I first became aware of Talk Talk as a kid when watching chart shows on TV, this was the early eighties and me being the eight year old Dutch kid, didn't speak a word of English yet. But it was the sheer tone of their songs which told me more than any translation of the lyrics would have told me.
Because although Mark greets us by saying "Hello, how are you?" in the beginning of the video for "such a shame" and is seen laughing and grinning throughout, even back then I KNEW this was NOT a happy song. It took me a full decade before I not only understood what that song was saying but I also was living through what that song was saying.
Also and I'm pretty sure everybody agrees with me on this: I urge everybody to seek out Mark Hollis' solo album, it's basically the lost Talk Talk album. The album follows the "Laughing stock" experimental jazz template but is altogether far less dark and claustrophobic. It was more a sigh of relieve, a beautiful sunset. Hollis didn't want to do a tour to support the album, stating that "It shouldn't be played live."

I must say that currently I am more shocked than saddened about the news of Mark Hollis death, especially because he isn´t being mentioned by the many thousands that should do it in the music Industry. Not even the synth pop family, the Depeche Modes, or the Portisheads and whatnot. If we were talking about an elite of people that listened to some sort of twisted, incomprehensive twisted sounds, but TALK TALK was the thing in the 80´s. It touched so may hearts and souls over the years. I must say this is "such a shame"

Mark Hollis was before his time, Radiohead got all the attention years later but Hollis did all of it so, so long before that! No mention sadly of his exquisite solo album "Mark Hollis" check out "A Life (1895 - 1915)". Every nuance, every sound and space (I hesitate to say) but it is perfect!! I guess eventually, like all true greats he will be recognised but sadly after he is gone. Like many others my personal favourite is "I believe in You", such moving and pure beauty in this wonderful piece. He took us to the core, the essence of what contemporary music can be and left us to simply marvel at it and pick things up from there.....glad to have been on the planet at the same time as this marvellous man

Can't believe Mark has gone, deverstatingly sad!!
I'm just so glad I saw them live in 1982 on what was their first ever headlining tour following the success of their debut album!!
My Talk Talk top 5 would be:
    1. Candy. 2. Call In The Night Boy. 3. Talk Talk. 4. Have You Heard The News? 5. It's My Life.
RIP Mark, it's absolutely criminal that you never got the credit or the level of fame that your amazing talent fully deserved!!
Yet people like Just in the beaver, One erection, Ed cure for insomnia Sheeran
and Adele: (you should get a free razor blade when you buy one of her CD's so you can end your life properly from the depressing music) do!!
My, What a crazy mixed up world we live in, full of people who's musical taste is in their backsides!!

What a truly amazing band that will transcend any decade time and space and Mark Hollis will be sadly missed. I have never heard music like it before or after 1998 and never will again it just the magic tones of Hollis that has you transfixed from the first note. I have to say that I love all the albums but Such a Shame, Talk Talk, My Foolish Friend,Today Happiness is Easy, life is what you make it, it's my life and The party over are just some of the amazing classics that make the 80's so great. Without Talk Talk in our lifes we wouldn't have music so diverse as it is and my life wouldn't be a rich as it is for having them in it. You can turn to there music for what ever mood your in and go and have a listen as it will change your life for the good.

Steven Wilson expressed that he really wanted to do a remix of the "Colour of spring" album since that to him was the album which opened his eyes to what complexity in music could be like.
He got in touch with Hollis who replied with two words: Not Interested.
No matter what credentials Wilson brought to the table, Hollis wouldn't let him come near to his vision of that record, which Wilson says he totally understands and respects.

