My 5.4 3v f-150 was in two accidents and is still running strong with 255k. These are VERY underrated, lowballers love these trucks. If you want to avoid timing problems, change oil every 5k with 5w-30, as for the spark plus just change them when the engine is HOT, they pop out easy. If you take care of these trucks, they will take care of you.
I've had my 2007 F-150 FX4 since I bought it new. I have 117,000 miles on it. I did have the notorious spark plugs changed but that's it. I do synthetic 5-30 Pennzoil (6) quarts then (1) Synthetic Kicks Oil stabalizer. It runs quip and smooth like the first day. Love my truck.
I still have my ‘09 5.4 3V in a FX4 Luxury Edition S/crew which runs as quietly and reliably as the day I drove it off the lot well over 14 years ago. Proper maintenance seems to be the key at least with the later run 5.4 3V’s. I’ve only used Motorcraft parts and oil filters on it from day 1 and always used high quality motor oil changed regularly. Since 2009 my engine problems have been 1. a/c pump clutch went out (2013) 2. passenger side exhaust manifold bolt(s) broke (2018) 3. had to replace both VCT solenoids (2022). Also just normal maintenance wise I’ve replaced the plugs, brakes/rotors and also fuel injectors and all new idler pulleys/ belt last year just because I thought it was a good idea. Additionally every fluid throughout the truck has been changed out twice now using Amsoil. I haven’t messed with the truck, it’s completely stock except for a MBRP car back exhaust. I just did a long multi day road trip and averaged slightly over 20 mpg or 11.6 l/100 kms with the 5.4. I’ll take that fuel economy any day on a V-8 full size truck.
Nice I have the same truck as well. 09 fx4 s crew. I am currently sitting at 286k I change my oil religiously every 3k full synthetic and motorcraft filter. Planning on changing the vcts soon but other than usual maintenance issues it's been a great truck. My biggest complaint is the rust especially with me living in new jersey. Rockers and cab corners.
My 2010 5.4 is currently sitting at 296,000 miles original engine and transmission. Always used 5w20 full synthetic changed every 4k miles. Transmission filter pan drop every 30k. Engine is still silent and smooth as is the transmission. Never touched the timing chain. I don't subscribe to the thicker oil is better theory. Maintenance is the key. I stuck with what Ford recommended and it has served me well.
I've owned 2 2005 5.4 3v and 2 2010 5.4 3v. The 2005s one was sold with 240k miles and the new owner still no issues. The other had VCT solenoids problems, but it was only because the person we sold it to could not afford Motor Craft parts. First 2010 5.4 3v bought with 190k miles and sold at 220k miles. No issues. Second 2010 5.4 3v bought at 50k miles and still currently driving. I always use Shell Gasoline. Always use Shell Rotella Gas Truck (Red Bottle) Engine oil changed at 5k Always use Motor Craft parts The 5.4 3v like all other engines will have lemons and failures. But I am confident that with high quality maintenance and parts, your issues would never be out of the ordinary.
My GF had a 2002 Expedition with the 2v. Except for a oil pressure sending unit it was a reliable engine. I acquired it from her with 150k miles on it and drove it for another 50k miles and it was still going strong. Sold it in 2017 as it was starting to have some problems and I wanted to get a car which was a little smaller and got better gas mileage. As a whole I had a positive experience with it.
The two valve Triton is considered the best engine Ford ever produced, followed immediately by the worst engine Ford ever produced... The three valve Triton.
I would rather change out the timing chain set instead of replace/machine heads because a plug blew out. The timing chain is right in the front of the engine and easy to relatively easy to replace.....compared with cylinder head work.
@scotishpopcorn Replace or machine the heads🤣🤣🤣 You just tap new threads, there are kits for it and it's not hard at all. And once that chain on the 3 valve makes noise, the damage is done. And then when the plugs get stuck in the 3 valve, it's nasty, even with the kits they make for that.
Ford tech, here, I drive an '06 F-150 with the 3V 5.4; a lot of these problems come from extended oil changes, mostly on work trucks that spend a lot of time idling on the side of the road, i.e. more hours than miles, but they still change the oil based on miles. Basically, anything with VVT is going to be more sensitive to oil changes.
