- It's off-season at Disneyland... or is it? I visited Disneyland on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024 to check out the crowd levels. The Christmas season ended 9 days ago, food festivals don't start for another week. There's nothing going on.
You'd think, like me, that the park would be empty. But you'd be as wrong as I was. Join me as we walk around Disneyland checking out ride wait times and crowd levels throughout the park.

We're headed down there January 27th and 28th. Our last visit (first time going!) was Spring Break last year so I guess we'll be prepared!
Oh yes! Any day is better than Spring Break.
I don’t get anxiety, but last year during Spring Break, I had to periodically find a quiet bench out of the way of crowds to recharge a bit.

Pirates and Jungle Cruise were open by the time I got home, but that’s an 90 minute drive so hard to say exactly when they reopened. But they were at least closed the hour I was filming. Which is a sad reality sometimes.
Other times it can work to your benefit.
Mickey and Minnie’s was closed for about an hour last time we were there on the 7th, and my buddy and his girlfriend were right next to it when it reopened and he got on with no wait.
I think with Splash and the Mansion down, and Pirates getting a Lightning Lane (or just being down, as you saw it), this will be an entire year of super long lines.

So what I noticed the last time I visited
Now that the Holidays are done there are almost NO live shows and no fireworks/WOC, heck they aren't even doing the cure little retelling of Tangled. So the rides are the only thing soaking up people, Splash and Small World are down. Rides break down daily so that not only pushes people to other rides but later when it reopens the rides have a longer line because LL people have been waiting to ride it. So those are my thoughts on why it's so bad now during the off season
Every single one of these is spot on.
We were in the park on Tuesday December 12 and it was WAYYYY less crowded than this. So weird! Like you said, I also would have thought that it would be much more crowded during Christmas season than in mid-January. Think maybe the best plan is to simply try to go when most of the passholders are blocked out (weekends, holidays, etc?)
Mid-December is usually one of our go-to times to visit. Especially for Christmas.
@@SoCalDisneyDadIt’s crowded because kids get in for 50 bucks during this time. I saw Disney tickets on Groupon. The promotion ends the beginning of March.
We are going for our first trip to Disneyland/DCA for 3 days during the week of 2/8-2/12. We are so excited and your videos have definitely been a huge help in planning out trip! We have Hopper passes but thought because we we're going in the off season, we were gonna skip genie plus. Given the circumstances in this video, do you think it would be worth it to get genie plus ?
If you have a day like this, Genie+ will be most useful.
You can do one of a few things. You can wait and see how busy it is that day, rope drop is always more manageable so that you won’t start feeling the need until around 11 AM, but by then some of the best rides will be 5-6 hours out, so you may feel like you missed out if you wait.
You can buy it the first day (what we do when we go to WDW) and do everything you can to the fullest on Day 1 and then use the other two days to just do things you missed or your favorites again but at a more casual pace.
Or you can NOT get it Day 1, see how it goes, and buy it on Days 2 and/or 3 if you deem it necessary.
@@SoCalDisneyDad Great ideas thanks so much! We're coming from Rhode Island so we are definitely going to be ripe dropping! I have a plan in place to optimize that time as well, so hopefully we will get to do it all!
My family is coming then too so this applies to us as well. It will be me and my husband’s first time!
We were there last week. Monday was an expected crowd amount. Tuesday we were in DCA and it was heavy but not unmanageable. Wednesday we started in Galaxy’s Edge and when we emerged back into Disneyland it was like June crowds. (At least, June 20 years ago 😂) The queues for the rest of our time were filled up like your video but we hacked our time and managed to be in front of the crowds as we went through the park. Winnie the Pooh was always a 5 minute wait for us, but the day we left it started to be a long wait like your video. I feel like we went to the park at just the right time for crowd congestion. But it was also crazy for the time of year.
I will say Rise of the Resistance, the way they designed the queue, half the wait time is being in a different part of the ride. If that ride is listed even at 50-60, I’ll still get in line bc it goes fast and the line is essentially part of the ride. I’d say they designed that queue fantastically!
Adding that I still don’t get the intense wait times for Peter Pan 😂
Going next week Monday-Wednesday so really hoping it dies down a bit! And we’re going to rope drop so hope that helps too!
Yes! Rope drop is always a good time for rides. I make these videos in the afternoon to give a “worst case scenario” situation. But mornings and evenings will be better.
My guess is you hit Rise just as it had opened from a temporary closure. The rare times I've seen that type of queue on a busy day is that scenario.
That’s possible. I hadn’t been really paying attention to Rise up until that point. It’s 85 minutes as I type this.
Im going on the 25th. Im really excited, but i hope i can get on a ton of rides. Its my birthday that day, so really hoping!
Are you getting Genie+? That’s the best way to cram in as many rides as possible in a single day.

