  • Have you ever heard the saying;
"Once you've gotten the message, it's time to put down the phone"
There are many stages to addiction, and ultimatley, recovery and I take a look at some of them in this video. In my own rambling, non cohesive way of course.
Bare with me on this one. I got off on a few tangents, but I think there is a good message in this video.

Day 6... I did 4 months last year.... 30 years of getting drunk, spending thousands on $50 bottles of bourbon and $15 6 packs of IPA, shit choices in women and just wasting time. Don't remember much either especially the "good times".....did about 6 months when I turned 40 and got super fit. Now at 48 40lbs of extra fat, time to turn shit around. Fucking boo-ooze is evil!

Subbed, alcohol has ruined my life over and over again and I poured the poison down thinking it would change the past. At 55 I may have run out of time but even so I will finish sober. Your tone and content are right on, I hope many are helped by your example while they have their lives ahead of them. Drink steals your time, your money and hope, eventually it takes your life and the decades can never be recovered.

Spent a long time fighting for recovery, it took 7 years to finally hit absolute abstinence and am now 2 years clean off booze. It’s been a journey, learning to live with no sharp edges blunted. But weirdly, I’ve become the person I always had the potential to be. I wouldn’t change my journey, I think it’s made me the compassionate and empathetic woman I am today. I used to say drinking was the art of boredom and for someone like me, boredom was my nemesis. These days I write a blog about addiction and write poems, had you said I’d be doing that in my twenties, I’d have laughed at you from over my large dry white wine. Great vid. 😊

So 1 year sober I find myself focusing the effort I put into drinking into tackling my other self improvements. 40 lbs have come off I’m watching my diet. Exercise is coming along slowly and I’m finding I want to venture farther out of the comfort zone. In today’s fucked up society I sometimes question the value of sobriety but I won’t go back to drinking.

I'm holding pretty good with being sober and really loving it. I think it's now about 9 months of being sober. Though the tough thing for me was the amount of friends I stopped seeing because I quit drinking. So I'm glad that I have music in my life, cause without any hobbies I don't know If I could handle it. Great video. I'm 60 and have drank since 1982. Never did it in college - played football, and just never was a party guy. Went to work in Atlanta, GA and co-workers (young ones) would get me to go out with them to the clubs, and there you go... I'm on another dry month to lose some weight and get my blood pressure down. Don't drink liquor, but lots of beer. I stopped for a year in 2014 and lost over 50 pounds. I'm a semi-retired high school math teacher and have a lot of time to enjoy beer in the afternoon when I get home...setting out on the deck listening to radio. Sorry for rambling. I don't know if I'll ever quit. Alcoholism runs on my dad's side of the family all the way back to Scotland. I did subscribe and enjoy your frankness and real talk. Keep making these; I'm sure a lot of folks will benefit. Jack

This video has definitely made sense, a hell of alot of sense.. you touched on nutrition, it is essential to change your diet aswell as just giving up alcohol.. Breakfast these days mainly consists of eggs, mushroom, spinach, baby plum tomatoes etc, lunch would be a bowl of sprouts, broccoli, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, sweet potatoes, quorn and such alike... the fresh feeling is something I want to keep up, exercise is essential too, the speed of change is dramatic, definitely getting there this time, thanks for letting us be part of your wagon! You sir are in the driving seat!

Hey Benjamin, this exactly what I needed to hear man. My main motivation has been all about focus on what I want to accomplish right now, spent Canada Day sober for the first time since being a teenager and realised how all of my social interactions were alcohol based, ended ip feeling a bit sober and alone, turned my attitude around through the day and just spent time with family and wrote poetry, here is one of them. It’s about people in my life and feeling alone but then realizing I have everything I need inside of me.
    Fireworks
I’ve shared my plans, but at face value
I used my voice which is my most sincere attribute
Actions beyond that moment became more aloof
I chose time with others very near as proof
With that time I know we’ve all been sincere
A silver fire with you all still in my circle, has flown us into outer space
The circle keeps flickering as I stare my future in the face
But I don’t see them anymore.
New ways of doing things shows I care evermore
This love is third eye, leaving demons in the dust
Let’s see the fireworks that we can trust
In our own separate beds, dreaming sweetly
As if this day was never seeking
I see it now, I can feel us breathing
You’re with me anyways, soundly sleeping