This engine does have timing issues, however, Ford has addressed those issues with updated parts that will no only fix the timing issues, but makes for one very reliable engine. Mine is a 2008 with 202000 with all new timing components installed and the engine is super quiet now
You should have gone further to identify the culprit of the timing chain issues. The plastic tensioners with the angel hair pasta sized gasket that blows out and releases all tension when the motor is off. This causes the chains to slap and break the guides and gouge the timing cover. Cast iron tensioners will solve that problem permanently. Might as well install a Melling hi-po oil pump with the new timing set. NGK COP's and Iridium plugs work wonders on this engine.
I have the 5.4 3v..I did the timing job. Phasers, chain, guides, tensioner, oil pump, and all rollers. Water pump because I was in there. I also did the spark plugs. .110k miles. It's runs strong. Looking forward to another 100k.
@MichaelWinters-z7i I did the work myself...I have other vehicles. So I took my time doing the work. I kept the truck in the garage and worked over a few weekends..but your quote is pretty good. Just make sure that there is no play or movement with the crank. If you can use a pry bar to apply some force on the pulley then your good to go with the work. But if you have movement, it is no good. It's not worth it. Just get s new engine..I also live in SoCal. South Pasadena. 👍🍻
I bought 2005 Navigator in 2018 with 120K miles on it. On 150K I did big maintenance with all new sealings, fluids, new oil pump etc. Previous owner replaced timing chain on 100K miles, but he didn't replace phasers (I didn't know about it). Chain was looking good, so I didn't change timing kit. 3 days after maintenance one of the phasers fell to pieces. I replaced my engine with another triton 5.4 from 2009 F150 with declared mileage under 100K. Now my Navigator has 450K+ on the dash and it's still running, without any serious problems.
Best engine ever. I have a 2010 5.4L with 216,000 miles on it and she's still kicking. Yes 216,000 miles. I'm going to try to stretch it to 300,000. Frequent oil changes. New timing chains, Phasers and guides.
I knew about the issues before I bought a 2008 Expedition, checking the date on the block for the updated heads. I saved up for the timing job (chains, guides, followers, better oil pump) and in the 200K miles. This is VVT and it allows you more power range, excellent towing, and 25mpg on the highway. A lot of modern engines require timing jobs . . . goes with the technology.
I've seen the 3v engines with over 300k miles. You have to stay on top of the oil changes, though. I change the oil in my 2012 Expedition every 2500 miles with Motorcraft 5w30 full synthetic and a Motorcraft filter. I only drive it 5k miles a year.
I have an '02 Expedition XLT with a 5.4 2V. Bought it in 2018 with 197k on it, now it has 209k. It doesn't see the highway much and doesn't get many miles but 90% of the time it's pulling 4,000lbs of trailer and equipment through really hot summer days. Started and stopped up to 20 times a day. Stop and go at low speeds. The worst kind of wear and tear for an engine. That being said, the only issues I've had with my engine is the intake manifold cracking and launching plastic into the cooling system. I run full synthetic 5w-30 in it with 2 ounces of Lucas to keep the surfaces bronzed and cushioned. Dumping the factory mufflers and installing a 40$ Thrush aluminum muffler with a 25hp tune did wonders for this engine for pulling and staying cooler. Most dependable engine I've ever owned. Surprised you did not mention the intake manifolds. Every parts store in my little town keeps 4 of them on the shelf because it's such a common failure. Luckily it is an easy fix.
I've got a 2v 5.4 triton in my 2000 Eddie Bauer expedition. bought it used and have no clue if the spark plug issue has been addressed, but I've had it for a few years now and it has 315k miles on it with no issues. so I can't complain. 😂
On the 2 valve, if you install the OEM Ford plugs dry at 25 lb. torque, they will never blow out. The problem was that the plugs were installed too loose. Exhaust gases build up on the threads and eventually the plugs work there way out. There is no reason why the timing chains won't last at least 150K with regular oil changes.
Using some antiseize will help too. Regular oil changes and proper maintenance is definitely the key here, it always goes a long way in added reliability.
Over tightening the plugs can fatigue the threads, allowing them to bow out with the threads. It is similar to tightening a bolt enough to strip the threads.
@@carlanderson7091 Not. Ford recommends now 23-25. Heads cannot be "fatigued". If that were the case no fasteners would last. 25 lbs is quite low in the torque spectrum. Under torquing the spark plugs is the problem.
Got a misfire, was a spark plug. Changed them out and the ignition coils and then it was worse then before engine would bounce a lot during stops and in park? A day later the spark plug blew and melted had to go change them out again and the shop I took my Ford f150 2007 triton to said it's the fuel injector have you heard this working?
