  • The internet, and the ever-present smartphones from which we cannot detach ourselves, are changing the ways we relate to technology - and, at the same time, changing the way we use our brains. Senior Contributor Ted Koppel talks with technology critic Nicholas Carr, software developer Justin Rosenstein, “media psychologist” Byron Reeves, and Sen. Mark Warner about how the internet and social media have become weaponized, and how it is our attention spans that are being targeted.

People tend to forget that the internet is used for more than just entertainment. I personally use it for knowledge and connecting to the outside world. Because of my financial situation I'm unable to travel much, but reading and watching videos about what's going on in the world really helps. Plus, I'm teaching myself a new skill and it's all because the internet exists.

As one entertainer said about social media it is "toxic". Anyhow as a teen in 70s I believe we now have Better technology that has made us worse communicators.

I can't believe that CBS ran such an important piece on Easter Sunday! Even casual church goers were going to miss this! They need to replay it on 60 Minutes and at prime time!

If someone was to really declare cyber war, they'd do something to completely shut off the internet. People would go crazy. Just look what happens when the power goes out for a couple of days after a storm, people care more about their phones then food and water.

IMO this is All by design, a step in a wider psychological operation. Get people "hooked" and it's a wrap

Very interesting I’m a secondary school teacher and I’m so convinced that this technology has affected my students in terms stop thinking they have all the answers and they are not prepared mentally how to use so much information 🤔

I watch classic television programs to detox from my cell phone. In 50 years people will use smart phones to detox from our brain chip.

At this mile post seems we have more innovation and lesser quality communication amongst neighbors.

A nice conversation for caution. What this author sees is in a song accompanying "To Sir, With Love" (the movie with Sidney Poitier): . . ."how do I thank you for taking me from crayons to perfume." . . . or words to that effect. I just think that people are going to grow intellectually in astounding pace and direction. It's almost like the prophets of the Bible beating their chests (equality) wearing sackcloth (spirit & flesh . . . equality again) and throwing ash into the air (loss of spirit & flesh). The same sort of thing happens with children emerging from the atomic family unit and swimming in the ocean of knowledge . . . with smartphones & the internet. The possibilities are extraordinary!

The rude language used in the part of the video between 2:47 and 2:51 was unnecessary.
