I have owned my 2004 Ford F150 5.4 since March of 2019. It had 196,000 on it when I purchased it. It now has 236, 691 as of today. If you keep up on the maintanance on these engines, you will avoid A Lot of hassle and expenses in the future. I have a few things to add to the list of common problems and failures to be aware of with the 5.4 Triton. First off, DO NOT follow Ford's recommended service schedule when it comes to fluid change intervals. It is absolutely imperative that you change the oil every 3,000 miles. Not every 5,000, not every 7,000 and not every 10,000. It absolutely has to be done every 3,000. The reason for this is to avoid creating a situation to where you start having engine sludge build up inside the engine. All of the timing components are dependant upon the oil pressure being at the proper level in order for them to operate correctly. This includes the chain tensioners and cam phasers. If the oil isn't circulating unobstructed, the chain tensioners will not be able to extend the tensioner arms and therefore you will hear the Death Rattle at start up and soon you will also hear it at hot idle intermittenly. The cam phasers will also start to fail shortly after the chain tensioners do. When the phasers start to fail, it is always the left side (passenger side) that fails first. When you hear a slight ticking sound coming from the engines left side when the engine is at operating temp and idling, thats the cam phaser failing. If you hear a more pronounced knocking type sound constantly but your engine is running smooth, that will be one or more roller followers failing. The neddle bearings inside the stock roller followers fail due to lack of oil, and the lack of oil is due to the oi pressure being lower than its supposed to be. You usually have about 5,000 to 10,000 miles left to drive after hearing the knocking sound before the cam shaft finally kicks the failing roller follower out and grenades your engine. There are 24 roller follers in the 3v, so when you hear that loud and consistent knock, its time to take off the valve covers and front cover and change them out along with the entire timing set. Ford Motor Company has updated mostly all of the timing component parts that commonly fail in these engines, so I would purchase the updated parts through them. They aren't cheap buy amy means, but they are of the best quality and will last. If you buy aftermarket, you will be havin to do it all again in 10,000-20,000 miles. Also, the stock chain tensioners themselves have a weak gasket and when the gasket fails, and it will, usually before 100,000 miles, that starts a domino effect of timing component failures.
There are a few more issues to touch upon, but I already wrote a book here and I'm tired. I just wanted to cover the most expensive repairs and ugrades that will have to be addressed if you want to keep your 5.4 running strong, or at all.

A lot of that depends greatly on the quality of the oil being used, if you buy whatever random oil is on sale or always use the cheapest oil you can buy then yeah you'll need to change your oil more frequently

I bought a 2007 about 6 weeks ago. This truck was a one owner and is very clean. The owner changed the oil every 2500 miles, kept up on all services like clock work. Body is clean, and he had the underneath oiled every year to prevent rust. Has 70,000 miles and I'm hoping it will last me a long time.

70k miles? My 2005 F150 5.4 3v auto has 282k miles on it and it still runs and drives great. Doesn't leak or burn a drop of fluid or oil. Just keep your oil and fluids changed and it will last you another 200k miles. At some point you might need another transmission, and you will have timing chain issues. Sometimes the lifters/rockers will get play in them as well and will have to be replaced. Lastly, spark plugs can get stuck. Just get a mechanic to do this stuff for you. They're really not bad trucks.

I bought a 2005 F150 2WD 5.4 auto about a year ago for $2,800. It has 282k miles on it. New transmission, timing chain assembly and rear/front main seal. The truck is solid. No rust. Runs and drives great. Doesn't leak or burn a drop of fluid or oil. The bed is big enough to haul everything I need, and the extended cab is nice. I can haul 6 people in the truck. For the price, I couldn't have gotten a nicer truck.

So one of the major concerns for the Ford F150 series is rust developing on the bed rails and frame itself. I always check the bed rails and frame before buying any truck. If the bed rails are rusted out you have to remove the bed, then use a heating torch to cut the spot welds off the bed and remove the old rails. To remove the old rails, then weld new rails back on and bolt them in is a huge job. You’re talking 3,000 to 5,000 dollars at the mechanic shop. A little surface rust isn’t a huge concern on the frame, but if you can take a ball pean hammer to it and knock chunks of rust off than it’s not safe to put on a lift. The 4.6 liter and 5.4liter triton motors are good reliable motors, both the Single overhead cam and Dual camshaft are screamers. You really can’t go wrong with either one.

I have a 2005 F150 XLT Crew Cab with a 5.4 3v Triton. It had 86000 miles on it when I bought it. I had a problem with it Misfiring It just ran like Shaking and jerking at first when I would go between 45 and 50 but no engine light. After a while I started getting the engine light coming on and checked the code, Multiple Miss fires. So I changed the Spark plugs. It was the Original Plugs in it and I had 3 of them break off and I extracted them with the Lyle Tool Put Nickle anti seize on the medal part that would seize on the new plugs and they were the new type plugs motor craft put out after the recall. To make a long story short after changing out the plugs my truck ran like it was new. It ran better then when I first bought it. still going strong.

