I recently rescued a Ridgeback/Mastiff mix from a shelter. Strong, fast, friendly but protective when needed, smart, plus a great looking dog. He gets compliments anywhere we go.
Had a Ridgeback for 9 years until she passed away too soon. They are the ultimate family dog and only bark when they sense something is not right. One thing a prospective owner should consider is they don’t really mature from a behavior standpoint until about 18 months. So if you want to own this truly wonderful breed, please plan on some intensive training for awhile. After that they think they are lapdogs. One other point, they are hounds and their instinct is to chase. One morning I was shaving and my wife was leaving for work. She called me to tell me out Ridgeback had jumped the fence and was chasing the neighbors horse! I extracted her from the situation, but things like this can happen. All in all I feel she was the best breed that was ever part of our family.
I have/ have had both breeds at the same time. Both have their great and not so great qualities, but each are amazing breeds. Rhodesian ridgebacks are guard dogs who don't like to be far away from you and are athletic couch potatoes (if that makes sense😂). They love to accompany you on your runs, but they also know how to lay back and relax. They can be a bit stubborn, but if you have food there is nothing they won't do. A bit shy around strangers, but when properly socialized they do just fine. Vizslas love any type of exercise and will never say no to going on runs, bike rides, hunting trips, etc. All they need 20 minute nap before they are ready for the next adventure. They can be distracted very easily, and when off leash, they roam much farther than the ridgebacks. They love going to places like the dog park, and my current vizsla adores any person she runs across. I absolutely love both breeds, and their short, low-matinence coats are a nice bonus☺
I got the best of both worlds. My boy is 5 years old now and I rescued him at around 5 weeks old. I had to bottle feed him, he was soo small. I was told he was a lab mix, but had him tested and he turned out to be a ridgeback/vizsla mix. He looks more vizsla but has the identifiable dark ridge. Smartest most loving dog I’ve ever had and would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to him.
My viszla has an upward turning tail when she is really excited! She can also outrun traffic with ease!the first 12 months were very interesting. I will NEVER underestimate the POWER of visla's! zooming little shit she is! but i adore her like a kid!
