- French chef Daniel Boulud challenges amateur cook Jessica to keep up with him as they progress through Boulud's Tunisian brik pastry recipe in 15 minutes with their backs to each other. Without the benefit of visual aids, Jessica attempts to keep up with chef Boulud's hurried audio instructions (and accent).
An updated version of Daniel Boulud’s book "Letters to a Young Chef" came out on October 3. In it, he shares the story of his career and the lessons he has learned along the way.

Daniel Boulud Challenges Amateur Cook To Keep Up With Him | Back-to-Back Chef | Bon Appétit
"I don't know how it is called in English, so good luck."
Amount of fucks given were really low that day. hahahaha
My favorite comment.
Yes my favorite haahahahaha
WHATA A MDFCKR 🙄
Should be a WORLD wide motto
Him: "There is five sides"
Her: "Like a hexagon?"
Him: "Yea, like a hexagon"
Her: *Cuts it into a rectangle*
And hexagons have 6 sides anyway, smh
Charlie yes that was part of the joke...thanks captain..
I think she was imagining a hexagon when it was unfolded
Orlando Kwok-Cameron i know you're joking
Technically it is a hexagon, the five cut sides and the one folded
I think she did really well considering how fast he was going
they are doing like 20 min recipes in like 13 min. Thats why they have to go quick. Also makes it a tad bit harder. these are all easy to do..
I would off mess up badly.
And with his tough vocabulary 😂
@@alhutch1798 YES EXACTLY.. like you have no time to think bout cleaning. Ur obvi used to method you follow urself and if it doesnt involve clean working then itll end up like that.. but with a bit more time she could have worked cleaner and better. (A cleaner workplaces gives you a better image of what to do) AND HOW DOES ONE GRATE A POTATO IN 30 SEC😨🤣🤣🤣
Id panick and just quit doing what he tells me and go with my own flow 😂😂 like everything you need is in front of you, nothing extra to get confused.. just use ur instincts 😝🤷🏻♀️
He seems to be the friendliest/nicest among all the chefs who have done this.
Bobby Flay was pretty kind imo
The girl looks more like a chef, the chef looks like a old teacher trying to get kids to do their work
Nah Ramsay was the nicest
Gordon left the group*
Carla is the nicest
"are you keeping your station clean, Jessica?" -cut to her station covered in cut up bits. Hilarious editing!
said every guest chef ever on this series!
her station is still way cleaner than shane's! lol
She did a great job! Especially since there was a bit of a language barrier.
They both were speaking English. What do u mean?
For a Frenchman, I find his accent to be quite 'thin'. Please don't ask too much from him...
Edit: gotta love people deleting their comment
His instruction were a bit vague I think that's what she meant
+nicolas boulet she said "a bit"...
+slick don't be thick...
Chef Boulud was so kind! This is probably my favorite one so far!
He was pretty nice to her!
Ronan OhAlluin well I mean, she did a pretty good job
out of the three participants, she was right there with the chef !
britton slightly easier recipe, but he was super fast.
Other than the little egg misshap she did spot on. Looks just like the chef said homely.
She was pretty good at keeping up. And she figured out what the different ingredients were, for the most part.
Much better than the last 2 individuals. Well done Jessica.
the last 2 were the same person?
CHAU i was saying her completed dish looked better than than the last 2 people’s dishes
You mean the last two dishes because the same person made the last two
Other than the scary knife skills, Jessica did a very admirable job. Besides the fact that no "Amateur Cook" would be making this dish.
Yes, but were you under time pressure when you made it the first time, with kind of unclear instructions from behind you? I think she did really well, considering the circumstances!
@@CarameliaM Nina didnt badmouthed her actions, she highlighted the fact, that a beginner can make the dish, and this is true. the problem wa,s that he used offical terms for cutting vegetables, while she is a beginner
Chef Daniel Boulud I do like as i've seen him cook elsewhere. He was also real gracious to Jessica. So far in these challenges, Jessica has been the best Amateur Cook in performance. The overall funniest Chef duo and video though remains Gordon Ramsay and Shane. I luv the dish they created as well, interesting technique.
Ardent Dfender “uhhhh, idk metric”
I would have fell behind just peeling the potato. Kudos to her.
They were so charming. They should cook together again.
She did pretty well compared to the guys who have done this before her.
I agree, but I like the cook who went up against Gordon and Bobby better. Mainly just because he did horrible and his personality was funny
Pretty sure Shane only eats like microwaved food, and instant noodles, and just like super basic stuff that you only toss on the pan without prepping when he has to cook for himself based on his knife skills.
Go Jessica! I cooked professionally for seven years and this recipe is really technical! All things considered she did better than anyone else!
