I agree! Luke realizes that he taken a walk down the dark side and renounced it before it corrupted him. Throwing the light saber away is the only way he could prove to himself that he was a Jedi Knight who embraces compassion and rejects evil. A beautiful moment!
If only Obi-wan and Yoda had warned Luke about Emperor Sidious firing lightning bolts from his fingers, Luke would never have thrown his lightsaber away.
I remember seeing The Return of The Jedi in the movie theaters back in 1983. Since then I’ve probably seen it at least maybe …a thousand times. I always believed he threw away his lightsaber because of the mistake he made on Dagobah with his trial in the cave. Master Yoda requested him not to bring his lightsaber, but he did it anyways and wound up killing the image of Vader only later when the face mask blew up he saw his head behind the mask. That was dire warning to Luke not to kill him or else he would end up following his father’s failure. He saw through Palpatine’s manipulation tactics and wasn’t going to allow him to trick him like Anakin did. At that moment a Jedi he became and Palpatine was in fear. He hadn’t foreseen this. Prior to this Palpatine’s force vision into the future was cut off by The Force. He was very angry about it and believed it meant he would be defeated and destroyed. Vader knew Palpatine wasn’t able to see into the future but didn’t understand what that meant. Luke basically did the same move Palpatine used to pull Anakin to the Dark Side, only he pulled him back to The Light. He felt the good in him and gambled that Anakin would redeem himself and defeat Palpatine.
Before watching this video, I already know what will be explained. As you explained it Luke looked at Vaders injured hand, and then looking at his robotic hand. Luke realized he has become the thing he hates & by after realizing it, he tossed his lightsaber aside. Proving to Palpatine that he is a Jedi, and he wouldn’t harm an unarmed foe. But great dive to show that Luke didn’t just hate Vader or the emperor, but the darkness that surrounds them. Luke does what any Jedi would have done, they keep things at peace and protect organic life.
it's also a symbolic gesture. Sideous had Lukes lightsaber. Luke grabbed it with the force and swung it in anger. Throwing it away like that, shows Sideous that Luke is no longer interested in that. HE had no intention of using the lightaber on Sideous anymore.
First. Either way. I love the premise of this video. We don't really get a look into the heads of many characters as events happen unless you read the novelization. Thanks for making this video and being will to give a sort of a deep dive in Luke's mind.
Such a powerful moment and in this moment, I’m pretty sure Luke knew that his sacrifice here would allow Vader to return to the light. Luke knew he would be killed by Palpatine by letting go of his weaponry and he did it anyways because he knew that his father would save him and his conflict would haunt him no longer. He freed his father and in doing so, was the catalyst to destroying the Sith as bittersweet as it is. Luke truly was like Padmè in this moment, doing what is right and not bending to evil and Vader saw this and oh my gosh the prequel trilogy and its era makes that scene so much more impactful when you ponder on what Vader is thinking in that moment.
Even though many dislike the movie, I think the scene is beautifully mirrored in TLJ, both when he refuses Rey’s request at the beginning of the movie, and later during the flashback of him standing over Ben Solo. Once again he is for a brief moment ready to do whatever it takes to protect the ones he love, and then takes a look at his cybernetic hand and his sword, and he realises how close to the edge he has truly come.
I respect Luke for doing what he did in this moment. And besides he didn't know what the Emperor would do next. He just wanted to show he had become a true Jedi.
Cool intro and video brother 🤘🏻I do wish Lucas would have stuck to the original ending of this movie though! Luke could have fought Leia for another movie or two..Team Darkside!
In my imagination, even though Luke discarded his saber after being tempted by the Emperor to finish off his father, he still retrieved it while he was in the act of trying to carry his father to the imperial shuttle they arrived aboard the Death Star on. He only threw it aside in that moment as a symbol that he wasn’t going to given to the Emperor.
Confronting the emperor for good reasoning not using lethal weapon would scar for whole life so confronting palpatine as palpatine was in raged like refuse to join the darkside he use his force lighting to feel the pain and suffering
I always assumed that Luke threw it away because he thought the fight was already over. We now know how powerful the emperor is but from Luke’s perspective he just looked like a defenseless, unarmed, old man.
In my eyes when Luke threw away his saber and announced himself as a jedi knight he did exactly what Yoda warned him about. He severely underestimated the powers of the Emperor and that almost cost him his life.
Yeah, I Sorta feel like the people who say "Luke shouldn't have thrown his Saber away" really miss the point of the scene. It was basically Luke saying "FU" to the Palpatine and the Darkside. The lightsaber was, at that point, a trap for Luke as if he had kept it, he would of have still been playing Palpatine's game,no matter what intent or desire Luke had at that point By tossing it, Luke was saying that he was 100% DONE playing this game, and by declaring himself a Jedi,Luke pretty much did the one thing that not even Yoda,Obi-Wan or Padme could do. Make Palpatine play by HIS rules and game. Plus, with the novelizations loosely canon,Luke was still able to deflect The force lighting for a few seconds anyways,it's just Luke wasn't a master yet and it's Fricken Palpatine.
This is a great scene… I usually check out the ending of return of the Jedi regularly my girlfriend says I watch to much Star Wars lol but I always say any day is a great day to set back and watch some Star Wars
im not going to say TLJ was great or even good but i do think that Luke always knew that being a jedi wasnt about the blade I genuinly think he might react that way if someone handed him a blade and expected him to kill his nephew with it.
I still see this as a logical fallacy. Being a peacekeeper is different from being a pacifist. Being a peacekeeper would be to turn off the saber and keeping it on his belt ready for defense. The position he put himself in was a pacifist which made him defenseless. Luke's approach on this implies a Jedi can never fight which is ridiculous and renders them useless in the face of a mass murdering tyrant who is attempting universal domination. This is an area that the prequels did a better job with detailing rules not to kill an unarmed foe and never to do so with hatred.
Hello First time on your channel It was informative and interesting 🤔 In under 4 minutes Even better lol But my main point of agreeing with you Is how fighting Palpatine could've led into his turn to the Darkseid Even in victory And amongst all of the reasons I dislike the Sequel trilogy is the disrespect they held for the character of Luke Especially the bullshit Somehow Palpatine returned Because it diminished Luke and his father's redemption
Luke could have used his Lightsader to block force lighting. But I can understand why Luke did what he did. Also maybe Luke wanted to see what his Farther would do. Would stay with The Dark side or would he come back to the Light. Luke hope was to save his Farther.

