      Also, with experience, do you start flying bigger planes after more experience?

    I have been a commuter for most of my career. One of the considerations to keep in mind when deciding to move to base is the stability of the base. I have seen bases upsize and downsize, or even close completely. I have friends with Delta who moved to the Cincinnati area many years ago when it was a major hub, only to later be kicked out of the base when it downsized significantly. There are many Delta pilots who lived in the DFW area who either had to move or became commuters when Delta's major DFW hub was shut down. There are a few places where you can be relatively secure, ORD for United for example. But as unstable as mainline bases are, regional bases can be even worse. I have a friend from my first airline who had five bases close on hime at our first airline. We used to joke that he should bid for the small base where our company had its HQ because they would never close that, they had been there for decades. So ultimately he and his wife made the decision to move there. Four months after they moved, the company closed the base and decided to move the company HQ to another state.

    Very nice video; I've never seen your stuff before, but your content is very high quality.
    I'm a current Airbus Captain and have been at my airline 28 years, 18 of them commuting.
    Commuting is a complete and total grind and doesn't get better as you get older (though hopefully your trips will). There's reasons to do it (mine involved taking care of my Mom) and sometimes it's just the price of doing business, but I am so happy to drive to work now.
    BTW I am very impressed with the Envoy commuting arrangements, particularly the hotels. That's huge and pretty uncommon, certainly among the majors.
    I wish you the best and hope you have a great career! Fly safe!

    Great video, commuting is really frowned upon these days especially after Buffalo. The FAA should introduce FTL limits for commuters with this in mind e.g. crews can only commute if the duty is achievable if they were rostered by the Airline and rest periods again the same.

  • @LongTimeNoPuck
    @LongTimeNoPuck 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You ARE a professional pilot. Best wishes in your career. From all the negative things I heard about commuter airlines, I would feel safe knowing you are in the cockpit. May all your commuting flights be "on time". And the right turn out of ORD was awesome!

  • @Gmaspoiledbrat
    @Gmaspoiledbrat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's also a tax angle on going towards commuting. If you live in a state that doesn't have income tax but your closest base, in another state, has income tax, might be better off commuting to avoid state income tax especially if there is a base in your state. Example, living in Clark County, WA where PDX is the closest airport and willing to commute to Seattle.

    It is a personal choice for sure. My wife is and FA and has a crashpad in her base. Commuting from our house to the airport and then to her base would be complicated so the crashpad helps. She does commute to other airports when she has picked up additional flights but she does have to go the day before or after depending on what they are.

    Being an airline pilot looks like a brutal job. I have several friends that work for airlines and none of them enjoy it any more. They loved it at first, but after a couple years their opinion changed dramatically and now it's just a source of income.
    I fly my own little plane and I'm glad I made the decision to keep it as a hobby. This life style does not suit my desires one bit and sometimes taking a passion and making it a job isn't always the best idea.
    This is in no way a reflection of the quality of your videos. I've actually enjoyed watching them so far, quite informative. I just felt like chiming in after watching a bunch because I kept thinking that same after watching every one: God damn, this is a tough living. I work to live, not the other way around.

    • @Mae-nw6cv

    • @mikep9604
      @mikep9604 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mae-nw6cv - Maybe it's because especially if flying long haul routes there will be nights at a hotel, and you are away from home, and maybe you are at work at Christmas and on other holidays. But there are pilots who fly short haul routes, and usually get home every day. And sometimes the working day can start very early in the morning, but that happens also in other jobs, so it's not special. People are different, and of course there are different opinions. Pilots I know are happy with their work, and they do it because they love flying.

    • @SwayneMartinPilot

    Keep it up

  • @ryanryessir
    @ryanryessir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think that's a reason why I'm not so keen on airlines like Envoy... or Republic etc. They have all their "junior" bases in places like New York, Chicago, Detroit where it's SUPER expensive to live. I don't think it'd be very enjoyable for someone who's from Florida like me living in cities with less than 50,000 people and relatively lower living costs to want to move there. So commuting seems the only option... but then it comes with all of those drawbacks etc.

    • @bagels377

      Im in the same situation my dude

    • @ryanryessir
      @ryanryessir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bagels377 I'll be headed to the airlines in less than 2 years. I'm currently almost done with my CSEL through a University/Part 141 so I'm really having to look early ahead and see what would be best. Cause most people as soon as you get that CSEL in 141 or 250 hours in 61 then you usually go and join a cadet program. But like once you commit... you pretty much commit and I don't want to end up being stuck somewhere I'm not happy. Why I considered Silver Airways here in Florida because 1.) I'd have turboprop multi engine time over turbojet which is actually slightly better imo, 2.) I can easily live near base, 3.) They have a flow through to Frontier or Spirit and flight privileges on almost any airline which is 10x better. But in long run I won't make as much or probably be able to fly large jets in my career.... decisions upon decisions my dude. Whats your situation like?

    Thank you for the video! Just subscribed. It's awesome to see how pilots live their life. Especially for people like me who wish to be a pilot but took another career path. Thank you again.

    It is a big decision. You got that right. Maybe I'm an idiot or maybe I have a valid reason, but in my opinion everything you pointed out in this video is the reason why I chose not to pursue an aviation career with the airlines or aviation in general. It sucks because I've invested the money and time in a dream only to realize later it's not what I thought it would be or planned for with all of life's other responsibilities.

    Great video man! Thanks for keeping things real and showing how things really are. I see all these fake ass people on Instagram showing their "perfect" life or career and portraying false realities. The truth is that we know that all careers have their awesome, and not so awesome things. Coming from a family of pilots I know how rewarding/great flying can be, and also the not so great things, so good job, these videos really help future aviators, keep it up!

    Hi Swayne, can you have a think about an intro your videos? Start of by telling us your name, age and where you work. Maybe a quick montage of where you came from, flying small planes and a few quick pics of your past. Otherwise you’re getting straight into your content. Think Trent Palmer style for the first small part perhaps... ?

    This is my 23rd year of airline flying. I commuted for about 6 of them. Absolutely, without question, do not commute if you have any choice. Short term, for a junior upgrade ***MAYBE*** but the hit to QOL is huge. Driving to work makes it seem like a whole different job.

    Very ironic on a video about commuting and doing multi day trips, at 3:33 into the video pushing back there is an Allegiant Airbus. Allegiant only does day trips. The only hotels we stay in are for TDY, training and some charters. Good video btw.

    really good video, most of the future pilots as myself some years ago dont know the impact of being away from home. you will miss so much from your friends and family. of course its nice to get to know new people and new places but some take it easier than others and i guess on the long turn can make you sick if you are unhappy. i am working in europe so working abroad is really something else, diffrent language, diffrent culture.
    i hate to commute. but still got lucky i can drive with the car, first base was 6hr one way second is now 4hrs and in june luckily i got one which is only 2 hrs away but still too long to commute daily. cant imagine how nice it must be to be based at home, where you actually can do stuff and meet people on your standby...

    Love small town USA, don’t want to live in a big city, but also don’t want to commute. I’m gonna have to compromise somewhere, thanks for the info.