I got a 2005 FX4 with the 5.4L with 145k miles for $3000. He had 33s and rockstar rims on it too. There is a significant amount of frame rust and once it warms up again I plan to weld a little steel in there. However as is I'm sure it would last at least 2 or 3 years. Also I know all the bad things about this motor. I had an expedition with a 5.4 also. However this one runs so smooth and doesn't even have the slightest tick or tap. For $3000, I definitely got my money's worth.

I have had a couple. An 05 king ranch and it died at 160,000. I had sold it to a friend. It was in great connection. It developed a knock (timing guide wear). He didn’t fix it. Made it 10,000 miles then shelled the engine.
I currently have an 07 king ranch with 82,000 miles. I can hear a light knock just starting. It’s at idle only. Truck looks brand new. Interior still smells new. Can’t quite determine where it’s coming from. Going to taken in. Hopefully it’s nothing too bad.
If I were to buy an 04-08 again, I’d look for a high mileage very good condition truck. I’d then replace, motor and transmission (I like powertrain engines and transmission with the 7-year warranty plus they use all the latest oem parts, and all the bearings, brakes, rotors, callers, shocks, springs, motors mounts, transmission mounts, body mounts and there is a list of items on Fordtechmakuloco TH-cam site of items that should be replaced or checked.
For about $12,000 plus the price of the pickup, you then have a great looking pickup ready for 300,000+ miles of driving.

As soon as my house and shop are finished, I will have a full video going through a breakdown of all the essential parts for these engines! The melling HV oil pump is definitely a good update, I’ve seen all kinds of things that people swear the 5.4’s have issues, but I’ve had good luck with most stuff. Fordtechmakuloco is a guru on TH-cam with these engines as well if you need more content asap. He jokes that the 5.4’s have put his kids through college. The VCT solenoids are easy to change if your truck has a 04-07 engines, 08’s have a lot less room and most people will pull the valve covers, but I’ve also seen people make a homade rig to get the bolt out in the small space available

Started out with a 2007 F150 SCAB. Bought it with 53k miles. Always would go into diesel mode when I would go from highway driving to parking lot/drive thru driving. Always would pop it into N Rev it up and go back to drive. Never failed me. Until I got a 2300 tune up quote since local shops didn't want to touch these plugs or quoted double. One shop told me 100 dollars extra per broken plug they told me they've had all 8 break and or 1 break never had none break. Got 13g for trade bought it for 18k great price I thought. Some days I miss it.

Idk why people say the 5.4 is unreliable. I did have a 03 4x4 with a 5.4 I regret letting go of. A friend of mine has a 05 also with a 5.4 that has 160k miles running great. My truck has taken me all over the country Vegas, ohio, florida, Texas, NOLA. These engines arent bad but they arent perfect either. working on them can be a bitch sometimes but they are wonderful. I got a stock 2008 with 180k miles. Only had to replace some front suspension components and the rear calipers other than parts that ware out like roters and pads. I don't notice any smoke or oil spots on the driveway but I do have to add about a quart of oil between oil changes. Have some pretty decent amounts of rust above the real wheels(Kansas city) so that is par for the course around here. It's been a good truck but it only gets about 12 miles per gallon. I also have a heavy foot so that is probably to blame.

Man. I have a 2008 that I've had since 2010. I was was getting on the highway at Fielder and I/30 not far from Cowboy Stadium and it sounded like a mini bomb went off, then loud puttering sound. This was in 2019 and around 156,000 miles. Drove it back home and saw the damn spark plug just lying there on top of the motor. # 6 or#7 had blown out. My mechanic said "Yep, that's normal with this truck. They just blow out and can't figure out why." I put it back in and hadn't had a problem since. I check it from time to time just to see if it's loose. Few months later, I just went ahead and changed them all, but I have heard numerous people say that this happens. Now, I think I'm staring to hear that rattle you were talking about. You hear it for a second or two when you start up and the mechanic has mentioned it also.

The 2V (pre 04) 5.4’s were notorious for blowing plugs out. However it’s not nearly as common on the 3V’s. Most of the time the 3V’s will get plugs stuck in the motor. Ford went from one extreme to the other with them

The issues typically don’t lie within the engines, it’s more so the issue of people taking care of them. A lot of failures with these engines can be prevented/pushed off by proper maintenance intervals and inspection. I’ve seen several 3-400k original 5.4’s, but they’ve all been maintained on a 5k or less oil change cycle

Be careful with the tranny flushes! More times than not it can cause a failure if the fluid wasn’t regularly changed! The detergent from newer fluid can break up gunk build up and send it through the rest of the tranny! But who knows if that’s how it would turn out.
