A Timeless Lever Reborn: Marlin's 1894 Classic

  • If the third time’s the charm, then Marlin’s freshly introduced 1894 Classic in .44 Magnum will be a real gem.
The youngster has tall boots to fill, and not just because of high expectations based on previous 1894s. The latest 1894 Classic finds itself the third model reintroduction under Ruger’s tutelage, close on the heels of the 1895 in .45-70 Government and the 336 in .30-30 Winchester.
Those rifles are already proving that the “new” Marlin is all business. We were lucky to get our paws on one of the first 1894s to roll off the lines in North Carolina.

Good to see Ruger keeping Marlin alive. I keep waiting for the 357mag. I had to buy Henry’s side they have them in my preferred caliber. Shoot straight and safe.

It's just a matter of a wait, they'll make them. I'm waiting as well in fact! I personally don't like most Henrys....I just never cared for a firearm to have so much mim'd metalwork or die cast alloy receivers (certain models).........Henry does do a few things surprisingly well, such as inletting stock tangs and blue.

The 357 is now available. Got mine a month ago. 18 1/2" barrel. Put Skinner sights on itand simply rugged sling and cartridge cuff.

Love my Marlin 1894c in 357/38. Got it in 2007 with the JM barrel. I've got the Skinner sights on it. With the Wild West big loop. Hands down, my favorite rifle.

I bought one of these Marlin 1894 44mag rifles years ago just before Rem took over. This became one of my favorite rifles for deer and hogs here in Florida. I use mine with the iron sights. So far my favorite ammo is win white box, 240 gr. JRNSP ammo. My Marlin loves it.

I've owned one of these for many years and it is one of my favorites. I am shooting Winchester white box ammo 240 grain JSP. It is a fun rifle to shoot and is handy for deer and hogs.

I have a nice collection of Marlin lever guns. Last summer, we had to evacuate from the Northwest Territories due to wildfires. We left Yellowknife and drove to Haines Junction, Yukon for three weeks. I could only take one gun. It was my Marlin 1894 in .44 Remington Magnum. Great for camp and hiking defense from bears. Always great for small game. Fun to shoot. Wasn't sure my other rifles would still be there for awhile, but if it all burned down, I'd still have my .44 Magnum. Shoots like a dream, carries well, points great, reliable, good capacity, looks unassuming. What's not to love?

Just brought one these home today and itching to get it out along with my 2019 Remington Marlin, which Believe it or not is a pretty good quality rifle done by Remington. I didn’t get one of those Remlin QC nightmares I’ve heard so much of.
Remington actually did the 94 in 45 colt fair justice…at least on the one I bought.

While I love sinking my teeth into an original vintage Winchester, circa 1873-1930 or so, for the collector side, for many years my shooting pleasure has been the many JM marlin levers that were on the market. I am so very proud that ruger stepped in to save this classic brand that meets and exceeds our expectations. I actually found this platform in 357 magnum the other day as well. Fit and finish absolutely superb. Big hand to the crafts people in North Carolina putting their hands on pride into their labor in each and every part of these great pieces of art! And thank you mam for an excellent review as usual. Keep up the great work! Btw, great shooting for someone who says she can’t really see the target…

When I bought my Henry in 357, Marlin wasn't owned by Ruger. Ruger has done a very good job with bringing Marlin back. My dad told me that good whiskey costs money, the same is true for firearms

I've wanted a level action in 44mag for years. I Love my Ruger Redhawk and just think it would be cool to have an interchangeable lever gun to go with it. Especially since my arthritis is getting worse and the 44mag definitely makes me feel it after a good range day, so been switching to shooting special, figure I keep special on the Redhawk and mag in the Marlin if I ever get one.

I own two Lever Rifles. Marlin 336W in .30 WCF and Henry's Big Boy in .44mag. I like the Marlin and use it for hunting purposes. But I must say, it's not a Henry's Rifle. It's a beautiful Rifle and a tack driver too.

I am fortunate to have grabbed all 3 JM Stainless, straight grip laminate stocked, 16" barrel 1894s, 357, 44 and 45LC...
Hope Ruger brings these back but with Threaded barrels and pic scout rails... Not traditional but SO useful/practical, with a touch of Steampunkishness !! LOL !!

I Hope Ruger will fix the specs on this version or if more pop can adjustments will be needed. The earlier Marlin version had a low carrier that allowed a nasty let in 2 jam.
I discovered this error when mine happened to let in 2 as a 500lb black bear was walking toward me inside of 40yrds in a small open field on my way to the back field range**. Luckily black bears are pretty docile when they're not protecting little ones and I was able to turn it around by raising my arms(with now harmless club) and barking "no! Go HOME!" like I would to a dog.
It's not the first or last bear encounter I've had(county brings them here from towns), but my favorite lever letting me down really sucked. I had to remove the side cover to clear it, and later shimmed the carrier to prevent it. 1894c/.357mag
**(all I wanted was to chamber a round JIC)

I've had 3 Marlin 44 1894's: WHAT A WASTE!! NONE ever worked; one out of 50 rounds would load!! SHOW us the action; the 1873 would lift, align then feed rounds straight in...these 1894's angle-up push rounds relying on luck and a prayer they'll chamber!!! DID RUGER FIX THIS CREATING A NEEDED WORKING ACTION??? LIKELY NOT as they implied in that disclaimer!!!
