"They" make "sanitizer" now for killing germs after someones sick or etc, although I'm skeptical. Plus hot water's not good for all cloths. CR, reviewing the sanitizers on the market would be great, if you can do that.
I've always questioned if that's necessary since detergent would wash germs off/away and the dryer would kill anything left.
all great tips, i've been doing all those for years, cold wash is fine for all but my white laundry

If there is detergent left on your clothes the washer hasn't done its job properly. Detergents are used to wash stains and odors not to stay on clothes.