Wow! Looks like June might be better than off season??
We were there on January 9th: similar waiting times: was so disappointed: had to stay till 10pm to only do a few rides total. There were so many rides I wanted to do that I couldn't. The place was super full and surprisingly the crowd was rude: bumping each other out of the way: could have been foreigners. I'm a foreigner myself but I'm well behaved.😅
Sorry about the crowd and rude guests. I hope you were able to at least have some fun all the same.

We just missed you! My wife and I went to Disneyland and California Adventure on the 17th and 18th. While the lines weren’t that bad, they were pretty close at times which was strange, but we genie plus’d most things which worked out very well.
Also, we had a potential video idea (although it would prob be torture). More of a challenge video. The idea would be to spend the entire day on one attraction. When you exit, you get right back on from open till close. You would take breaks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or whenever the attraction closes. But I don’t really think it’s a great idea because in my mind that would be torture 😅

There is no such thing as an “off-season” anymore. People are willing to take off work and school to save money while ticket prices are lower. It is cheaper to buy 3 single day tickets than a 3 day pass around this time.
Yeah, that’s one of my money saving hacks. Three Tier 0 day tickets are cheaper than a 3 day ticket. And the only benefit of a multi day ticket is park hopper. So if you aren’t planning on hopping, then it’s cheaper to buy separate tickets.
wow those crowds are crazy! 😮curious if you have ever noticed a long line for the silhouette studio at rope drop time? that’s number 1 on my wife’s priority for when we go in 2 weeks so just trying to plan ahead!

@@mi9nguyen Provost Park Pass just did a video on it and I believe you have to get there early or you may not get one. They're only open for a short time so they choose a certain allotment of people each day and that's all.
That is insane. It's one of the busiest I have seen it. Through your vlog. That's when you only have that one day. It's a bummer. But Genie + helps. I had to.
Another channel stated magic keys aren't restricted anymore so they're ALL back in the parks again? The crowds are worse than when we were there over the holidays! 😲

AND, another viewer just pointed out the $50 kids tickets have started, and that’s a huge discount.
@@SoCalDisneyDad True, Disney was smart selling those tickets to boost attendance during the regularly slower times.
$50 kid ticket sale probably adds to the crowds. You can use them Jan 7-March 10, I think.
Oh no! 😭 Were going there in a few days and we we're hoping for smaller crowds. It will be my kids first time and i havent been in almost 10 years. This makes me so nervous and sad. 😬
The wait times right now are decent, all things considered (Rise is temporarily broken as I type, and Haunted Mansion is closed for a few months).
It seems to have calmed down quite a bit since this video.

Its also Tuesday after MLK. Some people will extend their trip to the tuesday.
I did mention that as a possibility. Though the park was still pretty crowded today as well. Not quite as bad, but also not what I’d typically expect.
The $50 kids tickets are now active, so that’s a contributing factor to higher crowds, too.
I was there the same time as you and it felt like the posted wait times on the app were all over the place. On MLK day, Rise of the Resistance showed a 60 min wait at 9pm but we were able to walk right on. Autopia showed a 10 min wait but our actual time in line was closer to 30 min.
Its so weird that the posted times and people in the lines didn't match up half the time!
It was a very strange day.
Lines longer than usual with average wait times.
Way above average wait times with average or lower than average lines.
It just wasn’t making any sense to me.
And this is like the 5th or 6th of these types of videos I’ve done.
@@SoCalDisneyDad I'm sure the ride closures affected the lines for the other rides as well. Winnie the Pooh wouldn't have been half as busy if Pirates and Jungle Cruise were running.

Disney World is in a similar situation with crowds.
What's more accurate? The wait times in the app or on the signage?
We were there 1/16 and had some weird waits for a Tuesday in January!
There is no slow time anymore. Disney controls the crowds now with reservation system .i would go on Sunday and it was less busy than during the week . Always waits everytime of the year .