Wow, our relationship to music is very similar. Didn't create enough when I drank and drugged really hard. I'm still drinking but I cut out 95% of it. I used to take lots of drugs. Quit them completely. But since I've done that I've been creating. Learning to make electronic music. But didn't have the discipline to learn guitar properly. Discovered the same podcasts too including the ones with Rollins on JRE and Maron. Maron, JRE and Radiolab is great along with This American Life. However, more closer to the subject, you might like The Moth book and Podcast. It's full of inspiring stories from inspiring people. You'll most likely like it as you've expressed gaining inspiration from guests on JRE or Maron.

it's that "back to square one" ! THAT's the one that helps the most! I went through that when I quit smoking in 05, and though I've had a few moments where I've been really close to asking someone for a cigarette, I haven't done it! I know that the surest way back to being a smoker and suffering all the ill effect (both health and financial) would be to take a single puff! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I want the same feeling about drinking! I want that same... AIN"T GONNA DO IT and blow all this time and struggle to hell? NO WAY! ... like you I've quit several times but this time, I'm just psychologically done with the whole process... the whole waking up to a hangover, swearing booze off and doing the same thing the very next day, the futility of just trying to get out of the trap is so disheartening! Thank you for sharing what inspires you to stay sober!

Also, music is everything. Why are most musicians I know addicted to alcohol?! Ive been playing guitar and writing for as long as I've been drinking... The two used to go hand in hand. Now I find it to be a massive struggle to write anything.... Unless it's punk music. I've been writing alot of that, but nothing from my soul! Ya know!?

    • @BenjaminLeeWright

That sucks to hear man but I am very happy to hear that you are considering a sober life. One of the biggest lessons for me was that i realised how little I had in common with a lot of the people that I was hanging out with. My philosophy now is that I would rather have fewer people around me but going in the right direction then being with a bunch of people I don't like and going along with the herd.

    • @BenjaminLeeWright
      @BenjaminLeeWright  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think musicians are so susceptible to drugs and alcohol because they are sensitive by nature and also they explore emotions where as most people run away from them. That is my theory anyway. I wrote a lot of songs a few years back and I got in a very emotional state when I did. It is very powerful.
Don't beat yourself up on your writing. it comes and goes so just embrace it when it does. Thanks for checking out the video bro and I hope these chats help.

I'm 1 month sober today. I was a binge drinker, I could go 3-4 days without a drop, them boom, knock out 10-12 beers in one sitting. A month ago, I just decided enough was enough. No rehab, no AA, I just wanted it out of my life. Right now, I've never felt better. Tons of energy,, no more hangovers, starting to lean outta, etc etc.

Boredom is a huge part that keeps us getting back to getting smashed, you need to find something equally exciting to fill that void. I am still a drinker, but I cut going to bars due to financial reasons for like two years now, even from this, my social life has changed a lot. It's kinda hard to just try and catch up with some of those people with whom I used to go out during weekends, they just start avoiding you since you are no fun anymore. Right then I realized, that people don't go to bars to maintain relationships, they do that so they can feel that they have an active social life even though nothing even remotely meaningful comes out of such activities, but when you don't know any better there's nothing else to do. Of course, if you manage to build a network of people with whom you share other activities then going to a bar is a nice thing to do celebrate something or catch-up, but most people just do that out of boredom.

I love your videos. Your speaking style is so fun to listen to and you touch on a lot of really good points that anyone on a serious path of self-improvement can relate to. I love everytime you talk about standing on your own, being able to trust yourself, and know when you say you're going to do something, that you will do it. I think that will be a huge motivation for me to go from merely choosing sobriety to sticking with it.
"I realized that all this time I was waiting around for inspiration...I was basically just getting fucked up." Hahaha that made me cry laugh. Way too relatable.

Thank you very much for your kind words.
Being able to trust myself is, without a doubt, one of the main benefits I have gotten from sobriety. Not only am I more dependable for everyone else but it gives me more and more confidence knowing that I will complete the tasks I set for myself.
It makes me realise that I am way more capable than I thought and that there are a huge amount of options open to me.
Glad you're enjoying the videos and getting something out of them. It makes it all worthwhile for me :)

Man these videos are awesome. Sounds like I'm in the exact same boat. I've been on and off alcohol for the past year but have finally gotten to the point that I am done. Only 6 days in now. On one hand it's gonna be the greatest thing I've ever done, the other hand I am so scared about missing out and being happy without it. Just fighting with myself everyday. Thanks for the videos sir !

