  • Cockpit scenes filmed with approval, in partnership with Envoy Air Inc., under Part 91... Regardless of which airline you dream to fly for, Initial Operating Experience (IOE) is the last, and most exciting, step of your airline training. Your first flight in the actual jet will be a normal revenue flight with passengers onboard! You'll be flying with a highly experienced training Captain who's there to teach you the ins and outs of daily flight operations. Are you excited for your first flight?

    While it wasn't easy to get approval for this kind of filming around airline operations (especially in the cockpit), I know how important it is for all of you who are dreaming to become professional pilots to see this view. When I was a young student pilot, I remember how it felt to watch videos about the career I dreamed of.... Simply put, the videos kept me motivated! I want you to walk away from these videos with the same feeling. If you've ever wanted to become an airline pilot, let me know what you want to learn about the career in the comments below. Much more to come soon! Thanks for checking it out guys!

    I have followed you sporadically for a number of years. I just had an epiphany.... I resented you and I apologize sincerely.
    You have earned your way into that right seat , by sucking it up , studying diligently and maturing . Like my former profession , your’s ( Aviation) typically eats their young and spits them out. High attrition, burnout , stress , circadian rhythm disturbances leads many to just move into something easier. A great read I highly recommend is “ Squawk 7700 “. A young man went to an Aviation Bachelors program , Freight Dog and eventually ended up in a regional that stuck him in Puerto Rico for his IOE etc. .....
    Fortunately for you , your strong vision for your goal has un wavered and you succeeded.
    I congratulate you Sir on this huge milestone.

    Great video Swayne! Good luck with your career. I remember how excited I was when I checked out on the 727 with Delta. I was a Line Check Airman (LCA) not too long after. In the USAF we had our IOE and after that when you checked out as an AC (aircraft commander, same as Captain in the airlines) you went on a 5 or 6 day line mission. This included an ocean crossing and legs "down-range". That meant not to Italy, Spain or the UK but to Egypt, the Mid-East or Sub-Saharan Africa. A long time to have an LCA watching over you. Here's fuel for debate- 125 miles out of ATL we reduced power for a descent from FL350 to FL 240. The left engine shuttered violently and quit. The other pilot was reaching for the mic button to tell ATC and I said let's wait a bit. Sometimes you need help and need to tell ATC right away, not this time. After all it was an idle thrust descent. We ran the checklists, briefed the flight attendants, made a PA a sent an ACARS message to company. That was done as we prepared to level at 240 at which time we announced our malfunction to ATC and declared an emergency. ATC as expected wanted to help and needed the usual info. We calmly replied and could converse without putting them off as we tried to run our checks amid a barrage of calls and inquiries. Weigh in guys and gals! Happy landings.

    Congratulations Swayne! While I've been a pilot for ages, my career path took me into air traffic control at LA Center and SoCal TRACON. I was forced into retirement due to old age (56), but now I'm picking up my flying again. This was an excellent video, and parallels ATC training, with the stress, anxiety, and sense of relief (and for me, disbelief) that here I was doing a dream job and getting paid for it.
    Hit me up if you are out this way, I'll set you up for a tour at SCT. That goes for the rest of the pilots here too. If ATC gives you a hard time, tell them Radar Queen (it's a long story) said to knock it off.

    Swayne, I just came across your videos and love 'em. I was a CFIIMEI, taught for a Japanese Airline (ANA), then flew for a Delta Connection Carrier for 7 years on the CRJ-700. Loved every minute of it. I lost my medical and changed careers. I can get my medical back now, but it's going to cost me around $20k to jump through the FAA hoops, so I can't afford that at this time. So I can only dream of getting back in the cockpit. I miss it so much (tear rolling down my face now). So watching your videos brings back so many great memories of when I was in your shoes.

And yes, I flew mainline flying and finally I was apart of the crew as a Purser Flight Attendant. Purser means Chief Flight Attendant and you going through training to be a Leader. Leading an working with a crew of 14 team members it was crazy. But I did it and I was happy. So, in working with Captions and First Officers you guys are great to work with and yes I have been in the cockpit during crew trips and Jump Seating going home and I have enjoyed flying every single time....Again, fly safe and enjoy!!!!!!