I’ll be back in Disney and California adventure in May with a college friend. I think Disney will be less crowded in May cause tourism doesn’t happen until June July and August. We should certainly be fine
May is always a good time to go. It's our usual time to travel to WDW for much the same reason. After Memorial Day it gets a lot busier.
I went last summer at the beginning of August, and there was one day when winnie the pooh AND the little mirmaid were both at 40 minute waits
That’s insane. Those rides should never be more than 25 on the busiest of days.
We went January 17 last year and it was SO quiet. We never waited longer than 30 minutes except for two rides. I’m pretty sure the $50 kids tickets are to blame for this years crowds 😂

That’s a good chunk of time. Crowds or not, I’m sure you’ll be able to get everything done you want to at a nice pace without the rush and fretting.

Show up at rope drop, you'll be able to knock out 3 before 9 AM. You'll probably get another 2-3 before 10 AM. And that's when the crowds will start appearing.
You could consider Genie+, I know it's an extra expense, but it really does help. A lot. And just makes for such a more pleasant experience because you aren't stressing that the line isn't moving, etc.

Was there last week, 01/08-01/11, on a 3-day park hopper. Not as crowded as when me and the fam would go around the 2nd week of November. I would say it was still semi-crowded 😂. Coming from Hawaii and never being use to weather anything below 65*, it was pretty cold 😆
You’re right at home with us SoCal residents. 😂 We bundle up in 50s and 60s and act like the Ice Age is upon us. 🤣
We were at DCA on Monday and after 11:30am or so it was packed. I'm guessing some people are just taking advantage of the Monday MLK holiday and staying off school/work an extra day.
A lot of people would still have been there from the Half Marathon weekend.
Disney is so brilliant with pricing and magic keys.

I did see Guardians at 100 minutes a few hours ago. Actually it’s still 95 right now. Spider-Man is 80 minutes. Disneyland doesn’t look too terrible right this very minute, but was busier earlier.
It’s dinner time now so probably a lot of people eating.
how is it second week of april? We will have DAS and genie + hopefully it helps. My 5yr old is autistic and is hit or miss with lines lol
It’s the tail end of Spring Break, it’ll be better than the week before Easter for sure. Not quite as good as the end of April, but still better than the bulk of Spring Break.

Yes! That is the most likely cause for the craziness.
Hello!! I'm new here and I'm beyooooond amazed with your channel! Very helpfull! So, i'm visiting Disneyland next February 5th and 6th...any advice about weather? should we wear sweaters and jackets?
Our weather is really rather unpredictable and subjective. I’ve had really cold times and mild times. This year is surprisingly warm right now.
Still need a jacket, at least for us SoCal residents who aren’t used to the cold. But I usually shed the jacket around 10-11 AM as it starts getting warmer.
I’ve seen December be 45 degrees as a high, and December is usually warmer than January and February. But that didn’t happen this year.
February typically is our coldest month. So who knows, the temps may still drop.
January and February can also be rainy, as it’s supposed to rain this weekend. And that’s a contributing factor in colder weather.
But it’ll never drop below freezing. We never get ice or snow. Hope that’s helpful!
This is a little concerning, do you think that they increased the number of reservations available? Fresh Baked was there on Martin Luther King Day and said it was really crowded and he was saying it was a lot of Enchant Keys because the Toy Story parking lot was using all 4 lots where they usually only use 2 and he said that's the parking where Enchant Keys get 50 percent off so he figured it was a lot of Enchant Keys in the park that day.
The bottom two passes do get 25% off at Toy Story, yes.
I’ve only parked there once, so I have no idea how they usually operate. Dave is a good guy, so I’d trust his opinion/reasoning.
A whole slew of new people just got passes last week and they were probably eager to use them.
runDisney races just ended Sunday. Some may have stayed longer due to flight cancellations.
We knew about the run, we actually cancelled our Saturday reservations to avoid the crowds. But I didn’t think about flight cancellations.
It’s really hard to remember the whole US is under winter storm warning when it’s 50-60 degrees here.

Is it true that Super Bowl sunday is one of the less busy days of the year at Disneyland?
I’ve never been, but that tracks.
I think Easter is pretty empty too.
The days where people traditionally go out to eat with family (Mother’s Day being another) or get together with friends (like Super Bowl) do tend to have fewer locals.