Great to hear you are making positive changes in your life. If there was one thing I would reccomend going forward, it would be to start making goals and moving towards them.
Sobriety can seem a bit pointless at times unless you have something tho aim for. That is when you are most likely to go back to old habits.
Think of all those things in life that you wanted to achieve but never got around to and then start making steps in that direction. It may take a while but you will be surprised how much you can start to achieve.
The more things you start to do, the more your confidence grows and you realise that you are capable of more than you thought.
Thanks for checking out the video and all the best with your positive life changes. Feel free to message me anytime.

Wish i have a friend like you. Amazing and inspiring mind. Indeed it's all about personal mindset, I've been on the same shit over and over, falling of the wagon when one day just said: fuck this shit!!! Things won't never get better if you repeat same stupid mistakes and expect different results. Alcohol nor smoking were enjoyable things,to understand that for me helped real look at myself and honest questions for self. Once you honest to yourself you won't be needing all this shit. Very good video and once again similar thinking. Thanks man.

    Wow!!
    Great video!!
I'll be sober 2 years January 15th 2023. Yes, just thinking about that raging freaking hangover the next day, and the anxiety & depression that comes with it, keeps me sober. I drank for 50 plus years.
Luckily, I'm still in pretty good shape health wise. But, that doesn't happen with most.
I drove myself to a rehab facility, and admitted myself. I saw some pretty hardcore folks in there, that was in pretty bad shape. Alot worse than I was. I'm glad I quit, when I did.

Love your videos they're very no nonsense and inspiring. I'm on 2 day two of sobriety I don't have the fear today, but do feel like I got the flu and feel like crap ( no cough mind ) my symptoms are totally self inflicted. On the subject of passions and interests I was so inquisitive when I was younger, now looking back at 52 it all just looks like so much time just wasted! This is were me and alcohol part company, I woke up yesterday and finally contemplated my own mortality. After a life drinking alcohol to make me feel normal something else finally has kicked in and that is "how much time do I have left" it's the most sobering thought I have ever had. Thanks again friend stay alive and well 👍

I think another reason people lose their interests is that they become part of 'the machine'. People get so physically and emotionally invested into their work. Then when they come home they dont feel like doin anything and thar feeling of wanting to sedate becomes greater.

I hear ya. That kept me down for a long time but then I realised that if I was ever going to get anything done that I would have to do it outside of work in my own time.

      Stick with it bro.

We moved to Singapore and stopped drinking. It was a revelation living in a non drinking Asian culture and then seeing the English and Aussie expats in their sports bars drinking themselves silly. When we eat out and decline the beer or wine the waiters get that fleeting look of approval on their faces. I think they must get sick of the brits getting tipsy on their wine. I was drink free for five months before I came home for Christmas and it was so bloody hard to resist when everywhere you go and every occasion is a reason to open a bottle. The first friend I saw poured me a Prosecco even though I’d had quite deep discussions a few weeks previously on why I didn’t want to drink. It has to be said the drab endless grey days and drizzle make it hard not to cheer yourself up the traditional way. I had a few nights on the booze again but it had lost its luster. I guess I was never in too deep. On the waggon again now and feeling great.
I know it’s fatal for you to have just one when you were strongly addicted (I think everyone is slightly addicted) but for me it was a learning experience and I couldn’t wait to get away from the booze soaked island and back to sobriety in the tropics. The more I drank the less I wanted to.

I can totally relate to your story, I’ve spent the majority of my adult life looking forward to the weekend so I could get hammered. But as a lover of heavy metal music I have always loved listening to the music while drinking. I’ve tried to stop many times but always go back, like you said, I can’t trust myself. I know I can stop for a few weeks or months but one day, feeling stressed or bored I’ll just say “fuck it” and start again, although I have to say 5 bottles of wine seems like an awful lot in one day lol

    • @BenjaminLeeWright
      @BenjaminLeeWright  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In the end it was easier for me to just stop rather than moderate my drinking. I am either all in or nothing.
Your right about 5 bottles being a lot but that was not that out of the ordinary for me around that time (on special occasions that is)
I had a lot of fun in those days but a lot of misery as well and the party is now over for me.
      I couldn't be happier
