    Having obliterated almost every opponent during 1985/86 I always look at 87 as Tyson's apprenticeship year at top level. He fought two 12 rounders, a round 6 ko and a round 7 ko. That experience was invaluable and set him up for 3 devastating victories in 1988.
    Tucker on that night fought his best fight and would have given any heavyweight of any era problems.

      @basecamp84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Yea... every one thinks Tyson never went the distance... or was not able to keep up his relentless style of fighting for 12 rounds ... you can see in multiple fights during this era his ability to last the whole fight was evident

    • @dvrmte
      @dvrmte 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@basecamp84 He could go the distance but he did lose his punching power as the fight went on. According to the stats, if there was a knockout in the last half of a fight, Tyson was more likely to get knocked out than to knock out his opponent. He's still one of the greatest of all time though.

      He’s beaten Olympic gold medal winners who were undefeated as professionals when they faced mike & if he didn’t ko them he won almost every round against them. He beat heavyweight champions & former heavyweight champions & if he didn’t ko them he once again won almost every round against them. You have to understand that the standards are always changing when talking about Tyson. They hate him so much they discredit other fighters just to discredit him. Also not every guy was afraid of mike when they fought but it still didn’t matter, they were dominated the same way the other fighters were. In his 37 fights with Rooney he never once was cut, swelled up or bruised! That’s insane man cause he was there to be hit. He constantly came forward & got inside close but it was still so hard to catch him clean. Had he stayed with Rooney they would have had too ask Mike to retire cause he was not getting be beat.

      Sure, but Tucker had a broken hand. Tyson beat a one handed Tucker; and lost to a healthy Douglas who happened to train and show up. The truth is that Tyson never beat any of his peers at their peak: Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis. Tyson was a prodigy who was done before he even turned 24. Tony Tucker was a very underrated fighter who for some reason could never land big fights except on two occasions. He had this competitive fight with Tyson at his absolute best. He lost to Lennox Lewis in 1993 but that's when he was a little past it and he still gave Lewis a pretty good fight Even George Foreman wanted nothing to do with him, which I suspect was because Foreman simply wasn't interested in a tough fight after beating Moorer. Though at that point in his career Tucker was no more dangerous than Shannon Briggs who Foreman fought a couple of years later so its rather curious. But with a little better management and promotion Tucker had the potential to be an ATG.

    WOW! I actually watched this fight live in Vegas with some friends on Aug 1st, 1987, the day before my 19th birthday. During the match Michael Spinks and his entourage walked right past us and sat just a few rows above where we were sitting. Between rounds the crowd would turn to where Spinks was sitting and taunt him into challenging Tyson for a title bout. Almost a year later that matched happened.
    Ironically, James Buster Douglass was on the under card for the Spinks match, and nearly 2-years later "Tokyo" Douglas would accomplish the biggest surprise upset in sports history. Great times to be a young guy and following the fight game.
    PS- And nooo...... I didn't wake-up the next morning with a Tiger in my hotel bathroom. That happened during my Vegas bachelor party years later.

    For the folks on here saying Tucker was just trying to survive: 1) I'm not sure what fight you were watching.
    2) You dont know very much about boxing. Tucker had injured his right hand in Training (the announcers actually allude to this fact during the fight.) It is very clear that he reinjures that hand in round 4. Tony was landing that punch over and over until then. Post round 4, he stopped throwing the right. Sadly, devastated by the belief that an injured hand had kept him from glory Tony Tucker fell into drug addiction for years after this fight.
    What was really important about this fight that many of you are missing is Tucker laid down the blue print for how Iron Mike would be defeated. Indeed it was the very same punch - the right uppercut, that was Tyson's undoing in Tokyo.

Tucker was somewhat competitive but spent a lot of the fight holding Tyson. He did what he had to do to survive the 12 rounds. He did not use his right hand enough as he had hurt it while training for this fight. Like I said before, this video was edited very well but is not representative of how good the fight actually was. Tucker and Tillis were tough enough to go the distance with a prime Mike and showed when you put a well trained heavyweight with skills and heart in front of him Tyson is no longer quite the killing machine he was against scared fighters like Spinks. I feel half of Tysons success in the ring were the mediocre competition he faced throughout his career. @@Aamo2023 Buster couldn't finish Tony Tucker or Holyfield. They Both stopped Douglas. Tyson got Knocked Out. Lewis and Holyfield Knocked Out Tyson. They're the ones with Titanium Chins. Why are you praising Tyson?? Quick Tillis beat Tyson in my opinion but was STOPPED by Holyfield. Why are you praising Tyson? Tyson did HORRIBLE against Top Competition.

      @@thespy7795 That many punches will eventually wear you down, especially at heavyweight. Holyfield had a granite chin and so did Tucker, I’m not talking about who beat who, I’m saying Tyson can definitely take a fucking punch, if you watch ANY of Tyson’s fights you’ll see that. It looks like you just don’t want to give credit where it’s due, or you just go off of what fat fucks who have never boxed a day in their life have to say in the comment section. And how in the hell did you give that fight to Tillis? 😂 Man I’m not even gonna waste anymore of my time with you. Clown.

    I think in the later rounds Tony lost his focus and got out from his gameplan thats why he lost. Maybe if he would continue his gameplan we would knew him as the winner. But its a very big achievment to go 12 rounds with Prime Mike Tyson