That's a solid guess. One I had forgot about at the time. Fantasyland was definitely the most hectic of all the lands.
Nothing worse then spending an arm and a leg to go to disney and ur overwhelmed w the huge crowds and u look at the app and every queue is 80+ mins or things are closed

I’m at Disneyland yesterday through Friday from New Jersey and I’m surprised how crowded it is - I specially picked cause I thought it was slow/ first few hours not bad but as day progresses-

There has been NO OFF SEASON in any DISNEY PARKS POST PANDEMIC.
Is this possibly bc of the $50 tickets for children?? Cheaper tickets more crowds?
That is probably a very good guess. Those tickets became active on January 8th. So that’s definitely a contributing factor.
Well they also just sold out magic keys again in a day. Maybe that added to the crowd?
Possible a lot of new Magic Key holders very eager to get in the park.

End of April should be okay. Just after all the crazy Spring Break crowds and it’s getting closer to school final projects and exams and such for those schools that get out early like my kids in Mid-May. Which just means kids are less likely to miss school.
Just curious to get your take on this….are there schools that are off in mid-Jan? What’s feeding the crowds like this on weekdays?
I doubt any schools were off, it just means parents are pulling their kids. There's a couple of contributing factors, the first being $50 kids tickets from Jan to March. That's a huge discount and parents are taking advantage. Secondly, it WAS the day after MLKJ day, so it's possible folks took a 4-day weekend instead of a 3-day.
Add in all the new magic key holders that just got their passes for the first time on January 10th, plus a RunDisney event the weekend before with flights cancelled due to Winter storms and you have the "perfect storm" of "this should have been an empty day, but I guess it's not"

Would you say the times on the app are pretty close to the actual wait times. It seems some are exaggerated high and end up being a lot less, but then others are reversed. Going next Tuesday so I expect it to be the same. No such thing as off season anymore
Generally, I trust what the app says. In our experience, the app is usually mostly spot on or UNDER. And why I say under is because people will race to a low wait attraction and you may find it’s gotten busier, but the app just hasn’t caught up yet.
I’m going to be there in February… praying to god these crowds lower. So silly of Disney to close Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain and Grizzly River Rapids all at the same time.
Haunted Mansion doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Considering the ride is functioning just fine as it is. The upgrades are nice, but they could have waited until Tiana’s opens.
I honestly thought they’d keep it open during the queue refurb. And just work around it.
@@SoCalDisneyDad I think Disney is trying to use Haunted Mansion as a way to combat what universal studios is doing in regards to the new Fast and Furious Rollercoaster in Hollywood and the whole new park in Florida, but it’s not working. The best Disney can hope for is a recovery in public perception. Their income probably isn’t impacted yet, but only because they keep adding nonsense charges that weren’t their before. Disney needs to change something, ASAP. And it isn’t just refacing/remodeling old rides and lines. I can’t remember the last time I went to Disney with every ride operational.
@@davidarrington4144 Not accounting for temporary closures during the day, which aren’t always technical (someone could have dropped a hat or phone on the track) December, just last month, had no scheduled refurbs in either park all month long with the EXCEPTION of Astro Orbitor.
That’s as close to no rides closed as I’ve seen in the last year.
But yeah, Epic Universe is going to be big.
USO has 3 gates, if you include the water park, soon to be 4.
Of course USH is a sad sad park compared to either USO or Disneyland. Even with a new coaster coming. It’s like a one and done sort of place.
I go about 3 times a year to cover what I can of the park, but it’s just not worth it to try to go more often than that.
Going to be there the 24th through the 26th. Thoughts?
First couple of days of Lunar New Year. Expect DCA to be busy. But crossing my fingers Disneyland isn’t quite as bad as this and it chills out a bit in the days to come.

This is the way it was last February when we went. I commented on that in one of your videos and you disagreed with me
My general experience with this time of year is that's a solid time to visit. Last year, I don't remember crazy crowds until March 13th. But it could have just been the dates we went. I think we were only going once every 2-3 weeks last year, so not as frequent to have a better read on crowds like this.
I've been visiting once a week since about April of last year. So hopefully experience will help give me a better understanding moving forward.
i gotta assume it's more crowded since tickets are at their cheapest right now - i'd much rather go out of my way to attend the parks for a $104 day than the more convenient $194 of winter break!
Yes! That and someone else pointed out the $50 kids tickets have started as well. So all in all a really cheap time to visit.