It's possible it's the injectors - sometimes swapping fresh plugs and coils in can unmask other problems. For example, a leaking injector might not cause misfires or pre-detonation with an old weak plug but then will once you put a fresh one in. Are the misfires specific to 1 cylinder or are you getting them on multiple? If it's just one then an injector might be the issue. If it is more than one cylinder then it could be something else like the ICM.
I have a 3v the only work iv had done on the motor was the timing chain spark plugs come out like a dream its ticking because of the old worn out springs and lifters and rockers but other than that it runs great 250k miles cant complain too much daily a hour an half commute everyday
04:04 - 5.4 Triton Common Problem #3 - Timing Chain The early years of the 3v were really noisy, that's just how it is. If you have that noise and your performance changes, then yes, take a look. But the timing chain issue can be solved with high quality engine oil changed religiously. The best 3v would be 2009-2010
Yepp, biggest threat to the timing chain (on just about any vehicle) is low quality or old and dirty oil. Frequent oil changes really are the biggest reliability factor.
Couldn't disagree with you more! My 02 F150 5.4 Triton currently has 602,000. Changed the spark plugs 1x. Changed oil myself every 5K. Std Motorcraft 10/30. Never touched engine. Just had rebuilt trans #2 at 590K. 2 alternators, 2 radiators.
I have a 2011 Ford Expedition with 250k and still runs well. I only use full synthetic 5W20 and change every 5-6k. These motors after 2009 seem to last longer with fewer issues. Maintenance I think is the biggest factor of longevity and reliability. I've had several for work duty and they've lasted past 150k with no main issues before being traded in. Exhaust manifold studs breaking and paint issues with the aluminum/steel combination body panals that show corrosion and eventually rot in poor climates. Sometimes the IWE system can malfunction causing them having to be replaced. But that's the trucks not the motors which as I said have had little issues when maintained properly.
I have a 2008 F150 5.4L V8, and I had to get the spark plugs replaced at 115k miles. There was a misfire which I mistook for a transmission slipping. However, the issue now is the ticking coming from the engine before it warms up. It just costs too much to fix it. Labor in WA state is expensive.
Great info and u explained it great thxs, when i start engine i hear rattling noise at front for 1 second when i start it but absolutley nothing when running very smooth so not sure what could be timming chain loose not sure
if you do a few upgrades its a really good engine... run 5-30 oil not 5-20, install the melling high volume oil pump, provides 25% more oil volume , install the new style cam followers ,.. and always use Ford OEM parts.....
It’s a great engine like anything else if you take care of it. Always use motorcraft products no excuse I have one with 208k miles never had any issues not even trans issues. always use synthetic oil and filters.
i have a 2008 5.4L f150 fx4 off road i just got right before i got my temps it has 141,047 miles, i have taken care of the spark plugs but i am concerned about the timing chain it has a very quit ticking noise near the front of the engine it sounds like it might be the timing chain but its too quiet i think do u have any other ways that i can tell if it’s the timing chain that’s going bad? my local shop said it’s 1500 just to check it so im not trying to actually have someone check it
Seems like every one of these Triton engines that roll in my shop is not running correctly, has major mechanical issues, and needs a long block, got a 4.6 in now has zero compression on cylinders 3-5 at 100k miles?
I beg to differ in the 4.6. It's well known as a legendary engine, alot like the older 302 and 351 Windsor engines from before, by reputation. Engines aren't perfect, and will have problems here and there. You work at a repair shop where, surprise, you fix things. So, EVERY vehicle that arrives there is there for a repair of one sort or another.
I wouldn't buy a used Ford truck with a 5.4 engine. I had a used 02 4.6 ford truck. The catalytic converter got stolen twice, and replaced the fuel pump. Then the transmission went bad. No more.
This is completely wrong. Spark blow out doesn't happen if the plugs are properly torqued to 20-25lbs. It's not an expensive fix if it does happen. The 2 valve doesn't have timing change problems if you just change your oil on a regular basis. They can last at least 150k. Most likely more.
Well assuming most owners properly torque their plugs and change their oil every 5,000 miles is probably optimistic. Not to say that these things still can't and don't happen to meticulously cared for vehicles.
Two valve, three valve, or four valve...which one are you talking about? You're talking about the three valve You're totally right it's dog shit, but the two valve... it's amazing. I'm working on the spark plug sleeve fix right now and that's the only problem I have ever had.

T - Nice! Sounds like you take great care of it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
04:04 - 5.4 Triton Common Problem #3 - Timing Chain
The early years of the 3v were really noisy, that's just how it is.
