever. Shannon Settlemyre in AnimEigo's later movie dubs made just as wise a decision. :)
Not to mention 6 or so movies. I got upto episode 178 or so a few years ago... I should really watch it all the way through. I've read the Manga twice and i'd recommend that as well.
Otaking Mikohani It does get tedious after a while since a lot of the time Urusei, more or less, stays the same. If you're gonna want to complete one of Rumiko's early works, I highly suggest Maison Ikkoku. It's 96 episodes (a far cry from both Urusei and Ranma).
I've watched Beautiful Dreamer and 2-4 dvds of the series and I think that Beautiful Dreamers was far better than what the series creator could had hoped to make.
A good collection of factoids and behind-the-scenes infobytes. I've no doubt that an entire "Companion" book could easily be written about this series, because there just seems like so much to write about. Yes, the puns and wordplay, the Japanese mythology, history, and cultural references, even food. When watching with a group of friends, whenever someone mentions the word on the show, everyone in the room should shout out real loud -- "BEEFBOWL!"

This anime arrived to Spain during the early 2000s (after 20 years when it first came out in Japan) when I was a kid, and it was and it is my favorite anime and second of favorite manga. The spanish dub was surprisingly good, now I'm re-watching and re-reading the manga and it 's definitely the best. I've watched lots of episodes in japanesse and english but what really brings back my memories is when I watch it in spanish.
I remember way back when all the way back in I believe 95 I saw the movie beautiful dreamers aired on the sci-fi channel with several other anime movies. It was like they would show different genres of movies throughout the summer on the sci-fi channel and one of the genres was anime and it was the 1st time I ever saw anime and this was in 95 which I believe was before toonami aired on cartoon network. I barely remember the other ones, I think one involved robots and implanting people's minds in robot bodies and the protagonist were like a young boy and some woman and in one scene they go to Pluto and meet this woman whose robot body had no face because of how beautiful she was when she was human and she was like crazy. And I think another one was were a bunch of people went to fight on an island and they fought the God Mars who possessed somebody at the end then another one started out with a guy at like an amusement park pretending to be a robots like he worked there and that was his job and that's all I can remember of most of the anime movies. Except for beautiful dreamer I don't know why that one stuck out maybe because it was more kid friendly and I think I watched it the whole way through or maybe because it was so balls to the wall from what I've ever seen before at that point I was like 6 at the time. Then a couple years ago I re-watched it on TH-cam and… It was not as great as I remembered it… Probably because I was 6 when I saw it the 1st time and I probably had to be a fan of the show to really appreciated and it's also a kids movie from what like the early 80s maybe I'm just guessing at this point. But it is a part of my early life and sort of like a gateway drug to the world of anime and I guess I'm thankful for that

FYI maybe you already know that in the BBC dubbed version Ataru Moroboshi voiced by the guy from Little Britain and Lum voiced by the girl best known for his role as Roz Harmison in the Goal! Movie

Oh, I was wondering if the Mamoru Oshii issue would be brought up at all. It reminds me of the issues regarding the Fruits Basket anime where Natsuki Takaya kept urging for Akitaro Daichi to put high profile voice actors into the show and disliked the character designs.
2:06 I saw a few episodes of this show last year for the first time Lum's appearance kinda freak me out at first with her sharp teeth and horns were I thought she was a demon instead of a alien. I 've seen in the sub titles that some of the characters called Lum Oni girl which I didn't know what it meant I of should put Oni on google to know what it meant.

Like you wouldn't believe. If you're a fan of Rumiko Takahashi's work then you'll see her first popular work set the stage for all of her work that follows. The comedy is great, plenty of lovable characters with their own bit of history derived from Japanese mythos.
Do you really think that it needs one? Yeah, we could have it revamped: have the aliens get a new form of technology, have a more rational view towards some of their stances on modern issues, tighten up some of the character dynamics and aesthetics, etc; but again I ask, do we really need one? I don't know if the same amount of effort would be put into it with all of the big names that originally got their start from this anime having their own franchises to deal with, the voice actors/actresses have moved on to bigger things or have retired, etc. I'd rather keep what we have than for it to turn out like the new Sailor Moon: more animation errors than the original, secondary characters being pushed to the back, not referencing the previous anime or the manga content that much, and character revamps that look downright hideous. Plus many instances of the show references the era of disco and go-go. I don't want them to try to shovel in too much of modern culture into the show that takes the audience out of that era.
