  • MUNCHIES host and sommelier Billy Wagner heads down to the Moselle Valley to give us an insight into the beautiful world of riesling wines, meeting top-class vintners and a handful of colorful characters along the way.
    In order to protect the riesling grape, coordinated hunts take place regularly in the region along the Moselle. In this episode, Billy takes part in one of these traditional hunts and learns what it truly means to be a hunter.

    Great episode. Nice that people get to see hunting and butchering. Good to see people upholding traditions and culture as well as sharing.

    As a vegetarian i find hunting way more acceptable than mass produced meat.
    Man, i would start eating meat again if all meat was gathered like this.

    • @WeiselFalso
      @WeiselFalso 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if it was regulated. But then meat prices would go way up, making it a commodity, a premium commodity, like the organic crap they sell at stores.

    Splendid. I actually read a bit about the hunting traditions shown here, with the "drive" and hunters positioned around the area to shoot any animals ahead of the drivers. Very interesting to see it in actual practice.

    What's the story behind the horn tooting I wonder

    • @ironbooze2937
      @ironbooze2937 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      way back in the day the Jagdhorn (hunting horn) it has been used as a signal horn, as they, at times, had much bigger hunts Now it's more a traditional thing, I guess. It's also used in classic music.

    K I get hunting the deer, boars, hares and rabbits to protect the vines, but why the foxes?!

    • @SJA992
      @SJA992 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +allweatherjacket foxes are somewhat omnivores and will eat berries and i assume grapes when they come in to season, but it does seem like a waste to kill the foxes im sure they dont have a massive impact on the grapes

      +allweatherjacket Foxes are pest animals in many places and generally speaking scanvenger predators like foxes taste horrible, they may shoot them because there are too many and they kill the other animals and birds etc.

    • @shuffler179
      @shuffler179 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Stu Edwards It's not only about the wine. Especially deers and rabbits would overpopulate because there are no natural emenies-except foxes. Deers are not only eating the wine, but also young trees which are planted for reafforestation

  • @mbpaintballa
    @mbpaintballa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i was annoyed when he said that the host couldnt shoot.... the lack of a firearms license should hold you back, the lack of a tag for the animal is the only factor that should keep you from shooting..... the firearms owner is right there.

    • @EvanHT
      @EvanHT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +joeyynguyenn how do you expect me to get my food without hunting? keep in mind i live 150km away from nearest store. Hunting is ethical and the meat is good for you with no toxins. Hunting connects you to your food. It is hunters that protect this land while you sit there and do nothing. We are the ones with the most to lose so we are the ones who put money and time into saving it.

      +Evan Hindle Sit there and do nothing? ive been outside everyday CONNECTING with my garden of 74 different types of fruits and vegetables this season alone and when winter comes I have more than enough in storage, or i could be tending to my farm animals of whom I treat only with respect! Which is also why my milk and dairy products have brought me great fame and fortune but besides the fact what in the shitbrains do you mean by Hunt to protect? what could be out there that is so scary you have to protect yourself from! you sicken me

    • @EvanHT
      @EvanHT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      uhhh so you farm but hate hunting...lol youre a fucking joke. Hunting is more humane than farming...

    • @EvanHT

      and hunters protect the land with their money and volunteer hours because it is us who miss out if it is destroyed. We successfully have brought back dozens of species, saved millions of acres as national parks. Yes it was hunters who created the national parks system!
      Where should i get my meat from then big boy
      ??? tell me how.
