I have loved this car since I first saw it on a poster in 1983.
Interesting fact: Lancia had no money to compete in the WRC Manufacturer's Cup for the entire 1983 season -- they couldn't go head-to-head against Audi in every race, because they just didn't have enough money to put a winning car on the circuit for every race. So Walter Rörhl *didn't* race in every race that year -- only the ones where he knew he could slaughter the Audis in the race. He did so well, that only racing in 6 out of 12 events -- including sitting out the last two events where Audi poured everything they could into them -- Lancia *still* managed to score enough points to win the WRC Manufacturer's Cup. And Rórhl himself came in 2nd place in the WRC Driver's Championship!! Only racing *half* the races in the whole season!! What an amazing driver, and what an amazing car!!

This is what Walter Röhrl had to say in his book about the Lancia 037 (crappy translation by me):
_"The 037 was precise, neutral and you could steer it nearly completely with the throttle. With its long wheelbase it was much less nervous than the Stratos but it was exactly as agile. Thanks to the mid-engine I could drive it with incredible cornering speeds. But there was the limit, narrow and tight as a rope on which you balanced. The 037 was unbelievably sensitive there. The engine with its supercharger had an extreme amount of steam from the low end, we had up to 320 bhp for a car that weighed between 2120 and 2160 pounds. All in all the 037 was the most beautiful rally car that I ever drove."_

You would not get five metres anywhere in Europe and in Italy no chance .
The rules were for 200 road going cars but lancia fiddled those figures the same has most of the other did the same , many ended up converted to full rally cars or further upgraded to Evo cars .
So in the end real road going versions are very rare beasts.
These days there are many fake versions on the market.

It would have been better to just not make cars for awhile until the right buyer came along, rather than selling out to FCA. Fiat had 2 marques besides Ferrari with a sporting history but could only support one. The decision was made in favour of Alfa Romeo. So Lancia first suffered the loss of the racing & rallying programme ,then became a brand of rebadged luxury Fiats. Exports ceased in 1995 being Italy only and the brand has been left to slowly die ever since

The Scorpion is the American name of the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, that had never been intended to make anyone "believe that it was a version of this car". The Beta Montecarlo, launched in 1975, had simply been the base used by Lancia to develop the Beta Montecarlo Turbo (that won the World Endurance Championship for Manufacturers in 1980 and 1981, beating the Porsche 935) and the 037.
The Beta Montecarlo Turbo and the 037, used the same FIAT Twincam engine of the "slow" Beta Montecarlo/Scorpion and of several other FIAT production cars, but obviously with different tuning. That of the Turbo was particularly impressive. With only 1.43 liters displacement, the engine developed 480hp continuous power and 530hp peak power (in an era when the F1 1.5l turbo engines developed slightly more than 600hp, but had to last only for 300km, less than two hours, and often failed to do it).

He's been on the show a few times, I like him because he's VERY knowledgeable about his cars. A lot of guys that Jay has on are just collectors who buy cars as status symbols. You can tell because they know almost nothing about the car, and Jay has to actually explain to them why their car is special. This guy literally knows every detail, so you can tell he's a real enthusiast. I think he might be a little autistic (or just shy) so he comes off as boring -- a lot of successful finance people are like that -- but I still enjoy him as a guest because he's definitely a real car guy.

No. In italian, a letter 'c' followed by 'i' is pronounced 'ch' If a 'c' is followed by 'h', it's pronounced 'ki'. So correctly, 'Lancia' is 'Lan cha'. If it was spelt 'Lanchia', it would be pronounced 'Lan key a'.
Same goes for 'Lamborghini'. It is a hard 'g' because of the 'h' following it. If there was no 'h', it would be a soft 'g', more like a 'j'. End of grammar lesson....

The Lancia Scorpion was never meant to be a "fake" stradale... It was merely a rebadged Euro Lancia Montecarlo. And it was a real series production car, while the Stradale was built in very small numbers just for homologation purposes.

Yeah, I didn't like his roasting of the MonteCarlo, it was a nice car at the time (and handled ok if you put a sack of gravel in the front boot/trunk). Admittedly the Scorpion model released in the US lacked the stylish rear 3/4 glass buttresses and had rather awkward round headlamps so it lost the sophisticated look of the European model.

additionally the montecarlo was in production years before development of the 037 began - the 037 was based on the montecarlo/scorpion, not the other way around. the 037 only functionally shared the windows/some center components as it was a fully tube framed race car, but the point remains, it's a nice car with a different intention.

