James Ellory was bory in 1948 in Los Angeles, CA the city that has served as the inspiration for his acclaimed crime novels. From the 50's from its fabulous mansions to its sizzling nightclubs it is a sprawling center of corruption and dangerous passions. Our logo in Los Angeles CA use to be utopia and family values, we decided that, the politicians & government brings in the dregs of the earth. However, people seem to think that American's are the worst corrupt people, which is untrue-Crimes does pay, whoever said it didn't needs which we hope it didn't, needs to analyze a bit further.

I can't help but feel Ellroy is a one-trick gimmick writer. He reflects really nothing about LA besides post WWII seedy nostalgia.

That's a long running, extensively influential, Oscar winning, best selling single gimmick then. A gimmick most authors would do anything to have. You should check out his "Underworld USA" trilogy. That includes: Book #1 "American Tabloid" from 1995. It is based in numerous cities including Dallas, Las Vegas, Washington DC among other locations. It is about the rise and demise of JFK. Many people consider it his best book. It was Time Magazine's Book of the Year for 1995. #2 "The Cold Six Thousand" from 2001. It begins with JFK's Assassination and ends after the MLK & RFK Assassinations. Las Vegas plays a big role in the story. LA Times Best Book of 2001. #3 "Blood's A Rover" the last of the trilogy from 2009. Washington DC and J, Edger Hoover play large roles, as does Howard Hughes. Very good book as well. "American Tabloid" is probably my favorite of the 3, but I really liked "Blood's A Rover" as well. You may wanna check them out. Definitely worth your time. Stephen King reviewed "Blood's A Rover" for Entertainment Weekly and absolutely loved it. He has said the audiobook is the best he has ever experienced. Just a friendly suggestion. Ellroy is not for everyone and I get that.

Practically nothing about Ellroy's writing is nostalgic. His settings are sordid, heinous dens of iniquity that no healthy person would want to actually live in.

That's like saying Stephen King is a one trick pony because he writes a lot of horror.

@@allsystemsgo8678 Right?!🙄 He started life very young living this Hollywood Noir nightmare when his mother was murdered and has become an amazing writer despite or because of it. No tricks here, just pure talent.
