Another small thing, White Blood Cell's number is a pun on itself - 1146, each number's first syllable in Japanese combine to "ii shiro" (ichi ichi shi roku), which basically means "good white." I don't know about the Red Blood Cell's number (AE3803), but that is a hex color for a copper-ish red.
It was also mentioned in the manga for the RBC designs. Also when the RBC is carrying CO2, its journey is more relaxed so they don't need to rush as much as they do when they're delivering O2. Apparently the change of color helps the other cells identify that.
I'm imagining that this would look like a RBC with a "ship captain's hat" that's too big to fit through corridors and the RBC's personality just being too prideful to take it off. XD
if she really was a sickle cell, and as the doc said, there would be more sickle cell than just one, then would they be twins or clones or just with the added cowlicks?
Sickle Cell Trait doesn't make full-blown Sickle Cells, but it can cause the symptomless host to have a few cells that can warp and get clumsy under extreme stress. It's completely possible this cell flows badly through the veins because she has poorly-formed hemoglobin similar to a Sickle Cell, or from un-expressed Sickle Cell Trait, and is just a little deformed or inflexible. So if other Sickle Cell Trait cells showed up, they would just have little deviations like a different hair sticking up and clumsy sense of direction. I think they would all be more different from each other than the Red Blood Cells we've seen.
I really like to see you react to the different spin offs of cells at work theres so many. Cells at work BLACK: The cells are in an unhealthy body. They smoke and drink, ect. Cells that dont work: Where the erythroblast doesnt want to become a red blood cell but wants to be a white blood cell instead. Bacteria at work: where we see good and bad bacteria fight it out. If u have the time!!
about the colour of the Red Blood Cell, there is a spin-off manga series titled Hataraku Saibou BLACK by Harada Shigemitsu. this takes place in harsher condition of the body and it's oriented towards adults (since it's made by Harada-sensei, of course). in the first chapter, the red blood cells turned pink from the smokes. the owner of the body is a heavy smoker. so the red blood cells reacted with the smoke and turned pink. just like the Red Blood Cell's reversible vest, but this one turned pink from the... I think it was carbon monoxide? whatever it was I suggest you read the manga series as well. not only the original, but the BLACK as well (but don't read Hataraku Saibou BLACK in public)
Yeah, literally every medical student or doctor who watches this show has expressed doubt in the sickle cell fan theory. I'm not sure how it started, but after hearing numerous reviews from doctors/med students of why her being a sickle cell wouldn't make sense, she probably is just an airhead. Love your videos, by the way! All of them, not just the Cells At Work ones. :)
@@GigsTaggart The gene is practically nonexistant in Japan's homogeneous population- and yeah it is very safe to assume the host is Japanese, their heart is shaped like a shinto temple and they got a transfusion that speaks in a Kansai dialect.
I’m thinking one way this could be represented would be that sickle cells would be dressed to various degrees of samurai armor. Some might only have the hat, others shin guards, while a few are in full kit, all while trying to do the job of a regular red cell. They would get stuck in tight spaces all the time, needing relief from transfused cells to help them along. Then, one day, the host gets bitten by a mosquito, and malaria is introduced. The Red Cells suddenly become warriors who fight the parasites instinctively.