The Scorpion/Montecarlo was not the road-going version of the 037 but was the parts bin basis for it including the centre tub section hence the similar profile.

One of the most lustworthy pieces of automotive art Lancia ever produced. I remember that 1983 WRC Group B season: the Lancia 037 v Audi's Quattro. Amazing year. And Lancia was the underdog with just 2WD compared to the 4WD Audi. And Walter Rohl was a great driver too. There's a retro hommage to this car now: the Kimera 037. What a machine that is

  • @danieldimitri6133
    @danieldimitri6133 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Jay's mistake here is to assume the 037 is any more than a nod to the Montecarlo. The scorpion isn't too far off from the Montecarlo, it has a little less power and doesn't look as good with American safety bumpers and different headlights. But the Montecarlo goes back to 1975 and was a road going car in the Lancia beta series which was transverse engine and transaxle like fiats 128 series but with the twin cam series of engine like fiats 124 series. The 037 is clearly a ground up car with maybe some trim borrowed from the Montecarlo and the scorpion was never meant to be an 037 alternative. We're comparing a low production run racecar for the street that was very expensive to a smog and safety regulated American version of a common European car that happens be styled the same.

In the 80’s I owned 2 Lancia beta’s. One 1300cc coupé and one 2000cc HPE executive and I loved them. Both 4 cyl twin overheads cam. At that time, the Stradale, loosely derived from the lame, yet great looking, beta Monte-Carlo, was something of a Graal for Lancia’s lovers. I once drove along one on my country Belgium highways, same color red, with a beautiful looking lady driving, I believe the importer of the brand then. What a day that was! I remember a video of one in a rally somewhere taken from the front. The car barely touching the ground, on occasions, almost flying from bumps to bumps. Never saw that again. Too bad the brand Lancia no longer lives. They had such wonderful cars. This one is their last hurrah. Emotional time watching this video. Thanks.

Ok here we go: When Fiat bought Lancia in 1969 they started the Beta project which used the great Fiat Lampredi twincam in transverse FWD configuration, in 3 different bodystyles. As a spinoff they realized they could use that driveplant in mid-engine config, in a big brother to X1/9 called the X1/20. However they they changed their minds and it was badged as ”Lancia Beta MonteCarlo” in the late 70’s.
2-litre, 120hp it was a frisky little sportscar with great handling.
(THIS car was later sold as Scorpione in the US.)
Come the 80’s, Fiat/Lancia needed a successor to the aging 131 Abarth in WRC. They took the Beta MonteCarlo (Scorpion) and chopped the front & rear off it, and built the 037 as virtually a new group b rally monster. We can still trace the Monte Carlo doors in it!
The engine was instead longitudal mounted and was really the 16V 1995cc from the 131 Abarth, with added supercharger.
    Ok lesson over, class dismissed.

No you have a base car called Lancia Beta "Montecarlo" for europe and "Scorpion" for US. Based on those they mane a prototipe Lancia Group B car codenamed 037. And of corse like most of Group B cars it was nothing like a "base" car. But if they wanted racing they needed to make road version of that 037 wich this is. So basicaly you have a base road car - then a rally car - and finally a road version of that rally car. Same goes for Peugot 205, Reanault 5 Turbo, itd.

There's 3 cars you guys and Jay Leno are confusing with one another. There's the Lancia Beta (called Scorpion in US markets) which is the car he's saying sucks, there's the 037 which is the race car that was designed to look like the Beta but is an entirely unrelated vehicle, and then there's the road going homologation of the race car, which is what this is.
To say that this monster, the 037 Stradale is just the European version of the Scorpion is ridiculous. They are mechanically unrelated cars.

160mph top end as well. 0-60 in around 4.9 seconds.
This car was quick, with a capital Q.
When I was a kid (16-17) I used to see these competing in the Group B rallies on video, with my jaw dropping with envy as I saw the masters of rallying throwing it around at eye-watering speeds on the mountain roads of Europe.
Incredible car. And it was a real Porsche killer, and Audi Quattro killer at the Zenith of Lancia racing.
I would give my eyeteeth to own one. Lucky boy. Another great episode Jay thank you!
