Dan Fogelberg Live in Concert - Set 1

  • My understanding of this show is it is in the early 1980’s when Dan was at the peak of his career (most of the songs are off of Phoenix and The Innocent Age), one of the major networks filmed one of his concerts with the intention of airing it in the near future. Unfortunately, half way through the show Dan’s voice cracked and he lost his falsetto. Consequently, it was never aired. Somehow someone got a copy of the recording and that led to me being able to buy a VHS tape of it off of eBay back in the late 1990’s. When I discarded my VHS collection I digitized the tape and put it on my computer and then burned it to a DVD. There are many great songs not usually heard in other shows like Face The Fire, Tell Me To My Face, a solo acoustic guitar instrumental of Eleanor Rigby (a fill in for one of the songs he needed his falsetto for), and many, many more.
Because of the source and age it isn’t of the best quality of course but still very watchable. I divided it into two sets due to the upload time for TH-cam. I’ll put the link to the second set in the comments.

In the mid-70's I was stationed in the Sinai desert as part of a UN Peacekeeping mission just after the end of the Yom Kippur War. It was hot, nasty work - we had a sign in our command post that said, "Last man alive is to call New York and tell them 'They're at it again'!" Patrols and sandstorms, lots of mines in the ground, and nothing but desert and sky, and so hot that the tops of the thermometers we had would blow off ... . I had a cassette player with me, and a friend sent me some tapes half-way through my tour, including "The Innocent Age". I didn't know Dan's music, but the sheer beauty of his voice and the intelligence and love in his lyrics helped me stay sane in that place. Today I'm 81 years old and the wars of the middle East are still raging but tonight I listened to that voice from the past and stared up at those same old stars above another desert - this one in Arizona - and for a few minutes the empty night was again filled with love and peace. When I came inside to close down my laptop, there on the screen was the phrase that I have kept there for over twenty years: "Death is there to keep us honest, and constantly remind us we are free". Goodnight, Dan, and thanks you, again.

I wish he truly could be like a human Phoenix and rise from the flames ! We will never know what new heights Dan would have reached if he was still with us ? It's past due this man's talents are properly acknowledge d by the music industry ! Utterly criminal he's so overlooked .

Listening to DF's live version of "The Reach" in the early '80s reminds me of just how mesmerizing his musicianship, singing voice, and lyrics were "once upon a time." True of many of his songs, of course, but this one was not as well known as his big hits from the Innocent Age and his other albums. Just stunning!

  • @BuckBarker

I attended the concert at Market Square Arena in 1981. One of my friends played lead for him on that tour. (Barry “Byrd” Burton , he got the job because after Mr. Fogelberg had auditioned many players , he said Byrd could mimic him the best!) I went to the sound check the day before. I was an avid autograph collector. I asked Byrd if he 0:07 thought Mr. Fogelberg would mind if I came up on the stage and got an autograph. Byrd said , “I don’t know he’s kinda funny.” I thought all he can do is say no. I remember walking out there on the giant stage where he was seated at a black grand piano. He looked up and I asked,”Mr. Fogelberg would you be so kind to give me an autograph?” He replied, “Sure, no problem!” I still have the autograph. I had a custom leather shop back then and made the guitar strap Byrd wore with his ‘59 LesPaul . Both Mr. Fogelberg and Byrd have long since passed. But, their music will live forever. May they rest in peace.

If you had any idea how much you're missed after all these years, Dan. Many in the world may not know it, but the world's light was greatly diminished with your passing. Tons of men out there who're only posers regarding what true masculinity, what being a complete man really is. Heck, you can even see it painted all over that crowd on the 1/6 insurrection. Needing a gun to prove your point is being no man at all. As is following the crowd just to fit in. Dan proved his points, bared his soul, with the most extraordinary music ever written by a passionate, masculine, thoroughly heterosexual man. Think about that while you're sitting in that favorite chair of yours while eating pork rinds and switching the channel from the game to a John Wayne movie.

Thank you for sharing this!! I have huge regrets about not seeing him in concert so this is really wonderful!! Do you know where this concert was? He says “Texas” but I’m thinking he was joking?
    Thank you!❤❤❤
