    My ole man called clatterpiller ,but i just loved them in the Oshkosh lowboy with shutterstat radiators wich very few people will remember these days.

    I had a 75 KW with 1693 years back and was just a beast. One of the things I remember was how great it started in extreme cold. Prechambers, glow plugs & 24 volt starting was a lifesaver a few times. I can remember it started when the Detroit's & Cummins wouldn't

      Interestingly that seemed to me to be the story thats unfolding. I was always told they wouldn't start in the cold at all.

    Fabulous sounding! Nothing like the sound of a good old caterpillar, and a General motors detroit!

    That’s a gorgeous motorhome you’ve built….I’m not a CAT man by any means but I can sure appreciate that setup and the work you’ve done on the truck.

    Ahhh the sounds of the 1693 and Detroit, nothing finer. Thanks for letting us hear the startups, love it. That would lull me to sleep hearing those idle for a long time, just perfect!! Keep up the great work, Zach. I really enjoy your videos.

    Zach, I had a 1693 in my.’75 Pete, right on the dash was a plate that said
    “When using glow plugs to start, heat for 30 seconds then crank to start if no start in 10 seconds heat again for up to 1 minute and crank to start again” the plate had Caterpillar symbols on it and the old broken C logo. It also stated before putting the engine under load to idle up to 1000 RPM for at minimum 5 minutes to fully circulate oil, and do the same on before shutting engine off.
    I wish I had that old truck and the 1693 still
    Thanks for the great videos awesome job on your “Toterhome”!!
    th-cam.com/users/Jpaydirt is an awesome guy and I’m sure he would be happy to share his knowledge about the 1693 (D343) with ya!

      Thanks. I don't think I was heating it long enough. I had wondered how long cat recommendation was on the preheat. I have actually followed jeff for years. Thanks thought.

    Pretty good getting the 353 started without a little snort of either. In the 80’s when I was working in the woods everything was DD powered and we bought starting fluid by the case! It was just as important as oil and grease.

      When I put it together I use 21:1 kits, I'm sure that helped.

    Love that sound! I had a 1693ta in a 1970 little window pete (351 extended hood). A guy I worked with at George Transfer had a 71 351 with a 12v71. Said DIRTY DOZEN on the side of the hood. Didn't seem like it then, but, man those were the days!

    I had 3408 PCTAs. The cold morning starts were ear candy. People in the truck stop back home would just stop and stare. I lived in So. St. Paul, Minnesota. I had Ranger signs on the doors.

      We turned the idle screw down so the motor would hunt ,much like a harley. zieglers workshop .

    They would fire until the air cooled off requiring reuse of the glow plugs. I used to run one pulling a lowboy all winter long. There were times when I couldn't plug in the block heaters.

    Zach, that truck/camper is so very COOL. I had a friend who had a 1693 in a Freightliner back in 72 and when he cranked it I just knew it was going to blowup. The rattleingest thing I ever heard. My old truck would run very well (it was a cab over KW with a 335 Cummins and 4x4 airshift transmission and would run out about 85 but My friend would come around me out in west Texas and that ol Cat would be smooth and quiet. I'll keep track of your video's, and your truck is nice. Cheers.

      Thanks you. I drove an autocar with a 4 and air shifted 4 speed aux. I really liked it. I've actually drove a lot of twin transmission trucks with all the big winch trucks and stuff i've been around. Every one talks about how great a 5x4 or 6x4 was and I just think they are a pain.

    I had them start in the coldest weather, give the glow plus more once it starts till smooths out. They would start when nothing else would even try. 8s and 9s would work the same way.

    Know this is a year old now, but going into winter again, that cold you need to heat for ONE whole minute prior to the first crank, then when it fires, immediately go back to HEAT until it runs smooth. Straight from the CAT placards that engine was installed in their heavy equipment.

    Glow plugs for at least 1 minute below freezing; flip back to heat as soon as it starts until it smooths out.

    When you start a Cat cold, when it fires go back to heat until it smoothed out. It will only take about 15 to 20 seconds for it smooth out.

    Because of the low opening pressure of the NOZZLES not injectors you should idle up to avoid fuel slobbering

  • @kc033056
    @kc033056 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Two in one day, your really spoiling us today. Did you add more heat once it finally started like you talked about earlier today? I think 45 seconds might have helped, it almost went on the very first try. Thanks for the double header!! Kc

    • @TheZachLife
      @TheZachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did, while I was in the cab I was ether cranking or heating.

    I drove a 71 Pete with the industrial version of the 1693 and the man that owned it told me that when the squirrel s stop hitting the inside of the engine with hammers and it quiets down I could go to work. Not one minute earlier
    It was only supposed to be a 325 but it would pull Snowshoe one gear down at 70 mph grossing 100k
    Probably 325 at each wheel I guess
