Total Chaos! 🇰🇪 Nairobi Kenya, Maasai Market

  • Any 🇺🇸 American visiting Kenya MUST spend a couple hours touring the Maasai Market. To be clear, it might be overwhelming. I had to bolt out once it became too much for me.
Warning, be sure to negotiate ALL prices by a significant amount. I try but I'm not too good as yet with my negotiating skills. I think American prices which is mistake #1. However, my motto is that if I'm having a great time and the price isn't outrageous then I have no issue promoting these local vendors even if it means I'm overpaying by Kenyan standards.
🇺🇸 American in 🇰🇪 Kenya series continues.

The Maasai market is a rite of passage. You'll know you're a local when you learn to navigate it without feeling bothered.

Nothing unusual about this. Aggressive vendors is part and parcel of international travel. The reason they persisted with you is because they sense weakness in you.

I am Kenyan but live abroad, visiting this market can be overwhelming I have to bring a local because the moment I open my mouth my price doubles you are a brave soul.

Hi Richard, as Local Kenyan I prefer buying all those items from their supplies _a market called Kariokor market: they buy things there and take them to Masai market plus you'll get everything at a better price

I'm a Kenyan and admit that it can be very weird in Maasai market. Soon tourist will start to avoid that place because of the chaos. It needs to be controlled asap. Before it was quite chill and nice place to be. Go there will a local. 🙂

It happens to us locals as well. The annoying kids who never leave you alone and vendors. Just ignore them completely if you don't want to entertain them. Even the NO is an invite for conversation lol

Don't leave before you visit spinner's web. It's like maasai market but with more variety and in a high end neighbourhood so it's a little quiet. Especially during the week.
