- The Australian government has announced it will spend millions of dollars to help Pacific Island nations strengthen their banking systems, in part to prevent Australian banks pulling out of the Pacific.
The government is hosting US Treasury officials and Pacific leaders in Brisbane for the first Pacific Banking Forum amidst concerns that Chinese banks will try to fill the gap if more Western financial institutions pull out of the region.
