Lauren, a fun fact for you! The Lane Cedar Chests have a SERIAL NUMBER on the bottom. When you REVERSE the numbers it gives you the Month, Day, and Year that the chest was made. So, for yours the Number is 851130 in reverse is 03/11/58. This beautifully updated piece’s birthday is March 11, 1958! So cool! In the 1970s, I received my Grandmother’s Hope Chest as a graduation gift. Its Birthday was March 28, 1944! LOVE that you brought this piece backed to life! It looks brand new! B~}
@AuntieBrennie, Thank you for posting the information about the serial number when reversed is the date the chest was made! My Dad bought a Lane Cedar Chest for me when I was a teenager, I’m now 79. It’s always been in a bedroom and is in perfect condition. I can’t wait to see when it was made.
Sorry Loren, I do love your videos. I do have to make a suggestion, perhaps a chop saw safety course, you put your safety glasses on and said "safety first" But I watched and cringed several times as you made several unsafe (Very unsafe) moves with the drop saw. Cross arm is how to lose an arm and those little engravings that mark the no go area on two occasions you held a short piece while cutting.... Kickback is bad enough but it can take a finger with it, if in the cut area. To cut the angle on your short legs, either do it by hand saw using a vice to hold the piece steady. Or use a jig on a table saw if you have one..... Please don't feel offended, I used to teach Ocupational health and safety and have seen many bad results from chop saw accidents...... Don't want to see you hurt.
Thank for your safety comments. I cringed when the clamp came out… I’ve heard tragedies after people thought they had something clamped that wasn’t… and your concerns were on point. No one wants Lauren hurt. We care❤
My husband and i restored a similar piece years ago. We got our sanders out and sanded off all of the veneer. The trunk itself was solid cedar. The lid was not. My husband went to home depot and got cedar closet panels and attached it to the lid. We sealed it and it became my neighbor's most cherished piece.
Wow, kid! I have watched you from the beginning, and have seen your skill set skyrocket. You are an amazing teacher and create beautiful updated furniture. Thank you so much for your videos. ❤️2U
This is Lorraine I know you are a very busy young lady and it's so good to be busy I am so proud of you for not drinking not doing drugs and not going to jail for going to college for being a teacher and doing furniture flipping you have made something special of your life you are very special young lady be proud of yourself I'm sure your parents and your rest of your family are very proud of you keep up the good furniture flipping keep up the good life you're having I hope you take a vacation once in a while and take a break from everything
I love that color! The tutorial on the base is fantastic, thank you. I really want to learn how to make them, but I'm super intimidated. Your video is very thorough, and I appreciate that so much. It gives me more confidence to give it a try.
I have that exact cedar chest! And I painted it years and years ago before I knew anything. Used latex wall paint. It definitely needs a redo! Yours is lovely!
Beautiful transformation ! Love the new base. I laughed when I saw the cobwebs under the base I know you clean your pieces really well but sometimes I miss the base too!
You are a natural born teacher! I have always been told the same. You make all your lessons simple to understand! I am 63. It’s hard for me to understand some things. Thank you young lady! From this old lady!
Another Beautiful job . Nice color and I like the neutral base. Have a nice day and take care . Have been watching your videos for a while now and always enjoy seeing your finished work. 😊
Wow, Love this Lane Hope Chest!! You did a wonderful job, & I learn so much from your videos!! I'm a wanna be flipper, and I love to learn how to begin & the wonderful tips & tools!!
Beautiful job Lauren! Excellent choice of paint and stain colors! I have a friend who wants me to strip her mom’s cedar chest. It’s a little intimidating because it’s my first one. That is, my first job of refinishing anything!!! Thanks for all your knowledge and skill in making this easier for me. I appreciate your educational approach to flipping furniture.
I typically use fabric softener straight out of the bottle for cleaning my brushes which works really well and conditions the bristles at the same time. I’m going to try the paintbrush cleaning tool as well. Thanks for the tip.
This is Lorraine from Corning New York I watch your videos almost every day on my cell phone thank you for having these videos you're a kind loving hard-working young lady and I am so proud of what you accomplished in your life I love all the furniture you make over there is not one that I don't like so far and I don't think I will not like any of them think I will keep liking them I like when you show the before and after product and I like how you explain how many hours you've worked and what you're charging for each hour you've worked and all the products you've used and what you're doing to the product step by step you are a good teacher at furniture flipping I'm glad you found something you like and that could pay off your student loan I hope you and your boyfriend are doing well may God bless you both and may God keep you safe and warm and healthy God bless you both I love you both God bless you both and Happy Thanksgiving to you both
An for some of you that love to refinish furniture too cleaning the brushes with that comb tool is very helpful at getting out all the the paint. I lost mine somewhere and resorted to using a wire brush I had and that did a pretty good job too.
Hi Lauren! I could be wrong, but I think the blade that you have in your miter saw is more of a rough cut blade. The teeth look to be quite far apart. For cutting the pieces for the base, I think you would want a fine cut blade where the teeth are closer together.
I am SOOOOO glad you went over cleaning your brushes and your process!! Although I assumed it wasn't hard.... I am a newbie and wasn't sure how to keep my brushes clean and last longer! :)
You did an excellent job explaining how to use the kreg jig. You should make that section a video on its own. I love how your project turned out as well! I think it would look great in an entryway to be used as a bench/shoe storage. I may need to keep my eye out for something like this!
Boy that was a challenge you could see the wheels turning in your head! But once you decided to sand it out I was like wow.. it's gonna be good. Nice color choice.
I look up to your teaching. Even if i was a kindergarten /early childhood teacher thru third my skills are competsble. You tesch eithout talking down and are calm. I see others are tesching you in comments. Thank you for following your dream. I can only benefit. Gold star.
Lauren, we have a similar sized chest that helps define our living room area from our dining room area. All four sides are visible. On a piece like your Hope Chest, if you also finished the back side and base you might get more money for it from the right buyer. Cheers!

