People talk about how Benton supported him, but it goes beyond that. Benton was the *first* to leap into action after listening to Carter's instructions, basically signaling the rest of the people there to follow suit. It really showed how much Benton trusted and admired his former student that he was willing to listen to him in such a crisis, as well as help get everyone else on board.

I think the point was the only senior doctors were two surgeons (Corday and Benton) who only come to the ER for specific things and also with their own patients they were looking after and a paediatrician (Doug) wo was dealing with a ventilated patient on dialysis, so not a surprise they didn't immediately think they should be in charge. As Weaver had collapsed and with no Mark - Carter realised it was only him and Del Amico as the remaining ER Doctors; he was the one with the most ER experience out of the two of them (Del Amico having been a paediatrician originally), so quite right that he took charge in the chain of command.

They picked a good plot device for this one; Purple Benzene is a nasty petrochemical, giving off nasty fumes that can put you down almost as fast as Ammonia. Awhile back, a barge full of Benzene ran aground in the Corpus Christi shipping channel and started leaking the stuff. They evacuated a 10,000 population center on an island. I caught a whiff of the stuff while bugging out, we misjudged the wind and it shifted, blowing it across our evacuation route. Nasty stuff.

This scene is not just an excellent demonstration of good leadership, but also good _followership._ Benton, despite being the senior doctor, defers to Carter and shushes people up so that they don't override his instructions, since Carter is clearly the person who knows the situation the best, and they need ONE voice to get things done, not a thousand voices arguing and blaming each other. It also shows the trust and respect all the other staffers have for each other, even for their junior members.
But funnily enough the moment that makes me go "HELL YEAH" the most is when Carter figures out they can move the critical patients to the cafeteria. It's such a simple, unorthodox, yet brilliant solution.

  • @Alligator81

People often think of the drama and romance aspects of this show, which it certainly has in abundance. But I tend to think of it as an action series.
There aren’t fist fights and car chases every week. What it does have is people stepping up in difficult circumstances trying to figure out how to save lives, sometimes without knowing what the problem is, and when time is usually working against them. Sometimes coming at great personal cost, which I think there are plenty of examples of throughout the series.

I liked when that nurse talked after Carter told everyone to shut up, Benton told her to quiet down and listen to him. And then proceeded to immediately follow his instructions.

Ah no, that’s Dr. Elizabeth Corday. She is a British Trauma Surgeon who moved to Chicago sponsored by the County General to gain experience in trauma surgery. In US residency programs have ambulance ride alongs so she was doing one of those, she’s not a medic.