    Thank you so much for posting these kinds of videos. I am currently attending Texas State Technical College in Waco, Texas for Aircraft Pilot Training. I am weeks away from taking my Commercial SEL initial checkride, and then Comm Multi shortly after that. I have been watching your videos since the beginning and you have motivated and pushed me through my path to achieve my dream of being a Captain flying international routes with American. I basically have tried to follow your path and go to Mokulele Airlines and then eventually go to Envoy. But I decided to give back to the youth of the aviation community and have scheduled my CFI CFII flight course with American Flyers in Addison, Texas, then teach back at Texas State Technical College as a CFI. I actually just passed my FOI written! I was invited to interview with Envoy about 3 months ago. I received a hotel room and then an initial interview with my private instrument SEL for the cadet position, the next day but then was informed that I was not supposed to be invited to the interview until I had my Commercial Multi checkride completed. The recruiter then ordered me an Uber back to the hotel to grab my belongings and drive back to Waco. But man, I have been truly inspired form the beginning by your videos and tried to start my own youtube channel but it is obviously not as followed as your channel. I would be greatly honored and would love to talk to you about your experience with Envoy so far, If you would like, can you please email me @ richardrensing@ymail.com to get in touch. Thank you very much.

    Congrats Swayne! You have a great career ahead of you, and if I'm guessing right you'll find yourself at mainline in no time.
    A comment from a different perspective: I've flown nine types in my career so have been to the sim and done IOE/OE more than a bit. I've also been a sim instructor and a Line Check Airman doing IOE and line checks. I can honestly tell you that conducting IOE is the hardest and most rewarding job I've ever done in airline flying. Most people are like you: eager and highly motivated, and are a pleasure to work with. Some take to the new aircraft naturally, but some have to work harder to get signed off than others.
    You have no idea how satisfying it is to see any IOE pilot succeed (but especially those who initially struggle). It's a wonderful feeling to park the aircraft on the last flight (the line check), do the checklist, and shake their hand and welcome them to the airline. The same goes for people checking out for their first time as a Captain. It's a huge day for them, and I was always honored to be part of it.
    Best regards and fly safe!

    Awesome video Swayne... It's beautiful when a person stays "focused", and one day it all comes together... You have had a awesome journey at such a young age.. I was looking at your video a few days ago on your first solo flight.. Now I had a wonderful opportunity to see you fly a jet for the first time.. Before you know it, you will be Captain Swain flying a 777 heavy.. Congratulations..!!!!! Thank you for sharing...

      WhiteLinesBlueSkies, I appreciate the encouragement but for an airline career there is such a thing. I made choices in my younger years that kept me from pursuing that route which I'm ok with. At least I can get back up in the air after years of not flying.

    Although my flying is limited to the Boeing 747-400 in the simulator, I always tried to hand-fly the plane as much as I could. On a short flight from New York to Boston and back, I could easily do the entire flight by hand.

My son just got his commercial rating and is wrapping up his junior year of college. I'm having a ball flying our Grumman with him and will miss his company when he finally graduates and finds that perfect pilot job. This video is very inspiring! Good luck as you begin your fabulous career! Fly safe and fly often my friend!

    New subscriber here! In the past few days I’ve watched numerous videos of yours and I absolutely love all of them! I’m currently pursuing a pilot slot in the Air Force (qualified on the AFOQT, which is the first step) and I’ve recently decided that I want to simply fulfill my 10-year contract with the Air Force and then pursue the commercial pilot route with American Airlines (preferably). I could write an entire essay on my wishes but I won’t; long story short, you’re an inspiration to me and I wish you the best! Your parents must be extremely proud of you!

I wish nothing less than my personal best for your continued success! I'm enjoying the journey right along with the rest of us! Always safe and fun flying throughout your career Swayne! That was an awesome video, huge congrats for making your dream come true and thanks for going through the effort to share. Its a bit different here in Europe, we dont call it IOE, but simply ‘line training’, which I essentially the same. Minimum to be released for line check is 40 sectors, which is roughly what it takes to be familiar with the aircraft, but to be really comfortable it takes around 200-300h post line check, because you need to make mistakes, face bad weather- low visibility, snow, thunderstorms, high winds etc. before it gets easier. (And another 200-300 until you also become ‘efficient’ and company minded to where you can make decisions in non standard situations).

    • @princeargos
      @princeargos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Intriguing how different the minimums are. At the company i work for in Aus, our minimum for direct entry pilots (those with prior general aviation experience) is 100hrs line training plus the 8 sector line check. For cadets with no multi or turbine command time (similar to Swayne), it is 150hrs minimum plus an 8 sector line check.

    • @LinkinLoris
      @LinkinLoris 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jirik Haselgrove That makes sense, although. one can fly 100hrs doing 20 legs or so (of which you only do 10 as PF, therefor takeoffs and landings), or you do a certain amount of sectors, where you are guaranteed a minimum amount of legs. You dont really learn anything during cruise.
