I’ve been fascinated by The 1968 planet of the apes movie since my Dad showed me a video tape of it when I was a kid. The desert scenes when Taylor, Landon and Dodge were exploring are still my favourite parts. I loved Taylor’s jaded/cynical outlook on humanity while he puffed on his cigar.
When I was a kid, I used to ride my horse to the leftover set of Ape City. There were lots of sets left intact at Malibu Creek Park. I also used to climb the cliffs off Point Dume where they filmed the finale of the movie.
This is incredible to see the locations.Planet of the apes is a classic. When i was small i watched the movie over and over.I remember my mom even bought me the official planet of the apes coloring books.I would color and watch the movie at the same time.awwww the memories.😃😃😃
My great grandmother was Charltons Housemaid for 35 years. we have tons of pictures... He and his wife even came to christmas with our family back in the 70s.
I was 12 years old when this came out. Was in Paris Texas visiting my grandparents. I went to the local theatre every night for 5 days to watch it. It was so awesome to me then.
I was about 18-years-old in 1968 and remember this movie well. It's one of my favorites. It was a far better time back in those days. Another Heston movie really cherish is, "The Omega Man." I miss Heston.
Thank God for nerds like you guys. I've taken my young son to this area several times. He loves the Original. We've ran the steps & cornfield area. Really takes me back to 1968. I was ten years old. What a trip!
I just made the trip and I can't thank you guys enough for the tour tips!..the sets are quite separated though not too far from each other. I was using your video to find the sets especially the city. Totally lived up to my expectations. No one on the trail knew where it was until we stumbled into two older park hosts ...and older white guy and an Indian who I jokingly called the Lone Ranger and Tonto (Rick and Fred). They we're amazingly kind and the ones to ask about for detailed Hollywood info. They even showed the hidden metal ape cage from "Beneath" movie2 !!!! I wish I could leave a photo on TH-cam. By the way the steps were used in the movie we're from a previous lodge that was there and privately owned before Hollywood studios purchased it.
Absolutely love this film. A total classic. The first time i saw it I had no idea that he was actually home. The final big reveal of the Statue of liberty was COMPLETELY SHOCKING. I will never forget seeing it for the first time. One of those .. Stop eating your popcorn moments. The most tragic ending of all time. Oooooh WOW!!
The early parts of the movie, when the astronauts crash landed, were taken at Big Water Utah. I've ridden quads in the area and seen all those marbled rocks.
16:19 For this shot you can see straight ahead following the center of the beach there is a small dome shaped rock (it looks red in Adam's clip) at the base of the cliff. If you were to stand there and point outward towards the sea, that's the same shot location and angle from the movie. But heck, you guys were close enough!
When I was working for the California Conservation Corps, back in the 70's. parts of Ape city were still standing though pretty dilapidated. . I wish now that I had a camera with me to take photos of what was left at the time. I had hoped you'd try and find the places where Planet of the Apes was filmed. At the time I was there we had been doing some clean up work in the park and came across the remains of the sets that hadn't quite been torn down yet. Really cool video Adam! Nice to see what eventually happened to the sets and what remains. I remember walking up those steps. :)
I've been an Apes fan since the early 70's. Even had a short-lived POTA fan club. I think the series inspired me to move from NoCal to here in SoCal and get in the business. And I've been in it for nearly 30 years, yet have never visited any of these classic sites that are all no more than a thirty-minute drive away. And years ago, I was right at Zuma Beach where they shot the end scenes and didn't even realize it at the time. I guess I need to make the pilgrimage.
I've also been in the Biz over 30 years (2nd Gen). Started as an extra in '89 and now a Creative Producer and also provude Executive Producer services.
So little is mentioned about the amazing set designers and craftsmen that worked so hard to create such a realistic world. I just think that kind of stuff is so really cool. Thanks guys you did a wonderful job :)
This is so cool to see original locations of one of my favorite movies, very interesting, intercutting with original footage is great, what a difference 1968 "film" makes, I've always thought it was a miracle for 1968 that this kind of movie was made and made so well, thanks for taking the time to go out and do this, plan to watch all your other location videos.
I saw this in the theater when I was 7 years old along with fantastic voyage. This vid was really well done and entertaining. I hope that you kept some of the cement you found from ape city....
Beautiful park to visit. The MASH film set is also in the same Park not far from this ape set. Unfortunately the park was ravaged by the recent wildfires and most of it was once again destroyed.
Hey Adam, just had to go back and look at some of your past filming location videos. Then I come across one of my favorite movies of all times Planet Of The Apes!!! I must say as always you definitely did your homework because this was awesome. Thank you for doing what you do because I always look forward to your videos. Being I’m now 49 I can’t stand today’s TV shows with all this reality bull shit. It’s all fake crap and not entertaining what so ever. That’s where you come in being you have a talent where you keep us entertained with fresh shows you put together which is done very well. Thank you once again Adam and will always be looking forward to your upcoming videos👍🏽
Love the detail you guys go into! I live in Arizona. I live next to all sorts of on locations spots. Luckily they look alot like they did when they shot the movies!
I'm jealous you went when it was so sunny! I went to the beach in June and it was super cloudy. Probably going back in December - really crossing my fingers the weather will be better. If I go I'll definitely check out Ape City, I didn't realize it was so accessible!
This is just about the coolest thing on TH-cam Adam, big fan of the Woo also a massive fan of Planet of the apes, its my dream to go there. Is this Paramount Ranch?
That's so crazy I've been at Malibu Creek a bunch now and climbed there this week and just found out that it was the film set. I'm going to have to go back and recreate some of the scenes to send to my dad.
Great vid guys-I've made the trip there a few times and found the locations, remnants, etc., but did you know a cage from "Beneath" is still there, just a little ways up from Ape City? It's pretty cool!
Awesome video Woobraham. Great vistas pinpointing continuous goodness. This is a wonderful movie location for all the colorization, texture, formations, and remnant's of movie greatness. Loved the cage shot's as well you maniacs. #ATW
Malibu Creek State Park is where MASH was filmed. I was there in June 2012 and saw the remains of a few static prop vehicles, which were later toasted in a major fire which roared through there a few years ago.
The secluded beach used is known as "Westward Beach", but formerly AKA "Pirate's Cove" which was a popular though unofficial 'Nude Beach' in the late 60's to late 70's. But the beach is all different now, since all the development and a paved street (Westward Beach Road) going down through it. Bummer!
Adam there are some pieces you missed in Malibu. If you ever come back here email me and I will show them to you. THee caves were the talking doll was found etc. Also other pick up shots.
This location was filmed at Malibu Creek State Park in the Malibu mountains off of highway 101 at the las Virgenes road exit in calabasas, in southern California. I took a hike at the park two months ago when I drove down there, where I hiked to the filming site for the tv show MASH. a great place to go.
This is part of a classic era for science fiction movies that went until Star Wars changed everything and brought 1930-40's space opera back to the big screen. It was my childhood, scary and enthralling at the same time.
At approx. 7:06 pause and look at the rocky outcrop in the distance, it really resembles an apes face, the top two caves as the eyes with the lower cave the mouth!.... coincidence??
The spliced in scenes from the actual movie make this worthwhile.
Remnants. ...wire mesh..cement..momentos...yes!
