I added a six-inch extension on my truck and an Eaton shift knob, that I really like. I also added an extra switch for the exhaust brake using the Easy Jake which is designed to work with the Eaton knob.
I'm running an Ohio diesel extended shifter in my truck and I put a piece of rubber between the shifter and the tower where they bolt together and you can barely hear the trans anymore. Highly recommend
Can’t believe I didn’t think of a extension on my nv5600 I have the same problem you had. Swapped the 6 speed into my 98 12v with a dual disc and towing down two tracks and Maneuvering is a bear. Thanks Sam keep up the good work!
Fighting your transmission just makes life harder than it needs to be, particularly when you know the box pre dual clutch shifted sweetly, but doesn't now. It sounds like the clutch throw is insufficient for the dual clutch setup. Slave and master cylinders are cheap and quick to change, I would try initially 1/8 inch smaller cylinder ( smaller cylinder gives more throw for same volume / movement) see how much difference, this makes, with the issue you are having it may require more change than this, but , this will pretty much guarantee to significantly improve the issue. ( slave plus master = 2 x 1/8" change is just over half of 1 x 1/4" change) I have struck this issue on stock setup where this was the easiest fix when the dealer or other agents couldn't solve the problem, other work around such as playing with "push rod " length can also help, good luck Edit, had a look online, these have an adjustable pushrod, this may be all you need to play with if you haven't already Good luck
I almost forgot how much harder mine shifted when I dropped in the ValAir dual organic clutch for towing. Went from a single Solid fly wheel to the Dual. - I remember getting fed up with smelling oil inside the truck and found out the boot was torn and it was leaking from the top. So I fixed that and took out half of the fluid. I think it was stock ATF junk instead of mobile 1. And dropped in 2 quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer, 1 quart of Lucas transmission fix, (for the detergents, and just because) 1/4 a bottle of MMO And like 4 OZ of NoMoFriction (If I remember correctly) and it’s been shifting like a dream. If it’s below 20F it takes a while to warm up because of the Lucas I think. But after 10 minutes of driving it’s a lot better than what it was before in that temp. - It was a temporary fix because I had a Jobsite to go to the next morning and I was out there till midnight. That was 75k miles ago.
I've had a G-56 since '06. I have the SBC OKHD. it does shift slick especially with Amsoil MTG. It quite a bit easier to shift than with Delvac 50. Near zero metal on the drain plug with 30K. I'm glad I don't need the dual disk.
I have a 09 3500 with a g56 and pull a loaded equipment trailer every day. I had to put a Valair organic dual disc in at 32k because the factory pressure plate was giving out. I believe the hard shifting is because of the switch to the Mobil 50 weight from the factory ATF that the trucks came with. I initially switched to the Mobil 50 weight also and add one to two extra quarts as Valair recommends to help reduce the harmonic noise that happens when you switch to the dual disc and solid flywheel from the factory clutch and dual mass flywheel. I recently switched to chevron synthetic 50 as it’s easier to get. Seems to work fine so far. Also put a TDS pto cover on that come with a higher fill hole and now can check the oil without taking a bath. The cover is awesome. Thanks for the video on the shifter extension I definitely will be ordering one.
I had that pto cover. Running dual fast coolers on it now. Two quarts extra in it now. I’m running what valair recommended. Truck had factory oil in trans when I swapped to dual Disk the 50w seems the best I’ve tried so far. And I’ve tried a lot lol
It’s a truck it’s supposed to have a stick and that little extension I just love have two one on tranny and one on my manual 4x4 shifter and it’s great. And I hauled cars for GM since I was 23 yrs old and did that till I retired and I guess I was to old to let all the air out of my seat and shifter over my head. I drove all them yrs with no accidents and I lost how many millions of miles I drove with out no accidents. I know my first first award I got was 2 million miles I got . We put a rubber hose over stick shift from top to bottom to take the rattle out. And do not rest your hand on shifter because it will wear out the nylon covers on your forks . !!
Uinta diesel performance shift knob, 3 inch extension welded on to the stock shifter and a B&M short shifter. The knob is solid stainless steel, the weight helps it slide right in. I run this combo and will never go back
Your up hill "battle" reminded me of sailing. I had a Lancer 25 which is no speed demon but if there's at least 2 sailboats out on a lake, eventually they will be neck and neck trying each other out. Glad you got your issue fixed, and you didn't have to resort to one of those super trucker shifters! When I drove service vans it was a constant battle chasing down rattles and squeaks...lots of bungees!
The best I have found for to make my cast iron 6 speed manual is 2 quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer full sun and top it off with Amsoil sever gear and it is quieter easier to shift and I have tried a lot of stuff and I run Amsoil sever gear in my transfer case and I did this because auto trans fluid is full of friction modifiers for the clutch plates to hold better and I’ve run this since my warranty ran out and I bought Dodge 3500 5.9 4x4 so try it you will like it .
Thank you for making a video about it. I just ordered mine from Amazon and I also have been wondering how to make my 06 3500 shift better, last year I installed a dual disc.
I too have tried that taller Ohio diesel stainless shifter and it’s crazy loud, I tried cutting up a bike tube and putting it between the mounting points. Tightened it down and tested it and it hardly made a difference. It was the same scenario for me, one day and it was back out and went back to stock. I’m gunna have to order me one of them little cheap extensions you got and try that out. I love my g56 and Valair clutch though.
And I hate not having lock out hubs because it’s nice to have the low gear to back up. My new 92 had locking hubs and when I got my 05 and no hubs they told me they different have them any more and that sucked .
Getcha one a them there sparkley red shifter handles @ the chrome shop in the truck stop, en a extension so ya can see the handle in the mirror. LOL, You damn Dodge guys kill me!
Who'da thunk it.............9 bucks, problem adjourned lol. Other than taking the damn console out everytime, for 150 bucks I would've been bolting straps of rubber between the shifter and trans tower gear slapper stub.........a lot of tries! The first drive with V-belt you said "reminds me of that Ford you used to have"..........all I could hear in my head was the 'schlick schlick' of a 4 speed in 1970's Ford pickup! Hauled a lotsa cows and lotsa hay in those old fords
Any thoughts on an Eaton Fuller swap? Thinking of swapping the very tired NV4500 in my '03 with a 6 speed. You're always mentioning how much you like the G56 and now I'm considering it for the ease versus the long/custom install of the Eaton. Not sure what to do! P.S. I don't haul for a living and the most I haul regularly is around 10k. My only real consideration for the Eaton is the cool/overkill factor lol
You running a Southbend dual disk? I have run them and the valair dual disk in the same truck as you and hands down the valair is a better shifting clutch all the way around.
@@carbpumper I have two trucks with the dual disk from south bend. I’ll never buy from them again. Made both trucks shift terrible. Made a video putting the Valair in and instantly my truck shifted great. Tons of ppl completed their south bend did the same thing.
I do know you can break your shifter. If you are like I was and not smart enough to make the habit of going to 3rd. or 4th. gear first to align the synchronizers.
I've tried a few different trans.lubes.some help, but only for a few hundred miles...difficult to put in to 1st or 2nd from a stop..what's your findings???not enough clutch disengagement???
For $150 there's no reason why that company couldn't have machined a groove in the bottom of that shifter and insert a rubber o-ring just like the stock shifter.
Not sure if you would have any interest in this to make your truck have a little better fuel economy but banks power has diff covers for the rear axle for your dodge truck that was in this video that you use to haul your diamond c goosneck. Would putting a thin piece of rubber. Between the shifter and the shift tower. Help with the noise.
You can take a chunk of rubber and throw it in between the shift tower and the handle itself and it helps quite a bit
And I hate not having lock out hubs because it’s nice to have the low gear to back up. My new 92 had locking hubs and when I got my 05 and no hubs they told me they different have them any more and that sucked .

