    The old man weathered resilent, calculated, humble and with unrelentless inner strength and prowess. His intuition won him the prize that had eluded him for years because he never gave up. A great life lesson slow and steady wins. The boy was most kind and gracious he knew the Old Man was his greatest teacher. True fishermen the strongest of all men.

  • @scottmillaway8226
    @scottmillaway8226 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    The Old Man was far from being beat. His fellow fishermen saw the size of the fish. He was everything the boy knew he was. He would never have to prove his self again.

      Maybe I am wrong, but I think a teenager might not have that kind of life experience which would make him fully appreciate this novel. I had to read it as a teen because of school and I remember not understanding at that time why this novel was considered so great. More than twentyfive years later, with more experience in my baggage, I get it now.

    Charleston Heston had a security clearance as high as the US president. He narrated the training films for the armed forces, and knew all the classified information about aircraft, munitions, etc. His voice is a national treasure.

    I have been in pain for the past few days. The gym is sometimes unkind to my old back. 😊was a real pleasure to lie here on the couch in the late of the night listening to Heston’s voice narrating this great old story. I like his voice. His politics, not so much.

  • @ilokivi

    First introduction to Hemingway’s writing style was his short story Indian Camp, about a Native American woman in labour but experiencing difficulties with giving birth. His often laconic, factual descriptions have something of the documentary about them, which says less but allows much room for interpretation of the unwritten and implied. Allied to Heston’s wonderful reading, this is a spellbinding story of an old fisherman’s struggle to survive using his craft and wits to the utmost.

    This is my favorite version of this reading. Hemingway was never greater than when he wrote this. So poignant it aches in my fingertips and the soles of my feet. Like slipping or falling from a height, unexpectedly. I hope to be able to look without flinching one day. To acknowledge the world in such a bright light of reality, with empathy but, not pity. I may be an old woman, then.

    I had a creative writing course in college. One of the tools for improving your writing skills by reading The Classics. I read this Hemmingway classic, Of mice and men etc. And my writing did improve. It's not that you copy a single aspect of what I'd read. Why it works is beyond me. Believe it or not Tarzan of The Apes was an excellent read. Even though I knew the story well the writing style was addictive. It flowed like prose, rhythmic and smoothe.

    I own the audible version which uses Donald Sutherland as the narrator. I didn’t know Heston did a version too. His voice resonates better for me. Good job using just enough of an accent and perfect level of drama. He doesn’t overact.

    Most heroism is done in secret. Best way I suppose, lest pride dull its shine.
