In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to the music of Avenged Sevenfold for only the 2nd time on the channel. Today, we're hearing their all-time most successful single, Hail to the King. This is the title track from their sixth album, and I very much enjoyed the song. It's a straight-ahead metal/rock tune with great guitar work and vocals. I hope you enjoy!

Portnoy took a break from Dream Theater to tour with Avenged when The Rev passed away. They toured extensively, as the album was well received and generated lots of buzz. After that long tour, DT wanted to continue the touring they'd paused when Portnoy filled in for A7X; he told them he needed time to rest, and they pushed him until he left the band. He wouldn't return to DT until only recently, a decade later.
At least, that's the best summary that my brain can recall from Portnoy's social media.

If you want to hear more of the iconic Rev drumming, I think Blinded in Chains off of their City of Evil record does a great job of showcasing that along with what the rest of the band can bring. A Little Piece of Heaven off of their self titled record is a lot of fun and a track I think you'll especially enjoy given your background.
Also have to recommend in The Stage off the record of the same name with Brooks Wackerman on the drums. Everything on the track is super technical and precise and shows how the whole group have become masters o their respective craft.
Always enjoy and look forward to these Doug, love and appreciate what you do!

"I wont see you tonight" 1&2 (Waking the fallen), "Strength of the world" (City of evil), or "A little piece of heaven" (Self titled) would be great choices to showcase The Rev's work with he band. Glad you're finally getting back to some A7X! As you mentioned yourself, this is a very straight ahead metal song, however, in my opinion, it doesn't define the band's sound at all. Most of their other work is much more sophisticated, unique and complex. I would definitely suggest listening to some of their earlier work, which is generally heavier, I would personally recommend Remenissions or Beast and the Harlot.
From the album Nightmare, 'Save Me' is a must!
I would suggest to eventually try their newest, Life is but a Dream as a whole. It is very unique and different from other music (very experimental), but it's a masterpiece! (I think you should get a taste of the different eras and sounds of the band before you tackle it tho!)
This band has so much more different and great music but suggesting it all would just be overwhelming.

This was their radio friendly album where they just wrote some catchy hooks sounding similar to bands who influenced them such as GnR and Metallica. An enjoyable listen but the least emphasis on highlighting the bands talent. Anything from City of Evil, nightmare, self titled or latest album ‘Life is but a dream’ would be fun to watch you react to. Mattel is my personal favourite from new album. Think cosmic would also be right up your street.

there is a lot to check out from this band, this band has 8 albums and in my opinion apart from the first one every one of them is solid, (first album was recorded when they were teens so you would understand that at that time they didn't really have their unique style and producing is also kinda trash on that album), depended on what sound you would like to hear from this band u can choose what album to check out, they started as metalcore band as time went by they had albums that were powerful metal kinda like new generation of iron maiden, that "Hail the the king" (2013) album was tribute to 80-90 rock metal band they grew up listening to, "The Stage" album (2016) was more of a progressive metal and their newest album is as experimental as it gets, they have all styles and sounds mixed up in that album. i would suggest starting from their second album "waking the fallen" and continuing in order to follow their progress as band and personally as musicians.

Loved seeing this. I suggest you do Save Me. Another one from their Nightmare album I think is super cool is Fiction. That song features some of The Revs demo vocals and has some really deep meaning. Also, heres another I recommend that not many people would: The Wicked End.

I wish this hit got not only the shedding but also a banging lead guitar break down too at the end of the track...

0:42 Small correction here. Afterlife is from their self-titled album not their debut album. Outside of that, another great reaction and video!
For me, the whole "Hail to the King" fell kind of flat for me as a long-term fan of the band. It definitely felt a little too derivative to me. On the other side of that, it really showcases their musical influences which might be good for someone getting into the band. Especially if you are into classic metal. Personally, I hope you can check out "Strength of the World", "The Wicked End", "Cosmic", "Exists" or "Save Me". Those are just a few of my personal favorites from them!

next focus from them should be their 2nd album: Waking the Fallen. Unholy confession and Chapter four are bangers! They also have a 2 part song in there too

Hey Doug! I am typing this comment to let you know that I thoroughly enjoy your videos (to put it another way: I make more sense of music when you're on my screen explaining it!) and you have been the main reason I switched from early romantic music and found new love in Progressive rock. You have my utmost respect for analyzing the complicated music from the likes of Yes, Genesis, PF, and others, and understand it all in your first listen! God knows I need someone, maybe a classmate who sees this music for what it actually is, and not just "noise". That being said, I noticed you have no videos analyzing one of the most important bands in history: King Crimson. If you see this comment and decide to look into them, I would recommend listening to Starless (their masterpiece) from their album Red.
    - Sincerely, anonymous fan

I highly suggest Bat Country from their early work. Nightmare and Buried Alive are also great songs.

A7X has such an eclectic mix of music from straight-up metal as you put it to operatic to some really experimental stuff. You should check out some of their covers including Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Another good straight up eminently singalong-like metal song is Carry On.

Please do Exist, from The Stage, or Cosmic, from Life is But a Dream..., to hear some of Brooks Wackerman's drumming with the band, which is just brilliant.
