  • If your GPA and LSAT score were the only two factors on whether you'd be admitted to law school, we could replace Dean Z with an algorithm. But, of course, that's not the case and there's a lot more to the full story than those two numbers. In this episode, Dean Z looks at an old application where the student has good numbers, but the essays and letters of rec tell a different story.
You can leave questions in the comments below or email at Dean Z at law.jd.admissions@umich.edu and put A2Z Vlog in the subject.

For those of you who don't get the reference, Dr. Spaceman is the unethical doctor in 30 Rock who the main characters frequently go to when they need something unethical yet convenient that is medically related done for them. For example, getting access to non-FDA approved drugs, illegal drugs, or getting medical endorsements for dubious health products.

This video and the channel in general are super helpful. A real treasure for all applicants! Could you tell me, please, if you plan to make a video about analysing the applications of international students? I think this topic is not well covered on TH-cam and many students would be very interested to see the process from the inside. If you have already made such a video and I missed it, I would be very grateful for the link! Wish the best selection 2022-2023!)

The takeaway seems to be to not be a weird candidate who idolizes a very controversial extremist philosopher lol

I’m starting to prepare my personal statement and optional essays. I have gone through some incredible hardship throughout my high school and undergrad career. I’m worried that my essays are going to come off as though I’m looking for sympathy. Do you have any advice on how to navigate this?

No idea if this is helpful, but I’ve read that it’s useful to focus these essays on how what you’ve experienced has influenced your growth/development as a person. You can and should obviously explain what happened but the focus should be less on the events themselves and more on what transpired in the days, months, years etc. afterward. We all have experiences in our lives that shape us into who we are and hardships are no exception. By writing your essays with this focus in mind you can show the committee that you have a unique perspective informed by experiences that most people do not have to face

Dean Z usually skips the grammar on app reading episodes. Look for another grammar tip next week!

I don't know which republican needs to hear this, but Ayn Rand is not a personality trait