Yeah, I treat it as more of a reference than the actual condition. She's a ditz, which makes her get lost easily, and the cowlicks that commonly indicate that can just happen to resemble sickle cells.
Yeah it's a super common anime trope/reference. The Ahoge is always meant to help designate the lovable airhead/eccentric character. I'm also doubting the Sickle Cell theory because I seem to remember that beyond the shape, the hemoglobin in Sickle Cell also has trouble binding to the O2, and the RBC in "Cells at Work" doesn't seem to have any trouble actually carrying or moving the O2. Please let me know if I'm wrong, has been a long time since I've been in a biology class.
@Baat So something like anime about ballet or belly dancing or flamenco (like actually learning how to do them for a competition coming up with no romance!), baking (actual baking or at least what goes on in the baking process like the yeast and other components as the characters), more real-life romances like Nana, etc? I'm down for those types.
Here’s an obscure one: You can see platelets piggyback on neutrophils in the OP and occasionally through the show. This occurs under thrombo inflammatory conditions.
Dude, I was wondering if there was some basis to that! I saw it once and thought it was for artistic sake, but then they repeated it multiple times. Then I knew that there was a reference hidden somewhere there.
I've read some comments that RBC's # "AE3803" is actually a shade of red in RGB and WBC's # "1146" is actually a Japanese pun on "White" not sure what the U was for. Edit: "U" can also be a pun - one of meanings of "Yuu" is brave so he is therefore Brave White
thats super cool i never noticed that before @ the white blood cell number being a pun for white!! its probably bc 4 is "shi" and 6 is "roku" and white is "shiro",,, im not a naitve japanese speaker tho so thats just my guess
The Cowlick or Ahoge is a visual cue common to Japanese anime and manga. Consisting of a single, often large, lock of hair sticking out from the top of the head, it is most often used to identify foolish, bumbling or carefree characters.
Jati Sumirat Ahegao, also called O-Face also called "Oro-Face", is a term of Japanese pornography describing a facial expression of fictional characters during sex often used in pornographic videogames, manga and anime. Meanwhile, the Ahegao face became a fashion trend for erotic enthusiasts in Japan.
Its probs staphylococcus got some other viruses to help. Influenza type c. She probably (I give genders to germs. CELLHUMANS!) Wouldn't as shes too kind.
The life expectancy of a neutrophil in the circulation is 5 days (Simon and Kim, Blood 2010). So in 5 days, this poor person has had a strep pneumo infection, food poisoning, TWO forms of influenza, heat stroke, a probably subclinical cancer, an allergic reaction bad enough to require steroids, and a major bleed requiring transfusion. Given all that, the idea that they also had a mutation in an erythroblast isn't all that implausible. Also, the RBC is shown having difficulty squeezing through the capillaries, so she could be a sickle cell. Possibly with a side of persistence of fetal hemoglobin since she seems to have difficulty letting go of her oxygen (hangs out and chats with the non-hematologic cells a lot.)
Spoiler for last episode... Red Blood Cell can’t be a sickle, because she was getting all the oxygen delivered without getting lost once when the body was dying from hemorrhagic shock. Even after the disaster passed, she was able to deliver oxygen without problems. She’s just naturally an airhead that needed practice and after going round the heart and lungs a couple of times, became a pro. Why else could she pass the red blood cell school and be allowed to have her own junior red blood cell?