    Today

Still a criminally underrated band both on their albums and in their live performances. Mark Hollis and the boys is like Robert Smith and The Cure; they sound better live, nowhere in the venue was a bad seat and they never hit a wrong note. They couldn’t sound bad if they tried. Extremely rare for bands of any generation.
I did have to fight some Gen Zika kid who told me that Gwen Stefani wrote It’s my life and Talk Talk covered it. They were aggressive about it. They thought that they were going to school a crusty Gen X Synthbaby and Elder Goth on 80s New Romantic bands. They had to cry in their safe space when I was done with them. I don’t tolerate musical ignorance and I will gate keep what is mine. I showed them Live in Dortmund 1984 and made them cry. I asked them which is the bigger number 1984 or 2009? I don’t care to remember when that trash was vomited onto the airwaves. After rapid firing the question of which is greater than or less than and bo,barding them with as many clips of TT performing it’s my life, they finally got it through their heads. If you want to fight me over cover version vs the original, you better know what you’re talking about. I’m autistic, an absolute trainspotter and music, especially new wave 80s is something I fiercely protect. There is no excuse for being musically ignorant. Not being born then is no excuse. I have a near encyclopedic knowledge of that decade. I can name you the band, the album title, the year it was released, what side of the album the track was on and the songs that preceded and followed the track. If any at all.
To say I laid absolut waste to this kid is putting it mildly. I even guessed their mum’s name ( it was crystal ) and told them I would literally fight their mum in the school parking lot to prove my absolute dominance. The last bit is a joke, but push comes to shove, I will go toe to toe.
Music is so incredibly important, to ignore its history and the original creators is insulting to the art form. You don’t need to be a trainspotter, but if the song you’re hearing sounds too good, there’s a very good chance it’s a cover version. Gen Zika trying to claim Running up that hill as their song because stupid tv show. No. You don’t own running up that hill. Gen X does. If you can’t remember the awe you felt as you watched the music video for the first time and obsessively waited for it to come on radio so you could tape it or rewinding the tape over and over to hear Kate sing "So much hate for the ones we love, tell me we both matter, don’t we?" and feeling like it was written just for your 6 year old ears alone. Felt it nestle into a spot in your heart that you knew was forever changed because of it. The magic of discovering YOUR very first song.
I don’t think people think of that. Of the deep importance those artists played in our lives, so naturally you want to know what moved them! Who did they listen to? What was their first song? As I lose more of the voices of a youth that I was so sure would end at 12,the more fiercely I protect those artists that literally kept my irreparably broken heart beating for one more day. There is no doubt that I would not be here if I never heard Today at age 7 or Renee. Or mirror man. A voice so pure and distinctly his own, that I would know it anywhere.
I still struggle when I realize there will be no reunion. No chance to hear that voice in person. I want to freeze him in time, so I never lose the feelings I felt the first time I heard his voice.
This post is too long. It’s 6 minutes to 4 in the morning and I’m on a tangent. Thank you, Mark, for every note that wasn’t played. For the space between your words. I can’t imagine who I might have turned into without your music. Probably someone less prone to rambling tangents at 3:58 in the morning.

I was lucky enough to get them first time round, as it were. So I heard, "It's getting late in the evening" as the B side to the vinyl single of 'Life's what you make it" when it was originally released. It's so beautiful, so very, very magical. All I could think was, "What a vocal melody, what nuance, what a sophisticated arrangement." It's a very sad song, but the kind of sadness you enjoy listening to. A fucking 'b' side too! _No-one will hear this. It will go ignored._
At the time I didn't think of retrospectives or compilations featuring long-forgotten 'b' sides etc. He was a genius and I miss him already.

Here I am in 2021 falling in Love with Talk Talk all over again! In 1982 I heard Have You Heard The News on the radio and the haunting quality of that song and already knowing song Talk Talk, I bought The Party's Over. There was a great deal of synthesizer typical of the early 80s but grounded with incredible mood music (too early to call it emo) that made them one of my favs from the 80s. Others were Psych Furs and Tears for Fears.
Loved Candy...When next album came out I was so hooked on Living in Another World and Life's What You Make It that I never ventured further. Now, just yesterday 01/17/21) I decided to delve into the internet aspect of Talk Talk and...well I'm still here!
I have yet to hear Renee or Eden.. but as of right now:
    1) Tomorrow Started
    2)live Does Caroline Know?
    3)Candy
    4)Such a Shame
    5)Life's What You Make It
    6) Living in Another World (esp harmonica)
    7)The Party's Over
    8)Have You Heard the News
    9)It's My Life
    10)My Foolish Friend
Thank you for this great video and get back to me to organize an effort for posthumous rock and roll Hall of Fame.

Yeah he was from another world. I tried to explain to my grandson what it was like to listen to a persons music for 35 years the relationship that develops between them and the listener. I finally gave up trying to explain it all and ended up telling him that he will just have to wait 35 years to understand.
