    Judging from the symptoms I hear, think you need to check all the vacuum hoses. First one= vacuum advance to the distributor. No vacuum there will make some of the problems you're having. You're getting there, keep up the good work!!! PS If you lift [gas pedal], it should shift!! Again, vaccum!!!

    • @stevevarholy2011
      @stevevarholy2011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was thinking also if there is a service manual out there for it, the transmission diagnosis tree will also have the normal shift points for you. Usually in MPH if you don't have a tach.

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah and that is a Turbo 400 so it will have a vacuum modulator, right? Another thing to check regarding shift points.

    That's just how those 3 speeds shift, cranky as hell lol. Had one in my 93 Geo Metro years ago...horrifying when trying to accelerate to say the least

    That startup at the gas station, and the fact you said it’s dieseling ,need to check your timing. I bet it’s off, should still spin over quick and smooth, throw a timing light on it!

      @johnclark6571 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Had a ‘72 Chevy PU. When the starter would drag, I would turn the distributor to slightly retard the timing. Start it back up and move the distributor. Got pretty good at it in the 23 years I had it.

  • @sammolloy1

    Heat soak on Chevys started with their first V8. On Big Block Chevys of this era there was a little tin carport over the starter as a heat shield. They help some. Whoever changes out the first starter normally throws it away. It’s a bugar to get back in just the right place so the wires don’t short out.
    Unrelated: In Terminator 2 the robot is shown tightening vertical bolts on the starter of a Ford Bronco. Shit like that in a movie is distracting to me.

    You have to remember that's not a very powerful version of a 454. Those are built on a commercial chassis and they accelerate slowly, like a bus. That's for sure a Turbo 400 transmission, possibly even a Turbo 475. It shifts by a vacuum modulator but has an electric kickdown switch. Like other people have mentioned, it's probably a good idea to go over the vacuum lines when it gets warmer and make sure there aren't any broken hoses. A broken vacuum line will admit extra air and make it diesel. Don't just rip them off. There's a diagram somewhere under there and there aren't that many on an HD-spec engine anyway. The carb may need going through. One last thing...watch your steer tires very carefully, and keep a very close eye on your tire pressures. You do NOT want a blowout on that rig.

    • @ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182
      @ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks I'll look into that soon, hopefully it's just the lines causing it to shift late.

    Thanks for your videos and keep up the good work! I wanted to share some of my trials and tribulations with my 87 fleetwood southwind with the big 454. Mine had hard starting and crazy shifting also and no power intermittently. What I found after much difficulty was several damaged and destroyed vacuum lines. I also found my base ignition timing to be advanced way to far. After that I found that my choke spring was not opening the choke fully and that was causing big problems with power loss and high idle and hard starts when warm. I replaced the auto choke spring with a manual cable unit and its worlds different now. In addition I had to remove and clean all the battery cables and clean them and reinstall and replace the chassis battery disconnect solenoid. Mine was working but was not allowing the full current to pass through. After that it was all maintenance to the powertrain and now shes running great. I live in mine full time for now and it's a whole different story. Also the choke issue will cause it to diesel and smoke as u described mine did the exact same thing.

    Since I found you,which was 2 hours ago, I already watched 6 videos! Very entertaining, useful and aknowledgeable! I have just one problem with your RV. If I bought an RV, I would definitely buy a diesel, just like you. Older, so It's cheaper and more reliable, but as soon as I saw that it is automatic transmission my face went numb🙆‍♂️😂😂😂. Don't get me wrong. It's an older, I don't know 4speed maybe, and not a CVT Jetco garbage, but still diesel and stick is my favourite combo!Glad I found you. Good luck with your work, cars and be healthy!

    From the factory those 454’a had a metallic shield that protected the starter from the exsaist. However they rusted off and fell away after about ten years. I had the same issue on my tow truck back in the day and the heat wrap helped. It had got so bad I was driving around with a spray bottle of water and would have to crawl under and mist it till it worked.

    You might consider using a
    high mileage synthetic oil
    that is lighter weight than
    most motor oils during the
    winter months. Heavier
    weight motor oil has a
    high viscosity, meaning
    that when it gets cold it
    flows slower and can bog
    down an engine and even
    prevent it from starting
    at all during colder weather.
    Further more I've seen tests
    where synthetic oil blends
    run to the heat where oil is
    needed and conventional
    motor oils tend to lighten
    up in weight and then tend
    to bead up and disperse
    away from heat where the
    oil and lubrication is needed
    the most. Their doing remarkable
    things with these synthetic oil
    blends these days man.

    Nice one. A bit frozen there lol, and scared the dog when starting the camper lol. On the diesel truck check with a multimiter if all glow plugs are ok and if they getting power, if all ok you can swap for ones with a lower voltage like 11 volts or 10.5 volts and they will get hotter and the engine will start easier. Take care.