kinesiology? what kind of pseudo medicine is that? people like you just cause people harm, manipulation their trust, defraud the sick and offer false hope. Trash. I sincerely hope you do not enter medicine, or if you do, leave behind the woo
@@hiatusinc Hii! I think you are confused with what I meant. Here in the states (unfamilar with how other countries work), you can have any degree and still able to apply to med schools. You just have to make sure you have completed the prerequisite courses of the medical program you are applying too. For example, a lot of my friends are engineering majors for their undergrad but are pre-med students because their ultimate goal is to become a physician :). They just need to take extra courses such as organic chemistry, (that is not under their degree plan), so that they hit the requirements for med school. Kinesiology is NOT a branch of medicine and does NOT involve manipulation. It is also not "pseduo medicine". It has nothing to do with medicine. Kinesiology is often define as "exercise science" and explores the ideas of biomechanics and how the human body reacts to exercise. This is the degree most physical therapist have. Everyone can have different undergrad education but we are all taught the same concepts of medicine in medical school.
No I stand by what I meant. Your explanation just clarifies to me that the US is really losing the plot, what with allowing chiropractors to practice medicine at an equivalent level as physicians is laughable, the fact that homeopathy has its own accredited college and intern in hospitals is just mind boggling. Kinesiology is another concocted practice that clearly thinks it deserves recognition where it doesn't. This is the definition of kinesiology in my country's official organisation that represents it: Kinesiology encompasses holistic health disciplines which use the gentle art of muscle monitoring to access information about a person’s well being. Originating in the 1970’s, it combines Western techniques and Eastern wisdom to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Kinesiology identifies the elements which inhibit the body’s natural internal energies and accessing the life enhancing potential within the individual." (Definition approved by the Australian Kinesiology Association 1999.) It sounds like pure and unadulterated woo to me. You're not physiotherapists. But you think you are for some reason. The website is blatant about its agenda to jump on the "complementary" medicine train by saying "Australians spend over $1 billion annually on therapies not part of the mainstream medicine" - i.e HEY GUYS LET'S FORM AN ORGANISATION TO MAKE MONEY OFF THESE POOR DESPERATE FOOLS BY MAKING UP ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE THERAY THAT PROMISES ETERNAL BLISS AND BALANCE WITH THE UNIVERSE MUAHAHAHA yeah, fuck off
Btw, this is the official website promoting kinesiology www.aka.asn.au/about-kinesiology I love this paragraph "The real goal of any Kinesiology ‘balance’ is to identify the bottomline cause of any imbalance and then resolve it. It may be nutritional, emotional, structural, psychological, energetic or even spiritual - something as simple as an ‘attitude’, or a forgotten memory." I can imagine it now, 50 years in the future. Woman after enduring a 20 hour labour and a postpartum haemorrhage of 2.5L, finds out her rectus abdominis has separated while on the operating table. Oh no! The obstetrician doesn't know what to do. The general surgeons have fainted. The physician doesn't know what muscles are. It is 3AM. Midwife pages the on call kinesiologist specialist who rushes in from home, palpates the mum all over, and does a detailed reading of her abdomen and pelvic muscles. The family waits with baited breaths. His diagnosis is that her chi is disrupted due to this muscle separation, which means she will develop postpartum psychosis in 3 days, the abnormal contractions in her uterus will lead to attachment issues with her newborn, and the pressure of labour has affected her gastric motility to the point that she has now developed gluten intolerance, and that if she does not have her muscles monitored for the next 48 hours in ICU, she will become a husk of herself, deprived of all spiritual connection to her ancestors, she will be unable to breastfeed and her baby will develop jaundice and die. Intensive bio-system feedback therapy commences. Without the kinesiologist, the medical system as we know it will collapse.
Nice to see you address the sickle cell fan theory, haha. I don't understand how this video already has two dislikes! You make this anime, which is already interesting and educational, so much more so. I really love watching you talk about all of this stuff, and I can't wait for more!
My theory is that the our adorable Red Blood Cell character is actually an avatar for the human host the cells live within. That could explain her more human like nature (getting lost, facing insecurities and developing meaningful relationships) but who knows? What do you guys think?
I've seen at least 2 episodes where AE-2803 (a.k.a. Red Blood Cell-chan) has noticeable difficulty fitting through capillary alleys to make oxygen deliveries. She never gets completely stuck, but she does move slowly and the sides of her face are noticeably squished. This could be another piece of evidence toward the sickle cell theory
About red blood cell, if I remember well, the author said in the manga that the hair thing just 'appeared' on RBC one day. Like they started drawing her that way and the hair 'sickle' kinda stayed because they thought it was cute. They also made a joke about RBC being a sickle cell but it was a joke. In the end there's no real reason for her new hairstyle aside from aesthetic. That being said, even the author thought about sickle cell when analysing her hair sooooo... conclude what you will. As for the human inside which CAW is happening, they've been unlucky enough to get injured or sick all the time so one sickle cell or two wouldn't even surprise me xD
I could listen to you talk about this stuff everyday. Partially the accent, but mostly the turning something that is sorta educational in an odd way to something thoroughly educational. I'm not into health or "doctoring" sciences (I'm a comp science person instead), but you make it easy to understand and it helps it on such a silly anime as well! Keep doing it!!!
This series reminds me of the French tv series "Once Upon a Time... Life" what I saw dubbed as a child. It was about children and how they got sick - then it showed inside there body how all the cells work to fix things. And it was made in 80's. To this day I don't dare to breath when I go behind the car what's running because of one of the episodes the kid got sick when breathing in the smoke.
I think that episode was about carbon dioxide poisoning. But because it was a children's show they didn't want a big fire or some suicide stuff with the car.. So they made one of the main characters just walk past a car and breath the smoke in.

