    I've always thought that Yngwie's vibrato was one of the best aspects of his playing

  • @CaptainBlackadder75
    @CaptainBlackadder75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great advice as ever Elmo - vibrato is probably one of the most overlooked but essential techniques to master. Doesn’t matter how well you nail everything else in a piece - if your vibrato is off, it ruins everything.

    • @kipponi
      @kipponi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah nervous vibrato is so bad. Or irregular one.
      Yngwie has wide vibrato. Always same why?

    • @CaptainBlackadder75
      @CaptainBlackadder75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kipponi it’s almost operatic in its sound and wideness, like a soprano.
      But, crucially, it’s smooth and even, and that’s why it works.
      Definitely need to work on mine...

    Elmo this is an EXCELLENT video! I have been saying for a very long time that Yngwie is more than just a "Shredder." His bends are impeccable. They're not only perfectly executed but always perfectly placed. I'm so happy to know that there's someone else out there who realizes this! 🎸🤘🤩🤘🎸

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on. That's what makes some other shredders impossible to listen to for me. They might be technical and all, but their bends and vibrato do nothing for me, or worse :D

  • @ShredHeads

    Good video Elmo, Yngwie's style is hard to replicate few people can do it well. I would add that most people don't play with Yngwie's aggression and power.

    Lars got the idea for that wide vibrato from Uli Roth ( the first two albums after Scorpions , Earthquake etc)...also he took Uli's four note pattern and just sped it up and everybody thinks Yngwie invented that sequence , he didn't - Uli did. Yngwie is genius no doubt , but give credit where credit is due

    I just couldn't get the thumb where I wanted with various Fender or Gibson necks I owned as much as I wanted to like those guitars. The PRS Wide Fat neck (and 25" scale length) on my current 2008 SE SC seems to do it just right for me and my thumb is where it should be all the time for bends and vibratos and it makes all the difference. I drool over other guitars all the time, but I have to remind myself it took a good part of my life to find a neck I liked.

    Hi..E, good stuff as always! Is there really a place for step and 1/2 bends? Why reverb when you can do vibrato? It it just to fill empty space when you play slower? Bye

    Hi Elmo, great video. I wanted to get your advice on something. I’m ordering a custom scalloped strat neck and am trying to decide between putting 6100 fret wire or 6000 wire (the super-jumbo ones Yngwie uses). Do you have any experience with these frets on a scalloped neck and can you recommend one over the other? Does it even make a different in feel when using a scalloped neck with 6100 vs 6000?

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Not sure about that tbh. If you have scallops, it shouldn't be that big of a difference.

    That's funny because if drives me nhts too. You have to use your ear and youd thumb has to be as you pointed out. You also have to land correctly with the note, and not almost, and not over bend. I hate, and absolutely cringe watching people not bend correctly, or watch them just slide down to the note instead of bending to the note. Great lesson. I missed the scales lesson. Must look for it. Great lesson sir. God that guitar and amp sound great.
    May I ask the speed of your delay in the loop?
    Thanks so much for sharing this kind sir. Hope all is well. Be safe my friend!

    I would think most guys who watch this can play Id guess as well or almost as well I can play & we in general can do alot of this stuff But I found you yesterday & I do Yngwie really well BUT Not Like You Do! I hope to pickup these parts of Malmsteen I feel as tho Im missing which in my case is a smoothness he has I feel im missing BUT You Hav-it! I also think ur exceptional..I was touring player in afew Id say median sized bands Or the warm-up band on Ozzy or Slayer tour, So it was something but that explains the day job stuff🤣.I just wanted to say aft 1st day watching you & Now my 2nd day, I think you should put Alittle More Playing into the video as opposed to so much theory Because Im looking to fix myself & watching you do the playing is 10xs more helpful then hearing abt theory for 2/3rds of 14min video..I hope you Don't Think Im Being A Dick because im not trying 2b mostly because Ur Fuckin Great! Knowing most folks around here when I Did go play when I was home think Im pretty great But I Know The Difference between guy like Me & You, & Uve got me beat because you really do know wtf ur doing & Im the Dick-Off who tries to figure it out by ear, So never quite there But You Actually Know Buy This Is Abt Playing which is why from my perspective more playing & less threoy🎸😁

    Ha! Bah humbug! To me bends and vibrato's were the first thing I learned on lead guitar-even before scales etc. From where I'm looking anyone who can't do those things that make electric guitar fluid, is not in the ball park of actually playing at all(in lead), like someone playing without knowing any chords (for rhythm guitar).Before I played any electric guitar, I noticed the bending of George Harrison, and of Eric Clapton, and along with Albert King, I realised that some guitarists didn't do any of that stuff, making me wonder why they chose to play guitar, when obviously piano would suit them better. The whole point of all modern rock guitar, is that you can make it convey more emotion by imitating the human voice- swooping , dipping , and soaring into a windswept jet stream like a silk scarf or cape waving as if stuck out of a car window.Whatever.... I feel strongly that as we used to say back in the seventies, so and so has "no feel"! The difference between ok players and the cream of the crop is not the musical structures that are played, but devil is in the details-little things like varying the note picking from soft to hard, dynamics like using a bend into a note to bring out a different tone..and Vibrato!..and Bending ! Most amateurs are doing the exact same notes and phrases, but your good players are making it sound sharper and sweeter, with the polish and craftsmanship of a quality sound.If you are a philosopher and covey some cutting edge brilliant content but your voice or pronunciation is distracting from the music then you are no better than a brilliant doctor whose handwriting on a prescription note is illegible , and causes the wrong medication! If you expect people to listen to you play, the actual sound and tone should not be so bad as to prevent listeners from hearing your hippest riffs.Segovia used to say that when live , one should not indulge in pulling faces or jerky body movements that could mask the content of your performance by distracting or repelling people..that's extreme, but I agree with his point.The way you play matters as much(even more) than what you play and those without all those expressive and aesthetic techniques like bends and vibrato should not play in front of people until they've learned how...unless they are so devoid of artistic sensitivity that they don't even hear these things(if so, they clearly should be a software engineer or an accountant, rather than a musician) Although I know someone who is a wonderfull saxophone player, but is also an accountant-but hopefully you get my drift.

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I do actually. You start with "Bah Humbug", but then go on to seemingly agree with me. Not sure what you're getting at.

    • @chrisgmurray3622
      @chrisgmurray3622 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for any confusion,I do agree with you -my " bah humbug Wass a clumsy attempt at self deprecating humour, as if I were a grumpy old man(which I probably am) but I'm grateful you brought up the issue of people who play with no natural expression; this to me is what lack of vibrato or good bending is is only the tip of the iceberg of many of the aesthetic ways of playing with taste.This is opinion, not an exact science, but to me subtlety, and taste are prerequisite to structural technique.

      Define best? I mean he is brilliant, an incredible talent, but he's an artist, so best doesn't mean the same as it does in sports. Though I guess there is an athletic comparison considering the way they need to be practicing the boring stuff for hours to get that ability.