That Holocron animation is MINT! Keep it Retney, you're killing it. 🔥
He didn't become a knight... He became Master Skywalker. A master of himself. At that moment, he could have lifted thor's hammer.
He didn't become a Jedi Master until years later in both Legends and Canon!
If only Obi-wan and Yoda had warned Luke about Emperor Sidious firing lightning bolts from his fingers, Luke would never have thrown his lightsaber away.

It's him fully understanding the events in the cave during ESB

I really love the part where palpatine knights him jedi after renouncing the darkness hence "so be jedi"

Even as a kid I always felt that way about this scene.
I respect Luke for doing what he did in this moment. And besides he didn't know what the Emperor would do next. He just wanted to show he had become a true Jedi.
The Emperor is literally the dark side.
Cool intro and video brother 🤘🏻I do wish Lucas would have stuck to the original ending of this movie though! Luke could have fought Leia for another movie or two..Team Darkside!
if he had struck palps down his journey to the dark side would be complete
I love a happy ending 💜

I’ve seen this and understood what it meant in the first few times I saw it. Very good

Also these videos that this guy makes are pretty impressive

Took a Sith to name a Jedi a Jedi

Imagine if mace windu refused to kill palpatien would anikin supported mace windu and fight against the emperor
Darth plagies needs to be next movie and by the book
Better die a Jedi than succumbing to the dark side.
And that detail almost cost him his life... Beautiful and symbolic but not a great plan after all.
Makes perfect sense 👍
This is why this is the best one of the original trilogy because its payoff and the growth and maturity of all the characters especially Luke
good one, the opposite of what his father did.
all of that should be mad obvious
the Real question is
how did his lightsaber end up back on his hip later when he's on Endor?!🤔
im not going to say TLJ was great or even good but i do think that Luke always knew that being a jedi wasnt about the blade

ffs lose the title screen, your channel used to be watchable
An animated intro bothers you that much? Its very common.
It’s only 14 seconds.
It's not even that long relax
I don't agree with that. It's a intro to his video what's the big deal?
Man theres some real unhinged people on the internet. Imagine getting angry over an animated 10 second intro