So I actually think those days will be LESS crowded until the Mix-In begins because anyone without a hopper ticket will likely choose DCA as their park for that day.

If beginning of March was like mid-December, you’ll have a lot of people holding out for the following week or two which are easier to travel due to being off school/work.
December 14th and December 24th are like night and day crowd wise. Hopefully the same is true for you hitting right before Spring Break.
The first truly busy day last year was March 13th if I recall.
We’re going first weekend of March. I thought this might be a good time to go?
March will have Food and Wine Festival going on, so the Resort might be a tad more crowded. But most of those crowds will be in DCA.
Last year, the first really crazy day for Spring Break Crowds was March 13th. Up until then, it was mostly pretty decent crowd wise.

Off-season? Ha - there is no off-season.
We are going at the end of Jan and I thought it was gonna be less peopel lol well we will do our best my chils has autism so we wanted to go when less crowded
Apply for a DAS pass if you weren’t planning on doing that already.
DAS is Disability Access Service. It’s essentially a free Genie+ that also works on rides that don’t have Genie+ like Jungle Cruise or Peter Pan.
This allows you to not have to wait in line.
I believe for Lightning Lane rides, you still have to use the Lightning Lane, so there’s a small wait.
But for the rides without, you actually go in the exit or pretty close to it and it’s an almost instant on the ride.
You can apply before you go, or when you first arrive. I’ve heard it’s pretty quick and painless on site, where the online takes some time, but I think you can select 2 rides in advance if you do it online before you go. So that’s an added perk.
Don’t quote me on the advanced booking thing, I’ve never used the service as I don’t have a need or anyone in my family that has one. But this is what I understand from others and researching the program.

The Mickey/Pixar parking structure has a tram, but you can also walk, which we used to do all the time when we had a stroller.
On the second floor of the Pixar Pals side of the structure, near the escalator/elevator is a bridge that leads to Downtown Disney.
You can walk over there and enter security through Downtown Disney, which is usually less crowded.
Then you can walk to the park through Downtown Disney.
It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the parking structure. Give or take.
I still walk back to the parking structure from the park rather than take the tram most days because the tram lines get busy around 6-7 PM
How is early June crowds?
So 2 out of 4 annual passes are blocked out for the whole Summer starting on June 7th, meaning that June 3rd through June 6th are probably going to be pretty busy with passholders getting their last fill before they get blocked out since they won't be able to return to Disneyland until mid-August.
The 7th and beyond will probably be a little less crowded.
Than July?? What's going on?!!!
So I’ve started to learn that because the Summer blocks out 2 of 4 annual passes, and Saturdays in July block out 3 of 4 passes, that it’s actually better to visit when the most passholders are blocked out, rather than a time like now which used to be considered “off season”

Lot of ride closures... yikes..bad rep Disneyland. Too much crowds 4 rides
Temporary closures happen. It’s unfortunate, but they do. If it’s a technical issue, that’s definitely on Disney. But I do know that sometimes rides close because someone dropped a hat on the track (Rise of the Resistance). You’d think it’d be simple to just pick up the hat and move on. But they have to turn off the ride to enter the track, and rebooting the system takes 45 minutes.
And they say the economy is bad 🙄
We’re here right now and completely astounded at the crowd level!! Looks like the $50 kids tix mixed w/the SoCal $75/3day package has worked in Disney’s favor… But not in ours (we’re visiting from CO) 🫠

I think you've hit it spot on. Disney has been hitting the discounts hard lately to increase crowd levels during typically quieter times.
You’re so kind! Hey, being in Disney is always a magical, joyous privilege so we’re happy no matter what! As out of towners, we often grab Genie+ (we just won’t get back as much as locals, so it makes great sense for us), but even that has had some wild return times (25 min wait for Haunted Mansion at 1:30pm…yet 8:50pm return time for lightening lane? Weird). Our last day is tomorrow (Fri) and we just know we’ll take our time and enjoy what we can - patience and kindness go a long way! I also suggest people take a resort day to enjoy the SoCal weather (it’s like -10 in CO this week, so 70 is definitely a pool day for us)!

And I think Haunted Mansion is just because it’s closing for what is rumored to be 7ish months, and the last day is Sunday. So this will be many people’s last fill of it and they just grabbed lightning lanes without much regard to when it was.