Why is this man purposefully going so fast lol! But Jessica is honestly so adorable!
I think it was because they only had 15 minutes to finish this recipe.
They've done it like this for all the episodes. I think they find it funny and it sort of rams home the difference between how professionals work and communicate versus laymen. I don't remember them allowing questions from previous amateurs or she was the first one to actually ask for clarification.
because that's how you cook. you cant take ages for everything or it's gonna be overcooked
Not the fastest he could have gone, did you see Ramsay's? Haha
Not to mention he is probably thinking in French but having to speak in English...
What an honor to cook with him!! He was so sweet to her too 🌱
5:47 "A disposa-bowl? That's a good idea." 😂 at least that's how I heard it lol
Oh hail. My favorite chef. This is going to be great.
Jessica did great. Love this series!
The only thing worse than commenting on a video before you actually watched it, is commenting on your own comment.
All things considered, she did pretty well!
OK, now we are going to take the feuille de brique, THE WHO ?
I am dead! HAHA
Impressive how cleanly he works, very satisfying
Please, please have Shane attempt to keep up with a French-speaking chef!!
He is such a sweetie. With his achievements along with being French one assumes he would be arrogant but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Why does French mean arrogant ?
It's just a common stereotype. Like Germans having no sense of humor, Spaniards being lazy, Poles being stupid, etc.
In her defense, he did not specify that only the egg yolk was was going into the dish.
that was one of several omissions in his verbal instructions..
Won't disagree with you there. In my opinion, for the most part, he gave great instructions. It's just the egg yolk step was the prominent mistake that stood out to me. She did a great job overall.
He said explicitly to split the egg up
So split the egg and then add the whole thing? Plz
I'm thinking something along the lines, "Split the egg, separate the egg yolk then add the egg yolk."
I just explained how, "Split the egg" can easily be mistaken as something like "Crack the egg".
She's been the best at keeping up so far
I would of been on step 3 when he was on step 6.
I love to cook and I cook several times per week, and I highly doubt I would have done any better than Jessica. Well done!
She did great. Would eat it for sure. He's very critical, good to learn from.
I love her SO MUCH!!! She is such a good sport! She was trying to do the dish the best she could while being relaxed! I love her!!!!!!!
This woman is so confident and comfortable on camera. It's so fun to watch these two cook
I love this. So much better than the denigrating schadenfreude of those TV shows that shame people. Good fun and full of tiny little bits of info to expand your ideas on cooking.
My girl did damn good.
Publish more of these, I could watch them all day! These amateurs are actually doing a great job following top chefs like this
Chef Daniel Boulud is the best! I love his restaurants especially the one in Miami 😍
Jessica is a joy to watch! She's so pretty and she's got such a great smile ❤️
Where's my boi Shane
einKolner I enjoy more watching Shane too 😂😂
He got too good
RJ Bubba lol I doubt it tho 😂
Shane was awesome
"random guy"
I love how patient and nice he was to her.
Bring this series back!! It has such potential!!!
Chef: Put a bit of egg white there
Her: *sees no egg white since she put it on the wrap together with the yolk*
Her: *takes the brush and tries to get the remaining egg white on the cutting board* 😂😂😂 god she's adorable 9:42
Larissa Kensington OMG, I died laughing when she started doing that. AMAZING. She never gave up and was totally a great sport about it.
The chef is polite....For a French guy
She does pretty well considering she was unfamiliar with recipe. Would like to see another pro chef try to follow a new recipe, with new techniques, this way.
Alex Rawlings exactly. Two pro chefs
She's too good to be on this show to be honest.... she did very well... But she super cute which is nice... This is a great series
Sankofa NYC why you sound Indian Bro? X>D
She tried. He was moving like he was in the weeds during a dinner service. lol
These back to back episodes are addicting to watch
I see a lot of people like Daniel the best, but I think Gordon Ramsay was by far the funniest to watch!
Josh Brown I burst out in laughter when the amateur cook said "it's so finely chopped, you wouldn't even know there's paprika in there".
Limbis Pepper, not paprika
i know right :D
wow - he was so nice and she actually followed him pretty well. it's awesome to watch
Parschley
She was so close!!! If it weren’t for the language barrier... but that was what made this so adorable!
These are the best.
As an up and coming culinary student, I really enjoy these videos. I kind of look at them as insight to who I am now, and what I will one day be like. We really need more of these videos!
She did fantastic considering she didn't speak the same language that 60% of the directions came in
She did incredible compared to the other guy they had on previously
Plus chef had French accent and didn’t know half the words in English
Always amazed at how clean the chefs keep their station
"Hows the grating going?"
