How social media makes adolescence even harder

  • The new dramedy "Eighth Grade," about a painfully shy 13-year old stumbling through her last week of middle school, is the first film for writer-director Bo Burnham and for its young star, Elsie Fisher. But there's more to the movie than the usual teen angst and acne. There's the loneliness that, research tells us, is becoming more pervasive for young people as social media increases in influence. Tracy Smith talks with Burnham, and with San Diego State professor Jean Twenge, author of "iGen," about how the internet is making adolescence even tougher.

Why do parents act like they have zero control over their kids? I'm a millenial. When I was a kid , my parents had almost complete control over what devices I could use.

The truth is most kids will find a way. Growing up, kids with strict parents always found away around it. Your parents read your text messages? buy a cheap phone at Walmart and use it to text boys. Your parents demand your instagram password? Make a new account with a nickname and give them a password to a different account. Your parents forbid you from going to your boyfriends party? Sneak out the window at night. I'm not saying all kids are rebellious, but if kids wanted to be, a parent couldnt control them.

I'm sure that our Cave ancestors had the same problem when kids started Cave drawings and parents told them " Hey kid get away from the wall and go outside " ...The most disturbing part of the clip was the group of kids on the staircase only cluster there for cell service and not engaging with one another.

Darrell English and that’s the biggest problem with social media and teen they are disconnected and don’t even realize what they are lacking. Which is one to one connections and self awareness. My 12 year old is guilty of it to but I took her phone for a week for making a social media account and she literally reverted back to connecting with the things she did before getting her cell phone. I will say this though when we are playing a board game together or dinner she does ignore her phone so I’m thankful for that 😃

Parents should require that their teenagers contribute financially to family data plans. Most teenagers I have asked have no idea what their family plans cost or what their share should be. Responsible use of these devices starts by requiring increased personal responsility in other areas of their lives.

Daniella McKim lets go back to primary landlines and use flip phones and PDA's. If you want to use TH-cam or social media use a PC or Laptop instead. Thats how it should be 👍

I don't see the necessity of giving smartphones to teenagers. If they are difficult because of their hyper-reliance on a phone, then, clearly, the logical conclusion is to take it away from them. If they need a phone, give them a flip phone or give them a rotary phone and tell them to plug it in whenever they need to make a call. Or. Tell them to get a job, earn money, and pay toward that bill/phone. That'll teach them this concept of responsibility that parents are supposed to teach them.

This is how phones were handled when I was growing up years ago. The truth is having a phone and having a smart phone means the same thing in todays world. When a 12 year old gets their first phone, its simply not going to be a flip phone. There are now cheap and readily available smart phones, its almost harder to walk into a sprint or verizon store and find where they keep the flip phones (if they offer any).

All I can say is that I am real great full that I was born in the late fifties. A lot of things ARE much better in this
period compared to that time. Cars, entertainment options, skis, bikes, health care, appliances, computers etc.
Still, now we are more disconnected now that we were back then. Smart phones are a real double edged
sword. I refused to get one and I know that I chose well....There is an expression from my parents generation. "Everything in moderation"