I'm a dodge guy but mine doesn't have them big giant tow mirrors. Just the little mickey mouse mirrors
I did a Hurst aluminum pistol grip shift nob. Same effect as your extension and I like how it feels

That’s great glad the $9 extension worked out. I miss the manual trans tho.
i assume the link is to the NV 56 thread pitch / or is it the same for the NV4500 ? Thanks Sam for all the help you give the Cummins
You need to put lock tite on it or will come lose so I put some blue on mine and I’ve good to go .

Now you understand why Mopar went to the PISTOL GRIP shifter! 😂
My dad has done his shifting fork twice in his 08 with a dual disk.
Just put a rubber hose that fits snug. That’s what all the old truckers did and still do .
Put rubber in between it where it bolts up at.
Core makes a good shifter
keep the great work man
G56 for the win!😎
Great video Sam 🇺🇲
You need to make it comfortable for your needs.
Super trucker Sam New CB handle. 10-4
I like the amsoil products in all my shitters.
You gotta have a manual in a dodge if you want a trans to last im a manual guy to though Ford guy as well but i like dodge just not the new stuff
Not the 90s anymore. The 6 speed auto Aisin is a tough long lastin trans
Looks like highway 20 between Yuba and Grass Valley.
I might have to get the extender 👍
Late to the video but try rapping the shifter with some sound deadening material might work
Stack three of them together and get it
Did that thing Rattle the heck out of you hand.. more than stock one.
That shifter was complete trash. Terrible vibration

Yeah I wish I bought valair
Tried 1 of them myself. Liked the looks and shifting. But couldn’t pay me to run that rattle trap.
If you just bump into a higher gear, the synchro will slow the input shaft and easy go into first or reverse
That’s what did forever. Not awesome for a low mile trans. I put a good quality clutch in it and it goes into any gear easily

Sam,
Would you ever purchase a G56 from Superstick transmission? I just recently had one built and will be hauling heavy with it.
I’m hoping it works for you, I would like to get one down the road
Superstick has a full billet g56 that is amazing ….. if ur pushing power

What if you put some rubber between the parts that bolt together on the $150 one
In my experience with Hurst shifters, that does help a lot.
Wonder if you could put rubber between the mounting of the new handle?
Nice one 👍🏻
What’s the plug in tuner you have I have a manual G56 I need more power

@@williamking9494 you can on your PTO cover but there's no point
It’s the hollow part in the OE shift knob that’s amplifying the transmission noise!
I wonder how it would shift if you did a double extension on it 🤔🤔🤔
I do know you can break your shifter. If you are like I was and not smart enough to make the habit of going to 3rd. or 4th. gear first to align the synchronizers.
Would a rubber piece placed between the shifter/trans bolt together possibly dampen the noise?
