Would it be any different than reading through a book as a group? I’m not really sold on the “game” aspect & would like to know how the mechanisms work. Does each individual get to make their own decisions and go their own way, or do they have to decide one path and always go through it together? It would be cool to see people split up and get caught up in different side quests.
I read so many of these when they first came out (when I was in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade) that I had to buy 40 of them off eBay a couple years ago as Christmas gifts for my kids. (I'm so happy they love these books too!) This is likely a must-buy. Thank you, Dice Tower, for keeping my wallet so slim.
With a group setting, could the group split and go different routes? I think that would be a pretty cool mechanic in a co-op game. It would be cool as well if if you did split, there are certain choices that can potentially bring you back together.
i noticed the game said 1-99 players, is this not more of a solo type of game? how would higher counts work? do you just do choices based on majority rule?
Yes I'm intrigued by this too. As a teacher of 11 year olds I'm wondering if it would work for a whole class to play together over a few sessions. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that. And, any recommendations for others that could...
@@tombishop3761 do not play this in the classroom. Some of the things that happen might not be appropriate in that setting. As for multiple people, yes we just did a vote on which option we wanted and simple majority ruled.
Picked this up at Target yesterday and my wife and I played through the whole thing last night. 2-2.5 hours definitely is right and we probably only saw 30-40% of the game. Really fantastic fun though. I never did these books as a kid but the writing reminded me a lot of the old Sierra and Lucas Arts point and click adventure PC games. Just cheeky, zany fun! This is effectively a solo game though that you can add more people to so I wouldn't really recommend it beyond 2p. Shared inventory and following one path of your choosing. I know we'll go through it again at some point since we didnt get the best ending and there was a lot still to see. After that it's very easy to give to friends to play through as you don't destory anything.
Interesting! This definitely sparked my interest I'll have to look into this more. I fondly remember the Goose Bumps choose your own adventure books the most!
The randomness was the whole point. You got a unique adventure each time. With this game you can only play it a few times before you know what will happen. And the 'horrible art' was an exact likeness of what you used to get in the Fighting Fantasy books.
Yeah, and add in the fact that you can play EtDC an infinite number of times whereas this is, as Tom put it, is a disposable game you can only play once spoiler free or a few times knowing some spoilers. Also the theme disconnect they mention (things happen that are unrelated to the main story) going so far as to say they wouldn't have been surprised to find a mummy (?) in the house. 🙄 Its the randomness that gives EtDC the edge, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of this theme, not a fan of disposable games, and quite honestly I vastly prefer the EtDC art. Big pass.
Seems cool, and MM and CSI have it at $20 which I think is a great price for it, since "theoretically" you can play through it again unlike Exit or Unlock, and isn't as expensive as T.I.M.E Stories and expansions
If you’re looking for something to maybe wet your appetite until this comes out then check “Four Against Darkness” on Amazon. Haven’t actually played it yet but it looks to be a pretty good solo Dungeons and Dragons, choose your own adventure style game.
If you guys enjoyed this you should check out Destiny Quest books. They provide a pretty good choose your own adventure experience. There are at least 3 books that I'm aware of as of now. Thanks for the video!
I just picked this up today. It looks like fun. The reason the writing seems weak is because it's based on the children's book series. The fun will be in the playing, not reading the story.
The KOSMOS Adventure in a Box series has rendered this game obsolete. They're the perfect refinement of what T.I.M.E Stories tried, but without the annoying die rolls or loops. Story is not quite as good, but the puzzles are a heck of a lot better. The Choose Your Own Adventure series falls short in every category when stacked up against KOSMOS: story, art, components, engaging play time, and puzzles.
I think I will wait until we see more of this game, maybe even spoil the first one through a playthrough video. So far, I think I'll stick with Time Stories, it feels to me like the natural board game evolution of CYOA style storytelling, whereas this feels like they just grabbed one of the old books from the 80s, tore out its pages, and just glued them onto cards.
I love CYOA and R.A. Montgomery was one of the top authors they had. However I don't see this being any more fun than the books... And "House of Danger" was not one of Montgomery's better ones in my opinion. The concept is interesting but I'll be passing on this one.
Does 1-99 mean I can’t play this with my 100 person gaming group?
I think you need a 2nd copy of the game... :/

Yay! I was hoping this would be good, but WOW(!) I did not think it would get that much praise. Can’t wait 😊
cool, cool, but what differs it from the much cheaper books? is there something on the plus side?

I loved these books when I was a kid. This is a pre-order-worthy game for me. I hope they release more stories from the series.

Is this game kid (younger child) friendly? Best age range?
There is also “Forest of Fate” and it has been fun with our group. Shorter game with a large variety of endings (not as many deaths probably...)

How did you understand the nostalgia for this, but not for 'Escape the Dark Castle'? This is virtually the same idea but not as random.
You answered your own question. Random. And horrible art.
The randomness was the whole point. You got a unique adventure each time. With this game you can only play it a few times before you know what will happen.

I knew the graphics looked familiar, Prospero Hall also designed Bob Ross: The Art of Chill game. The components have a similar look to them.
I want a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark game next. :)
Does it have replayability

I don't see it for reserve/notification at CoolStuff yet.
Links please?
Hmm I could've sworn I saw it at CSI. Well MM has it still www.miniaturemarket.com/zmgcya01.html
My wife grabbed this from Target for $10 during a sale they had.

thank you guys made this a definite buy for me... for after i am finished with the 7th continent... :)

i am not quite sure what should make me buy this as a "boardgame" instead of a cyoa book

Totally going to snag this one. Read many of these books as a kid.
I'm waiting for the Escape from Tenopia series of choose your own adventure game

I honestly thought, before I saw the video, that they would hate it and think it boring. Glad I was wrong. :)
Wow... it's actually based on a real CYOA book from the series. I was thinking maybe they created this just for the game, but nope!
sounds cool but i think you should still show an example turn to make it more clear
You can't without spoilers.

Players 1-99? how do you play with 99 players? :P
Tom what books were you reading with "10 finger choices" LOL. Sam is on the money, CYOA only had 2-3 choices each time it branched off!
I love CYOA and R.A. Montgomery was one of the top authors they had. However I don't see this being any more fun than the books... And "House of Danger" was not one of Montgomery's better ones in my opinion. The concept is interesting but I'll be passing on this one.
Play with peramdeth rules.
I'm sold.
