  • Saotome sensei describes "biofeedback" as an important concept for understanding the higher aspects of aikido. This video presents two principles and a few exercises to help explore this idea of biofeedback: opposition reflex and overcorrection reflex.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but it seems like a good way to visualize this is as if a body in a state of overcorrection is held together with rubber bands in a constant state of tension. "Bouncing", or tensing and de-tensing the rubber bands causes additional unintentional movement which can be manipulated.

Oh man, I don't want to seem to be overly criticising.
What you show is definitely true and worthwhile to explore. One can provoke any kind of muscle reflex or balance reflex when you're fast enough. And one can train for years to exploit this. And one can get really good at it. BUT...
This demonstration is totally static. The attacker is trying to hold the middle while not attacking the defender's middle.
If you meet someone who is going straight for your throat, right down the middle, with intent, he will release the force of the arm and relax, follow up with an elbow.
If you try to move the elbow out of the way, the shoulder will follow, and then the head and teeth! Still aimed at your throat.
Be aware that some martial arts (including Aikido I believe) try to keep the center line.
As a point of note, I am not talking about any sort of dynamic disruption of the attacker's balance (kuzushi). While the attacker AND the defender may have a very good body posture, the attack may come straight through the middle. And then the game becomes a very fluid play of chess. Good luck trying to provoke an overcorrection reflex.

The music obscures the verbal gems of nage when talking...not the narrator...great principle

What he call biofeedback is just aiki. In Daito ryu its called aiki no jutsu. It was Ueshiba who mystify the whole aiki technique. I think that is one reason why Yukiyoshi Sagawa didnt liked him much.He was the total opposite respective the aiki issue. I also cant understand why Uehiba didnt teached aiki directly. Today's Aikido in most cases is just a cooperative dance! The true aiki is missing in Aikido, what a shame.

Why do you make an "instructive" video if you are going to obscure the explanations with music?

Didn't need that guitar background. It's irritating and an ear sore.

It's always a bit of a struggle to find the balance for a nice quiet background, trying something innovative, and still fill the quiet space on longer videos. But thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated!
