    Here in Japan full suit is a must during weddings, also photographers don't get any meals or drinks. We bring our own water and sneakers bars to keep us going.

      ProPhotos Japan & PROPHOTOS 就活撮影 I’ve also heard that if you become a preferred photographer at a venue that they just book your entire season for you - this have any truth?

    • @promediajapan6939
      @promediajapan6939 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, once you get in you are good with work for long time. Most of the venues take 45% cut from your prices though, so its not all roses...

      We do have a wedding on the 7th at the biggest shinto shrine in Nagoya but unfortunately they are very strict about who is allowed to enter their sacred ground etc. We can't even use the pictures from this place on our own website, which is shame because Im sure people from outside Japan would love to see the ceremony. However if we book anything on the 5th or 6th in a less strict place I will let you know.

    Between the super straight-up manner of speaking and the Canadian accent, it's a pleasure to listen and learn from you!
    This was so incredibly helpful! I just shot my first wedding and really enjoyed it - so hopefully this becomes a "thing" for me.
    I really wish I had found your videos before/when I was preparing; but I do think that this is super helpful to debrief!
    Lol your rants about memory card precaution, checkered shirts, and/or monopods as a self-defense tool just make this whole learning process really great!
    So, thank you for posting these and sharing your brain and talent and skills/advice. It is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to continue to explore your content. :)

    Taylor, when recently asked how I was able to photograph 50 weddings my first year as a wedding photographer (9/19/20 - 9/19/21) quite often I send them your way and this video (not sure how I missed it) is spot on!
    The couples experience is soo important!!
    As are first impressions from other vendors, guest, and family.
    When you are able to put people at ease, blend into the background, and are transparent with pricing you’re already in the top 10%.
    I’ll be sending this video and say…”Just do what Taylor says here and you’re golden” instead of trying to explain what you so eloquently elaborated on.
    Happy shooting and thanks for all the context you have shared over the years. 😊

    I am so happy that you touched base on number 14 : Dress Well. I do not comprehend how a person let alone a "professional" could ever show up for a wedding in dungarees and a t-shirt with logo. How difficult is it if you do not own a decent shirt, to go and purchase one for the sole purpose of being present at a sacred union. I find it is more of a self respect issue as well as a dis respect to the couple who have waited their whole lives to unite their love under GOD or whatever their religion may be.

    I'm gonna shoot my first wedding at the end of the month and I couldn't be more stressed out (to the point that I have trouble sleeping lol).
    I'm thinking of everything that could go wrong, being a introvet, even though I prepared all my gear for the wedding,
    from the holster for dual DSLRs, to the lenses (35 to 85mms), batteries, SD cards and so on, I think I'm covered but I just feel like I'm gonna be awkward
    or unprofessional or make beginner mistakes at some point and ruin everything. BUT, you make wedding photography look like it's relatively easy and a lot of fun
    and a great experience so that actually reassures me and helps me find some peace and sleep.
    I feel like your tips will greatly help me during this journey, so thank you very much sir! o7

    LOL About the monopod! I shoot around 3-5 concerts a year, one night I was leaving a venue in Orange County after a metal concert, it wasn't super sketchy but throughout the night I made a point of making friends with a number of the security guards watching the backstage as well as the parking lot. When they saw me come out of the back of the venue with a AAA laminate they were super friendly and I hung around a couple of them making small talk until my uber showed up to take me back home. When out shooting city scapes I always carry a pocket knife and stun gun and try to stick to well populated areas.

    If its a wedding with a buffet style dinner the meal timing doesn't seem to be as much of a problem since I have had them let me hit the buffet line before its opened up for everyone else. I don't put it in my contract or insist upon it but I've usually been asked or invited to get my food first in those situations.

  • @nmelcam1
    @nmelcam1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    On point 22 about the meals, in my experience as long as you create a great relationship with the couple and family members, they actually take care of you and offer you meals ahead of everybody or at the very least when the meals start, they themselves get you your own plate or have someone get it for you :-)
    I've never asked to get meals ahead of anyone and even less put it in writing, b 95% or more of the times, the couples family will take good care of you.

    Been second-shooting weddings for 3 years now, I guesstimate over 200x by now (approx 70x per year) and you gave some great advice, but I don't think the title fits. For eg. you don't need sunscreen to be a good photographer. But I have a question, though; why do you carry a monopod? I've never used it for wedding photography. Genuinely curious.
    Otherwise a good video, but it's more a tips and general advice video than information on how to improve your wedding photography. My one piece of advice I can offer to other viewers is to think how a normie or even amateur photog would photograph something and then shoot it completely different. I always aim to make people wonder how 'that photo' was taken.

      @charlesball9977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    4) Why would you ever bounce a flash off to the side of your subject? Flash is there to fill the shadows, help to overcome difficult lighting situations but not to create a new problem by "two-facing" your subject. Hiding flash in general is a good and needed tip though, I agree.
    8) If the colors are bad, deal with it in post or just face the truth that there will be some bad images. If the image is fine in color, it will most likely be fine in B&W as well. But you cannot save bad (& especially blurred) shots by just converting them into B&W. Strongly disagree.
    9) On a wide angle, maybe you can go with 1/focal lenght. But if you are shooting at anything above 35mm and there are people covering more than 1/2 of the image, you need a shutter speed of under 1/250th. I even shot cocktail hour outside and even people hugging the couple resulted in slight motion blur at 1/250th. If you are far away from the subject, or you do a group or ambient shot, lower speeds are fine. But portraits or closeups at any focal length need to be at 1/320th or 1/400th ideally if you dont want to risk sudden movement to ruin your shot.
    13) YES! One of the best tips ever. Let the couple do a list, let them give the list to someone and just stay with the couple in one place during group photos. So I dont need to shout for people to come and they dont need to run around and fetch everyone for the photos.
    & The rest of the tips)
    Really good stuff, everyone needs to always follow those tips. They are basic knowledge that every wedding photographer needs to have to work flawlessly and professional.

      I am just seeing this. Check on craigslist in your local area or any local creative hiring app (Thumbtack and Shotzy are not bad to start out). Almost every other shoot I do, I hire a third or fourth shooter to shadow and/or observe. Sometimes I can't always pay esp if I have a 2 and third shooter already and the pay is low. But the experience is ALWAYS golden for the "intern". You'll be surprised how much you can learn just by observing a GREAT and experienced Wedding photographer!

    How do you recommend using flash in an outdoor reception that is dark? If you cant technically bounce light

    Absolute spot on advice. Here in the UK there are far too many cowboys who not only make a crap job of the pictures, but who don't respect the boundaries of a wedding day. If they took your advice life would be easier for all of us

    I would add: experiment with poses not your gear and get to know the limits of it. From experience your sharp f2.8 MF lens might work in studio and with static staged poses, butduring the event people just can't seem to stand still long enough.

    Hi Taylor, can you do a wedding without a flash by increasing your ISO?

    • @TaylorJacksonPhoto
      @TaylorJacksonPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. I rarely use a flash unless I need to

    • @ngoziigwe17
      @ngoziigwe17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taylor Jackson so how do you compensate for the lack of flash? I just shot my second wedding but we were told just 5 mins into the civil service that flash wasn’t allow. So I shot on 400 ISO but I have noisy shots. I want to practice without flash for the future. So what advice can you give pls?