"Grate"
They're both so sweet and wholesome it made my heart warm. I would love to see Jessica on another episode, he's adorable! Did great too!
please make more of these! once a week!!!
This is made harder just by the simple language barrier. "I don't know what it's called in English, so good luck." I LOVE DANIEL BOULUD
they were both so cute haha. I think he was going so fast because this is something you have to make quickly and not overcook and do the salad and stuff while it was cooking so it needed to be done at a certain time. plus it's all about trying to keep up with an actual chef and how fast they would do it! I loved this one
6:22
*while holding giant knife* "The black dot?!"
😶😕
This is one of the hardest Tunisian recipes in existence, maybe the hardest pan fried recipe in the world to my knowledge. She did AMAZING considering all of that!! Also, the whole egg is the farmer version of the Tunisian briq, so her briq is perfect to me.
The most amazing thing by far is how clean his chopping board is
I didn't realize these used to be so much harder. Damn. I'm glad they take more time explaining things now, it gives the celebrities a fair chance.
Next video; Gordon Ramsay challenges Daniel Boulud to keep up with him.
Aaron Shi honestly they are pretty evenly matched. Both are great chefs.
Daniel Boulud is Gordon's mentor lmao. You should have said the opposite
I love that the chef is mostly talking about the 'positives' of her dish, he is so nice XD
This one was the best so far! loved how he explained it to her at the end
This was very enjoyable to watch! It’s great how she, like the other guy before her, kept a good sense of humor while being uncertain during cooking. Cooking at home should be about enjoyment, so that’s a great attitude to have. She followed the instructions well, and I’ll bet she will improve greatly with practice!
Jessica did super well consudering how complicated the recipe is, and how fast the chef was going.
Rly love tis series.. pls do moreeee...
She did a phenomenal job. I don't know how she was able to follow him half the time. Wow!
it's like BuzzFeed but good!
this is just savage, but she did a pretty good job
People saying he was going to fast
But it’s literally called “challenges amateur cook TO KEEP UP with him”
He did not go to fast he probably slowed down actually
"That's about 30"
literally puts 30 capers
She was by far the best so far!
Now, we gonna have the frixaasbrikkk.
The who?? Lol
Everytime the chef said “pepper” (paper)... lol if I was in the girls place I would’ve been really confused why we would put paper in the potato
A clean station is so aesthetically pleasing
Why do all of the amateur chefs seem like they've never used a knife before. They literally just hit the food with the knife and hope it gets cut well.
The key word here being amateurs. :P
This series, it’s alive and the 24 shift videos are my faves!
She has such a happy attitude for having it so hard with the accent and french words.
This was great 😂 they are both so funny 😂
This man is adorable and I want to see him more!
I realize language had a lot to do with it...but his instructions were nowhere near as clear as Gordon Ramsay or Bobby Flay. The fact that her dish wasn't a lot worse is impressive.
i love french people hes so lovely
Can these two please have a regular cook show?
Daniel is awesome!
These shows are so good by the way. Super entertaining.
This was adorable and hilarious 😂😂😂
This guy's lovely! I want to cook with him.
By the way, we like when they have fun and are kind to eachother. Kill the clock, and let them enjoy themselves. Cooking should be fun.
Give this girl a job! She was great! Considering how fast he went
lmao this chef is so neat and this duo is so great to watch
I'd give 5 mins off my durned life to cook with Daniel Boulud. She doesn't seem aware of his legend, LOL, which was maybe a good thing. :):):) LOVED the "onion-looking thing" re: shallots. :) This was wonderful. Chef was very kind to her; in his kitchens he isn't especially known for that ( demanding, meticulous, as well he should be), so I salute him for his patience & sweetness to her.
OMG, I love these two cooking. Best video out of all of them. Hahaha. Jessica was a trooper and the chef was such a great sport. AMAZING!
Well done, Jessica! She did great!!! He raced pretty quickly through a lot of it without much detail - he barely told her to separate the egg - I would have missed that entirely, and he told her to cut the wrapper instead of trim it. She also seems to know her way around a kitchen pretty well, and better than most. And she’s perfectly charming and has a great enthusiasm. I don’t agree that he was easy on her... Gordon Ramsay ate a “crab cake” that looked like the dog’s dinner and complimented the taste.
He's so friendly~~ I'm gonna try this recipe now~
She is very patient, and good skills for an amateur. Good video.
He tried to make this extra complex but couldn’t crack that egg ! Great job !!
Keep these coming! I love this! Reminds me of the old show Can't Cook, Won't Cook.
He's so funny and charming, and she did great!
She is So SOOOO LUCKY OMG. I would love to have an opportunity Like That!!!
