Larry Holmes was not old and washed up at this time but he was definitely past his prime
Holmes fought another 25 times after this, including three title fights (lost all three but came close twice). He was past his best but not washed up.
He still would of beat Holmes in his prime and he's not that old,only 38hes getting there but still has time..but I agree with beating a washed up Ali..

Holmes sxpected to be able to use his reach advantage to jab at Tyson, but he was overwhelmed by Tyson's attacking style.
His mistake was not being able to keep on the move .. due to his age and inactiveness . Mike had trouble putting away tall fighters , that could stay on the move with a good jab . Example Tucker , Tillis . You can't stand in front of Mike not moving and being a target .
This was Holmes FIRST fight out of retirement. He ws 38, and past his prime. A prime holmes wouleve brought an entierly different fight to the table. You gotta admire him taking this fight
The story of how he came to take this fight is a good one. Don King knocked on his door and said "Larry, I got a fight for you." Holmes asked "Who do you have in mind Don?" King replies "Mike Tyson". Holmes surprisingly says "Mike Tyson? Man, I can't beat that kid, I've been retired for 2 years". King replies "I'll give you 3 million dollars". Larry replies "Where's Mike at?"

Wow watching this as an adult; mad respect to Tyson. He was too short and couldn’t angle in but still connected when it counted. Must have been so frustrating in the moment not being able to angle in on that big frame to unload

Well, you got one thing right, you're no boxing expert, and you certainly don't know anything about Tyson, Holmes, or Ali if you think Tyson would 'carry' one of the best of all time (and still a dangerous opponent even way past his prime and retired for 2 years) to try and deliver more blows for something to do with Ali because Ali fought Holmes 8 years earlier needing cash, and his friend and former sparring partner Holmes obliged him and gave him an 8 million dollar payday.

You forget Tillis and Tucker went the distance with Mike . Larry was better than Tillis . The young Larry would have been moving .. If Tillis could do it Larry could too in his prime .

Back in the day Holmes had a jab that could stagger if not drop many of those he fought. He must have left it home that night.
That legendary jab with precision and force was just a shell of itself at the age of 38 and retired for 2 years, and Mike Tyson was no Ossie Ocasio (a smallish heavyweight Holmes knocked down with a jab in his prime). Even as a shell, once Larry started training seriously again, it was still a good enough jab to baffle and beat a young Ray Mercer while over 40 years old.

You have to stop and think for a second .....and take it on board....tyson was 21, undisputed and cleaning the division out...brushing the old guard aside with ease and taking no prisoners...no wonder he says he lost his youth to boxing.at 21 i was still figuring my way through lifes maze let alone knowing what i wanted to do..he was a wrecking ball with one purpose.......destruction and pain....glad he's got his faculties intact and is enjoying his life.
Interesting that tyson said about this fight that had he fought a much younger larry holmes that he would have lost because larry was one of the few heavyweights that could knock you out with his left jab!!
The young Larry would have been able to do this all night at 4:47 keep moving .. and keeping Mike at a distance with his long jab . Mike can't ko what he can't catch and connect . Plus Holmes jab was much faster in his prime .
