Countless factors can mitigate against self-observation in Western society. Charles Tart, Ph.D., noted psychologist and author of Waking Up, suggests we begin by learning to focus on seemingly trivial details such as bodily sensations. Through repeated and diligent practice, he says, the process of self-observation leads us to a larger view of ourselves and our potential.

Boy do I relate haha. My irritation while driving is one of the biggest causes of my stress. But I also practice observing it and letting it go whenever it happens. Like he said, I’ve gotten way better since then. But I still have days where I just have trouble stopping myself from reacting.

Wonderful conversation. Yes, self-observation is not allowed. Thinking (not) allowed.

To achieve inner peace you have to be able to make the distinction between what is fantasy and what is reality. Our thoughts keep us trussed up in fantasy, they have no abiding substance. Unless we see ourselves on the deeper level through self observation, without the distractions of our thoughts, then our piece of mind is like a house of cards, it is fragile and based in self delusion.

One of the benefits of meditation is self-observation.
Most people would be surprised how many ideas and beliefs
have an effect on their personality and their thinking without
being conscious or aware. Many beliefs were downloaded
in childhood and are still exerting an effect even though
    no longer necessary.

5:10 Q: "The art of self-observation: is that the goal of any discipline at all?"
    A: "No ... "
    What about Buddhism?
And: as the man just explained, we need feedback from others. The question is: what responsibility(ies) do we have for observing ourselves? In particular, when we know we are biased, as the man said previously.

I believe that Mishlove's statement that introspection was pretty much out even in psychology is outdated. While at the time of this interview it was probably true. Today introspection is integrated as a technique similar to meditation, grown on our own soil, the soil of our own psychological tradition. This is why I personally prefer introspection over meditation when teaching it to others. While I myself can practice both, I have found that many Western people have a problem with meditation or have a biased opinion about it. Introspection is a natural technique grown within our own culture, which is why we should have a preference for it.

One exception, anyone who would show emotion about something they hiding, are consciously letting you know with their emotion outside of language. Just taking a wild guess that he's not married.
