Audi TT MK1 Quattro Clutch Change Guide

  • This is a long video, because its a long job! Typically its an all day job- i can trim it down to 6 hours but i've done it countless times, and that's only if there's no issues along the way. If yore tackling this for the first time, it's well worth investing half an hour in seeing how it's done properly.
Changing the clutch on the Audi TT Quattro is a big job because of how much you have to remove to get access. the transfer box makes it a bit of a pig! Garages charge a lot of money for this job - i charge a fair amount aswell as its the biggest job barring engine removal that i undertake.
**This video will potentially save you a few hundred quid, and took me an extra couple of hours on the initial job, as well as a few hours editing to be able to help you save money, so please, if this does help you out, consider dropping me a few £££ to say thanks - link below.**
Take your time, make sure you've got everything you need before you start, and get stuck in. Good luck!
    ***For booking enquiries email bookings@bwstt.co.uk
***If this video has saved you a trip to your local garage, and you'd like to buy me a drink to say thankyou, then feel free to send me a donation to paypal.me/bwstt225?locale.x=e...

Nice video, Bryn. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm watching this after the event [well, almost] - just buttoning up the last few bits and pieces now. Mine was the first time and it took me a fair while but I figured that the cautious approach was the best approach! Cheers.

Great video! It’s the only complete video for a clutch job on a Quattro Mk1 TT. I’m getting the dreaded DMF “clunk” on my ‘01 225 roadster, so it’s time. Hope your shoulder is better. Thanks for helping keep the MK1 TT alive!!

You really keep it simple!! After watching your video, I pretty much think that I do it myself!! I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd and the gears ground a bit. I felt something come loose. Probably the gear fork. I lost everything but third gear. The transmission is stuck in third gear. I limped home in third gear. So, hopefully I take the gear box out and inspect it and hopefully I'm not too much in the woods!

    Superb video.
I wouldn't tackle that by myself but great to see someone share their obvious knowledge and experience on how to do this. Given the number of awkward steps involved then it's clearly a job for someone who knows what they are doing. How to find those knowledgeable people is another matter...

Gary Shanks, thanks for the pint! The new flywheel bolts come with loctite on them from factory, and the pressure plate bolts don't need any - if you want to use some though (for the pressure plate) then medium strength will suffice.

Thanks for the tutorial and all the tips and tricks! I couldn't help buy notice you not saying anything about doing the rear main seal while you're in there. Was this in a separate video that I've missed?
I'm about to be doing a power build on my TT Quattro Roadster with a BEA engine. I'll be switching to a Clutch Masters 01M6SPDSTG3CK kit which is marketed as "stage 3". I'm also pairing it with a Clutch Masters FW017AL 14lb single pound flywheel. I'm aware that I cannot count of this flywheel to absorb vibration like the stock dual mass does, and I'll learn to control that as I get used to the new setup. I'm also aware that adding power increases vibration. To counter this, I'll be upgrading the stock harmonic damper to a Fluidampr, which uses viscous silicon and all kinds of engineering to absorb extra vibration caused by removing the stock dual mass flywheel and adding power. This Fluidampr adds about 1lb to the harmonic damper, which means my 14lb flywheel will effectively become a 15lb flywheel. That being said, it's still a lot lighter than stock.

Hello:) Great video. I'm using it to change my rear main seal. Last thing I need to do after eight months of work rebuilding almost the entire engine and fixing every detail on the car after water pump failed and eight bent valves. 2001 TT quattro 4WD. The only thing left that I need is the extra long 8"+ 6mm allen key for the passenger side drive shaft bolt that is way in there... I have the other one out, and everything detached from everything. Except the two upper bolts of the gearbox, and the 6mm bolt in the center of the passenger side driveshaft. Question is, do I NEED to remove that passenger side 6mm interior drive shaft bolt? Or once I remove everything from the seam holding the engine together at the intermediate plate, where I can see the rear main seal, can I just start lowering it all as one piece? I have the prop shaft to the side, everything separated. Do you need to even deal with the flywheel? Can't I just lower the gearbox, transmission, two ends of the cv axle shaft and everything, with the flywheel and clutch inside of it, as one single piece, to see and access, and change the rear main seal?? lol, Thanks. My brain hurts:)

    • @BWSTT
      @BWSTT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

So, you can keep the transfer box mated to thr gearbox (leave the 6mm bolt in and the 4 bolts holding it on) it just becomes trickier. The rear main seal sits behind the flywheel, so youll need to fully remove gearbox and clutch.

    Thank you.
Don't ask me how I learned a dual mass flywheel won't work with a single mass pressure plate. South Bend Clutch was grand in swapping out for the right parts, months after the purchase. . Shipping charge only.

It seems everyone who gets involved with the car, wants it to succeed. It's the getting there. This summer will be the wind deflector and installing hydraulics for the top. Thank you again for your direction and suggestions. Without you, this would not be possible for me. @@BWSTT

Do you have a parts listing? What clutch kit and flywheel did you install? My slave cylinder just went, blew the seal

I would like to give you an update on this , which recently i have done , From Audi you only can buy the two small seals and the main big one is no longer available from the dealer ...im in the process of buying these from a seal manufacturer., Hopefully they will be the same size....