You for got about the exhaust manifolds breaking ,and their mounting studs
W - Thanks for the added insight.
He should've specified that its the 3 valve that had all of the major problems and premature failures. The 2 valves and 4 valves are very reliable.
B - Thanks for the insight.
No matter what Triton, it'll last longer than any bimmer.
Lol maybe valid but not a very reasonable comparison considering BMW doesn't make trucks, nor anything that competes with BMW in terms of performance.
@8020Media They make SUVs. And a Raptor and an x3 m40i have similar power and interior volume.
G - Ok.
@@8020Media Nice.
I have my 2001 f150 v8 triton 5.4 engine and it is the best thing about this truck

L - What are you disagreeing with? Just because you had a great experience with the 5.4, doesn't mean everyone does.
M - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. This will certainly help future viewers!
K - Sorry to hear this.. However, thanks for taking the time to share your experience.
@@8020Media No problem. These issues weren't as well documented when we got the truck in 2008. I appreciate your video!
K Thanks for the feedback!
Great info and u explained it great thxs, when i start engine i hear rattling noise at front for 1 second when i start it but absolutley nothing when running very smooth so not sure what could be timming chain loose not sure
J - Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like it could be timing chain rattle. How many miles do you have?
@@8020Media 230000 kms
I’d take the 5.4 3v over the Hemi with its lifter/cam issues any day
That’s a good point! We think both engines are solid.
Lmao not even close the hemi is way better as long as you aren't a ape that doesn't change the oil on time
if you do a few upgrades its a really good engine... run 5-30 oil not 5-20, install the melling high volume oil pump, provides 25% more oil volume , install the new style cam followers ,.. and always use Ford OEM parts.....
J - We completely agree. Thanks for adding this insight.
It’s a great engine like anything else if you take care of it. Always use motorcraft products no excuse I have one with 208k miles never had any issues not even trans issues. always use synthetic oil and filters.
B - Good point! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.
What does a timing chain replacement cost on average for a 2005 f150 king ranch?
E - It won't be cheap, but depending on where you go, you could be looking around $1,500. However with prices nowadays, it could be higher..
Good video
PB - Thanks for the feedback. We hope it helped!
i have a 2008 5.4L f150 fx4 off road i just got right before i got my temps it has 141,047 miles, i have taken care of the spark plugs but i am concerned about the timing chain it has a very quit ticking noise near the front of the engine it sounds like it might be the timing chain but its too quiet i think do u have any other ways that i can tell if it’s the timing chain that’s going bad? my local shop said it’s 1500 just to check it so im not trying to actually have someone check it
D - Are you having any drivability issues?
@@8020Media not really there is a weird delay in acceleration once it’s past like 60 but other than that no
D - It's possible.. but not worth $1,500.
@@8020Media should i try checking it myself or would that be to risky?
D - You could try to call other shops around to see what they're quoting? It's not really the easiest thing to check for.
Seems like every one of these Triton engines that roll in my shop is not running correctly, has major mechanical issues, and needs a long block, got a 4.6 in now has zero compression on cylinders 3-5 at 100k miles?
B - Wow, good to know. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I heard, issues were perfected for 09 & 10,
B - They were definitely updated, but perfected might be a stretch.
The 5.4 i have worked is the easyest v-8 engine to time out their. i use 15-40 oil with cast iron tensoniers, runs like a ape.

I wouldn't buy a used Ford truck with a 5.4 engine. I had a used 02 4.6 ford truck. The catalytic converter got stolen twice, and replaced the fuel pump. Then the transmission went bad. No more.

S - Haha, great reference. Thanks for sharing!
07 still going!!!
M - Nice! How many miles do you have on it?
@@8020Media 250000
This is completely wrong. Spark blow out doesn't happen if the plugs are properly torqued to 20-25lbs. It's not an expensive fix if it does happen. The 2 valve doesn't have timing change problems if you just change your oil on a regular basis. They can last at least 150k. Most likely more.
Well assuming most owners properly torque their plugs and change their oil every 5,000 miles is probably optimistic. Not to say that these things still can't and don't happen to meticulously cared for vehicles.
183 thousand on mine.
What's the deal with no injector pulse and good spark ? No power at the injector = bad ECU ? No ground pulse = bad crank sensor ?
M - Getting any engine codes?
@@8020Media no. But i do know that often when a crank sensor goes bad it won't store a code. I'm not sure how an ECM / PCM responds when it fails.
