    This was great! There are so many people out there claiming they are “true homesteaders”. To me, you guys are the real deal because you do your best! You do as much as you can…but it is 2023 and there are some things you just need to buy. I loved it when Michelle said “shame free, guilt free”. Absolutely correct. It isn’t all or nothing. Great job guys!

    Right off the bat, I will say this. If for whatever reason something doesn't work out for you all, it damn sure isn't because of lack of effort. You both are to be commended, for the pure balance that you both bring to the family.
    I know of people my age (60s) that can't support themselves individually. At your ages and the progress you are making, I can't wait to see what you have built in 5 years from now.
    Blessings and Joy to both of you and your family! You got it! Keep moving!

    Wow, great video of your time away camping as a family. The food looked absolutely delicious and it looked like you didn't lack for anything. Must say the cucumbers were so nice and green and looked really crunchy. Hats off to the local family, that are viewers, that supplied them. Glad that you enjoyed the S'mores as melting the marshmallows over a wood fire makes the flavor next level. One suggestion for the corn, is to leave the husk on the corn and shuck them after cooking, to help them burn less.

    • @maddierosemusic
      @maddierosemusic ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, some people open up the husk, pull the tassel, soak the ears, and put them on the grill in the husk to 'steam'.

    My youngest son and I go camping for at least a week every summer. Canada has a particularly lovely national and provincial parks system. One of the things we love to prepare on the campfire is corn. Normally, we leave the husks on, soak them in water for a few hours, then toss them directly on the coals. They steam and roast right in the leaves, and the leaves also protect the corn from burning. Delicious!

    When I grill corn I don't peel the leaves off, instead I leave them on only pulling them back to wash them and remove the silk, then soak the corn for a few minutes in clean water and grill. The leaves act as a buffer between the heat and the corn. Anyway, it is so easy and so good.

    I never remember to marinade meats either. So I had to start meal prepping and putting the marinades in the chicken bags and putting them in the freezer. Then, when the meat thaws, it marinates the whole time. Yummy. Yall had such an amazing time. Love it!

    When I made apples in my cast iron it tasted nasty. Nothing else tastes weird in it. Wonder what I did wrong. I thought it was a chemical reaction or something but then I see you doing it just fine. 🤔🤔🤔

      was something acidic added with the apples like lemon juice or something? anything acidic in cast iron can leech metals like nickel into the food and taste off.. ? just a thought.

      Yes! I did add some lemon juice! And it did taste like metal. Thank you- mystery solved. ❤❤❤

    Omgoodness, forget about the foil around your "baked" potato. A few years ago I had a 98 year old lovely woman tell me to just bury it in the coals. Wait 10-15 min. Best tater I ever had! Something about the coals giving the skin a charr, and the saltiness of the ash. Try it! They're so good 😊 Love, love, love your videos!

    My dad built our camper. It was a pop up made out of plywood. Pull out ends and the top raised up in the middle. So cool. Maybe you could put some sliding windows in the trailer. Also, screen houses are cheap and great for over your table. Plus great for playing cards or coloring or whatever if the weather turns bad. Dad also made a cabinet that fit on the end of the picnic tree able. The front of it folded down and it created a counter top area. It was like a narrow kitchen cabinet. The width of a plate. Then it folded up and kept critters out of our bread and foods that didn’t need to be refrigerated. She stocked it with everything we needed and the stuff stayed in there. Plates, and yes some paper 😂😂 and she got some second hand silver ware etc. so fun and awesome.

      Two reasons you didn't get to... First, it woulda been too dark to video. Second, it ended up getting too late and she didn't get it made! 😂 I was going to mention that in the video and I forgot. We made it in this video here though: th-cam.com/video/V7obwm_OTEc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pX4HZjohY8knCId3

      My great great grandpa invented the train hitch, my great grandpa turned an army truck into a tractor loader, and growing up it was my dad’s idea to use his cargo trailer for our family’s camping trips.. I guess I’ve got inventive genes 😊