That’s so cool you were able to restore it with cedar! Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊
The locks are a danger. Thanks for highlighting this. They are a suffocation danger to children. Nice work on the chest! I love my kreg jig!
Yes! It’s always good to be aware of these hazards.
I’ve seen vintage ( Gorgeous) Lane Cedar chests as high as $900 USD you’ve under priced it. You did a gorgeous job.

Seeing this makes me both happy and sad. My grandmother had one, but termites got to it and destroyed it. 😢 You gave this one a new life...❤
ohh bummer! yes, I’m glad I was able to save it!

Great job Lauren. Mad City Modern loves these Lane Cedar Chests
An for some of you that love to refinish furniture too cleaning the brushes with that comb tool is very helpful at getting out all the the paint. I lost mine somewhere and resorted to using a wire brush I had and that did a pretty good job too.

For cutting the pieces for the base, I think you would want a fine cut blade where the teeth are closer together.
You should use the gliding wax on the lock itself. Looks odd that it is a different color from the handles. Love the color and base.
ohh great point! i'll touch it up! thanks for watching!
Beautifully done
It's a really nice color. It looks so good

You did an excellent job explaining how to use the kreg jig. You should make that section a video on its own.
I love how your project turned out as well! I think it would look great in an entryway to be used as a bench/shoe storage. I may need to keep my eye out for something like this!
I think that’s a GREAT IDEA! I might just do that 😊 appreciate your feedback!
Looks good! New base is nice. 😊

Thanks, I'm happy with how the color turned out!
Lauren, we have a similar sized chest that helps define our living room area from our dining room area. All four sides are visible.
On a piece like your Hope Chest, if you also finished the back side and base you might get more money for it from the right buyer.
Cheers!
You’re right, but the back is cedar and i decide to leave it unfinished!
Beautiful, great job.❤❤
Thank you so much for all of the educational content. It is so helpful!
of course!
Good color. Nice job. I think I would put the base all around, not just 3 sides. I think it would have better stability.
typically when furniture has any sort of base there are only 3 sides with supports. thanks for watching!
I love this I think should make more
Amazing transformation! The tool to clean the brush is similar to a dog's grooming brush!
its so helpful!!
gorgeous trunk ... love it all .. color and base .... excellent job!
I'm glad you like it! thanks for watching!
Looks much better. Good job!
I can see someone using this as a coffee table and storing extra blankets in. 😊
It’s perfect for that! 😊
I love it!! It turned out beautifully
If reading up side down....looks like it was manufactured 02/11/58. Nice color choices. Looks great.
Beautiful! As before, loving your style and taste. ♥️
I'm glad you like it!
I love that piece, wish you were near East TN, cause I would definitely have you redone our bedroom set! 😊
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Wow! Looks so great!!
I'm so glad you like it! 😊
It turned out awesome!
I have always wanted to learn how to craig jig!!..I bet that is some total satisfaction you push me to try to practice!!
It takes some practice but it's worth it! it totally elevates the look of the furniture!
@ oh I bet!!..I totally need to learn!
I needed this video a week ago for the base info😅
ohh no! hopefully it helps you in the future too!
looks fantastic great color too
I'm so glad you like it!
Question: why don't you paint the backs of your projects? I feel like this chest may not be against a wall.
The backs of these cedar chests are made with cedar. Personally, I would not want to paint the cedar back.
Oh, well that makes sense @@annagonzales4837
the back of this one was cedar so it's not meant to be finished like the rest (:
The color reminds me of an army trunks
It's beautiful ....... Deborah 🇨🇦
Lauren can you do a video on the piece of equipment that you have this chest resting on?
its a Ryobi Speed Bench ☺️
I just inherited the same chest! I'm taking notes!
The base of mine has a drawer.
i’m sure you could still add one underneath!
There was a recall on the locks on Lane cedar chests. The will send you a new lock.
Beautiful! Love it!