I am looking forward every time with a very understandable explanation. The opening of the doctor is easy to understand, and many things I do not know are very learning.
doctor, daijoubu, don't get too attached to the platelets. Its all too common for viewers to go on a life crisis nose dive after watching their first animu. If you have a partner ask them to regularly pull you back to reality by stepping on you while calling you "onichan gambate fighto"
Thank you for this. These bonus facts are great, and getting the opinions from those actually in the medical field concerning the sickle cell theory is a breath of fresh air. You've got a great channel here, Doc! I hope it continues to grow. Keep up the good work. :)
I always loved science and medicine, but it's a lot better when you have something like this anime to show you this kind of things in a... kind of different perspective, or a real doctor, who knows how to explain it in a funny but complete way. absolutely love your videos!
I think, that the blood cell was just simply new, as in created recently (but don't quote me on this I'm not a doctor). Also, visual media demands establishing shots, like the red blood cell exploring the body. Not all of the visuals can be references, although I must oblige the creators if they managed to pull it off for all episodes (I'm also on ep 4, I haven't watched it yet)

about the colour of the Red Blood Cell,
there is a spin-off manga series titled Hataraku Saibou BLACK by Harada Shigemitsu. this takes place in harsher condition of the body and it's oriented towards adults (since it's made by Harada-sensei, of course). in the first chapter, the red blood cells turned pink from the smokes. the owner of the body is a heavy smoker. so the red blood cells reacted with the smoke and turned pink. just like the Red Blood Cell's reversible vest, but this one turned pink from the... I think it was carbon monoxide? whatever it was
I suggest you read the manga series as well. not only the original, but the BLACK as well (but don't read Hataraku Saibou BLACK in public)
And it might not be very PC to say it, but the body is surely assumed to be Asian. Sickle cell is not something the creators are thinking about.

So something like anime about ballet or belly dancing or flamenco (like actually learning how to do them for a competition coming up with no romance!), baking (actual baking or at least what goes on in the baking process like the yeast and other components as the characters), more real-life romances like Nana, etc?
I'm down for those types.

Here’s an obscure one: You can see platelets piggyback on neutrophils in the OP and occasionally through the show. This occurs under thrombo inflammatory conditions.

Yeah but I'd assume they extend the blood cells' lives as it'd be weird to constantly be killing off characters

She's like more determined to do her job correctly when the body is almost close to dying.
TRU DAT!

kinesiology? what kind of pseudo medicine is that? people like you just cause people harm, manipulation their trust, defraud the sick and offer false hope.
Kinesiology identifies the elements which inhibit the body’s natural internal energies and accessing the life enhancing potential within the individual." (Definition approved by the Australian Kinesiology Association 1999.)
It sounds like pure and unadulterated woo to me. You're not physiotherapists. But you think you are for some reason. The website is blatant about its agenda to jump on the "complementary" medicine train by saying "Australians spend over $1 billion annually on therapies not part of the mainstream medicine" - i.e HEY GUYS LET'S FORM AN ORGANISATION TO MAKE MONEY OFF THESE POOR DESPERATE FOOLS BY MAKING UP ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE THERAY THAT PROMISES ETERNAL BLISS AND BALANCE WITH THE UNIVERSE MUAHAHAHA

Btw, this is the official website promoting kinesiology www.aka.asn.au/about-kinesiology
I love this paragraph
"The real goal of any Kinesiology ‘balance’ is to identify the bottomline cause of any imbalance and then resolve it. It may be nutritional, emotional, structural, psychological, energetic or even spiritual - something as simple as an ‘attitude’, or a forgotten memory."
I can imagine it now, 50 years in the future.

*A E S T H E T I C*
Well of you do that oftenly
You can get sick, so try not to breath in the smoke frequently
I think that episode was about carbon dioxide poisoning. But because it was a children's show they didn't want a big fire or some suicide stuff with the car.. So they made one of the main characters just walk past a car and breath the smoke in.

The amount of work and thought the people put into Cells at Work is truly amazing. Even though it's a simple 12 episode one it's a great show
I think, that the blood cell was just simply new, as in created recently (but don't quote me on this I'm not a doctor). Also, visual media demands establishing shots, like the red blood cell exploring the body. Not all of the visuals can be references, although I must oblige the creators if they managed to pull it off for all episodes (I'm also on ep 4, I haven't watched it yet)
I must say I love this series, currently I have my nerd of a science teacher fangirling over every little detail of this show, and it's really cool to see a doctor like an anime series like this! Keep it up!
