- Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic) makes his first appearance in the show as the handsome, charming Croatian doctor, starting off as a "moonlighter" to cover for absent doctors.

Made them a big part of their first episodes instead of just slowly introducing them.

One thing I appreciated was that new characters didn't always join and leave in the first and last episode of each season, respectively.
I always loved seeing Luka interact with children. He’s so gentle and loving. The man has a heart of gold. The whole time I was like good lord I hope they’ll let him finally have a family again and low and behold here comes Abby then Joe. ♥️

I once had a doctor like Luka. Super nice guy. I was in the ER because I had been shot and I was high out of my mind on pain killers and he just sat down and talked to me while I recovered. One of the nurses later told me in that state I told him that he was hot af.

Despite the fact many women fell in love with Luca when he came on the series, I can bet many felt like he was just Doug ross with a foreign accent. Yet as we learn Luca Kovac is his own man with his own traits and as we found out his own past that was tragic. Granted he is handsome but it was made clear that no new character was meant to fill the shoes of another, that is the beauty of ER and why it lasted fifteen seasons, it gave each new character their own voice, variety and identity, the makers of ER success, one of many of course
They made a good choice to bring in Cleo at the same time as Luka to be the new Pediatrician so Luka wasn't filling the exact same doctor slot at the hospital as Doug.

They brought Goran in to replace Clooney as the resident dreamboat. When they brought him around to the production offices to introduce him, I thought he was a new producer, lol. My mouth dropped, he's absolutely gorgeous and so lovely.
Oh I loved him right away. Excellent character. As a LEGAL Immigrant myself I felt for him more than most.
This show is about 6 yrs older than me and here I am simping for Luka. Never heard of ER till today 😂

I'm currently watching _E. R._ , by the way and I _simply love_ it! This is such an exciting and interesting series with full of well written characters. 👍 My favourites are Luka (that's obvious 😇), Carter and Abby.

When I was a teenager (I can't believe I graduated 15 years ago...) all of my former (female) classmates used to have a crush on Carter. Well, I had a crush on Luka. 😄 (I think my taste was better. 😉)
By the way, I think Luka Kovač is a "typical byronic hero" - on one hand because of his appearance (as Abby said about him when they met for the first time: _"tall, dark, handsome and mysterious"_ 😇), on the other hand because of his past with full of tragedies...
And I _simply love_ the fact he and his (first) wife waited till their wedding night. I think it's beautiful! ❤ (They don't make men like him anymore... Every woman needs a man like Luka!)

I *loved* Luka Kovac! Hated what they did with the whole Kovac/Abby/Carter thing, and I wish to hell Susan had never left! E.R is one of my top ten all time favourite shows :D
I hated it at the time (mostly because it wasted Carter's character and turned both him and Abby into unlikeable douches) but in hindsight, we kind of got a beautiful circle with Abby and Luka's relationship. They got together before they were friends or ever really knew each other, then they sort of fell in love slowly over a period of years until they were both in the right place for each other. They were so messed up when they first met that they never could have stayed together. But then they ended up together, with a family neither of them thought they could have:D
I'm in the minority but I really didn't like Luka and Abby either, she's a good character but I just didn't like them together. I personally liked Luka and Sam.
I'm as old as the Lubby fandom but I was always a Lurol girl. I cried like a baby when Carol left to reunite with Ross.

I actually enjoyed that scenario - I thought it was very realistic, Carter getting in the way - and pushing Abby and Luka apart. It allowed Luka and Abby to become friends and find their way back to one another. If Luka didn't end up with Abby (which I am so happy they ended up together) I always wanted him and Sam together. I was upset that Sam and Luka broke up until they put him back with Abby.
I LOVE Luka's character. I also loved Sam/Luka. I can't help but feel that they tried to replace Luka with Tony Gates by also placing him with Sam as well.
Luka wasn’t happy with Sam he also wouldn’t let her in about anything. He also lowered his standards because he wanted a family again so badly and Sam wasn’t willing to have more children. Sam was way too immature for a man like Luka.

@@sadieyoung7397 I agree that Luka and Sam weren't a good match. Sam was immature. Because she never got over what Steve did to her when she was 15. She was too independent and had major commitment issues. That's part of the reason Alex didn't have a dad, because Sam kept pushing guys away. Because of her problems, Sam was never gonna have all the love and happiness that Abby found with Luka.
@@jadasims1914 Sam and Luka just didn't work that well. Sam had an almost grown son and didn't want to start over with a new baby. Her being with Tony worked with adding Sarah to her family since it was like a stepdaughter of sorts instead of having to start over at square one with a new baby.
@@joemckim1183 They didn't work out because Luka & Sam weren't a good match. Luka & Abby are soulmates with a strong connection. Alex was 9 when they got together, so he wasn't grown. In my opinion, Sam didn't want more kids because she never wanted Alex. She said it herself that she didn't want to have a kid the first time, and that she wanted her life back. But that was her fault for not getting an abortion. Sam chickened out when it was time to have the procedure. She went back to the clinic, but she was too far along to terminate. And it's great that the writers didn't make Sam have another kid. Because she was a s****y mom the first time. Tony & Sam were just playing house. They didn't want a family and weren't looking for anything serious/committed. And Sarah's not even Tony's kid. Her grandparents got custody of her. They just let her stay with Tony, because she was happier with him.

I remember something about someone criticising Luka for not knowing anything about loss before they learned that he lost his child and wife during the war. Anyone know more details?
Correction he lost his wife and children, IIRC he had a son and daughter.
he lost two children and a wife in a war in Croatia (Vukovar) in 1991 i think. then he left for the USA to work as a doctor.

years later, when Sam's son Alex starts coming around the ER, she told Luka "You don't know anything about raising kids!" or something like that, before she knew of his past.

The fact that they tried to make Luka and Carol a thing for a minute and that that maybe would have happened if Julianna hadn't left the show...scares me. I wish she hadn't left the show but if that's what it took for her to stay with Doug, i take it. I'll forever miss her but is much better not having her on the show and know she is happy with Doug, than have her and she and Luka are a together...sometimes things work for the best.

When Luka came on the show I didn’t want to like him because he was so damn handsome and sexy. I figure they would have him pursue Carol now that Doug had left, so I stopped watching Doug and Carol were my favorite couple. When I first started watching rerun of ER Abby was with Carter, and they did nothing for me so I stopped watching again. The next time I started watching, Abby was with Luka and their chemistry was so hot that I became hooked on them and started watching the show daily, although I stopped watching again when they left. Luka and Abby now top Doug and Carol as my favorite couple. Luka and Abby out beat any of the couples on the show.
