    The ships with the blue and gold stripes on the stack, with the USNS designation are from the Military Sealift Command. The ships are crewed by civilian mariners, mostly as support to the fleet, but also hospital ships like USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy. It would be the actual ship's crew, not medical staff, that are MSC civilian mariners. I served on 4 of the older tankers in the 80's, Truckee, Mississinewa, Pawcatuck and Waccamaw, sometimes out of NAVSTA NORVA (Naval Station, Norfolk, VA). Got to refuel both the USS New Jersey and Iowa. Later, I worked at Naval Aviation Depot at NAS, left in 1990 just before it closed. (@ Bill Grandaddy, I was in 650 Maintenance). NADEP would take F14 Tomcats and A6 Intruders and take them down to the last rivet and rebuild them, including the engines. I could write for year about the cool stuff I saw working for both commands.

    Looks like they mix all the ships together now. Destroyers and Submariines used to be a half-mile or so to the South, at the D&S Piers. Wonder why they named them that...
    My first ship was USS Puget Sound (AD-38). It was a repair ship and we stayed tied to the same pier for about nine months. Then, with a big two-day production, we moved one pier over for another bunch of months. Big excitement!
    Anyhow, sticks in my memory, arriving at Norfolk airport from the West Coast on an October night, and having a shuttle van drop me off with my seabag at the head of the pier. The Puget Sound was huge, and had that big "D38" all lit up in white numbers on the bow.
    After that, I served on DDG-5, and those piers were our Home Port. But we were only there for a week or two at a time, between deployments to the Med or on training missions in the Atlantic.

She was brand new and i was on her 1st two deployments, including the around the world cruise in 98 to San Diego. Shes back in Norfolk now getting her reactors refueled. Never was a peir 14 while i was there tho, it stopped at 12.

    • @picklepee2771
      @picklepee2771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reactors don't really take that long to refuel it's just that the ship gets a complete refurbishment from the keel up.
      Years of painting, grinding, welding, blasting, brazing etc.

Now my neutral duty station, Naval Facility Cape Hatteras, my aforementioned ship, and my rate(SK) have all been decommissioned. I feel quite the relic compared to the 21st century Navy.🇺🇲👍✌

    AT~(3:56) you say:
    "The ammunition you see is the same size as the ammunition that exploded."
    Correction the Iowa's shells did not explode.
    It was the Powder charges that ignited while the breach of the gun was still open.
    The powder bags were being rammed into the breach..
    It was a out of battery propellant detonation.
    Had the 16" shell exploded inside the gun tube there would have been far more casualties and possibly the loss of the ship."?"

    I actually disliked my tour there. Got there in 1986-90 (85-90). While on the Med deployment in 89, came back to some improvements which was better facilities for Enlisted, they just built a Sport Club (which I am sure is closed) and a few better restaurants. Had to live in Nimitz Hall while PCU in 86 which was depressing'. Nothing to do there. Then they still had the "Blue Law" (everything is closed on Sundays), which was lifted in 89' so on Sundays there was NOTHING to do off base during that time. Was there when a huge fight broke out at the E Club ( Trade winds?) which made the news, I think that was 88 or 89 and remember a sailor being stupid and punching a female base police officer, he got pounced on and dragged away. Other than that, sadly the Air Force at the time had better things for their Enlisted. I think things have changed for Enlisted Navy (but I am sure they are still cry about it). Bet they got rid of the phone banks off of Pier 12 because everyone has cell phones today (phone banks, what is that? you had to pay money for making a call?). For anyone going in the U.S. Navy (or any branch that is), and are about 18-19, do minimum of 2 enlistments, you are young. I should have done shore duty outside of Norfolk, and may have liked it enough to make it a career. But I do look back on it and great times, seen half the world in the shortest amount of time. I know a Air Force puke (retired) and he's been to Missouri and California in 20 years, wow, I've been to 9 different countries. GO NAVY!

    To put it into perspective (again), all the aircraft that operate from the 11 US Navy aircraft carriers combined form the worlds second largest air force, behind the US Air Force.
    Edit: If there are 6 aircraft carriers here, then wouldn't it be a very high priority target should the US go to war? What are the defenses here?

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The US will not start a world war. If other countries attack the US, the only mind set for the US military and its citizens is OFFENSE after that lol.

      I think the air forces of China and Russia exceed the USN. 6 carriers are home port there, but 3-4 of them should be on cruises . The other 2-3 require 4-6 months of maintenance and training of crew for their next cruise. Collectively, something like 40% of ships are in port for maintenance, workup, etc. Some are out of service for 1-2 years for upgrading or deep maintenance.
