People watch these videos, and I'm sure it seems impressive to most of them. But they will never know the feeling of awe you get from being up close to any of them. They are huge ships. Then when you see your first super carrier in person, it just takes your breath away. Still hard to believe that anything that large can actually float.
Being alongside of a Nimitz class birdfarm was awe-inspiring from the 04 level of our old Coontz/Farragut class DDG. It's very hard to explain exactly how enormous these carriers are. I'm from the era of Tomcats, Vikings and Intruders. Designation: Old Phart mark 1 mod 0 !
I still remember the first time I saw my ship (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69). It was about 2100 and I could see those big letters lit up from all the way down at the other end of the road that runs along the piers. All I could do was look up at the enormous beast as I walked up the pier dragging my sea bag. I saw Enterprise once the day we got back from my second deployment in 2010. She had just gotten out of the yards and she looked amazing but odd still to the eye of someone accustomed to a Nimitz class carrier.
My dad worked on the USS Bulkey, USS Harry S. Truman, and the USS George HW Bush, and I can say from watching him leave and come home and going on base with him., they are the most massive ships I have seen. I even had the chance to go on the George HW Bush and my dad gave me a tour. I also had thanksgiving dinner on the Bulkey and did a halloween event on the Geaorge HW Bush, and they are truly amazing.I also remember the ships have distinct smell to them, not in a bad way though. I remember good times on Naval Station Norfolk, I remember my dad leaving and him coming home, and I will remember Naval Station Norfolk for that

It was when I learned that they had 164 Tomahawks on board and that their 3D-Radar had a reach of 800 nautical miles, I knew there and than that all our German Navy was just a pathetic waste of taxes.
Better question is does it still smell like the same. I assume you didn't share a birth and didn't have to smell some one else's farts in your bedding.
On the big E, to make the ship safe they have to rip the ship apart in order to remove the reactors so they can be safely disposed of. At that point it would cost to much to put her back together again to make a museum out of her. But parts of her will go to the new Enterprise just like parts of the previous Big E went into this one.
It's not just that. These super-carriers, even the old ones, are too "modern" in their construction to be turned into museums. Instead of scrapping CV-66 America, they did a month-long sink-ex on her in 2005 to see how durable they really are against modern weapons. After a month of conducting those tests, she still floated, so they scuttled her (conducting one final test while they were at it). The data gathered during these tests is being used in the designs of the Gerard R. Ford -class, and future carrier designs. That a +50-year-old ship can withstand such weapons fire and survive represents construction secrets that the US Navy would rather civilians (and potentially foreign spies) NOT be allowed to wander around and inspect at their leisure.
The big E isn't in Norfolk it's in Huntington ingalls shipyard in newport news it's been there for the last 3 years they are pulling the old spent nuclear fuel out the reactors from the carrier

Navy ships should be named after either naval personnel who died in combat serving their country (like the USS Sullivans), or, the ideals that America stands for (ie: Freedom, Enterprise, Intrepid, Independence etc...) NOT, most certainly NOT after politicians.
Those politicians served in the navy before they became politicians with two exception. Ronald Reagan served in the Army along with George Washington. I'm assuming you are going to strip the George Washington of its name then? He does not fit your criteria.

Real Tomcat tweekers were stationed at Miramar back in the day 🤘🤛VF124,VFC113
It is illegal to take pictures/video of military ships. It is considered as spying.
와...미해군의 성지답다 몇년내로 꼭 가봐야지 ㅠㅠㅠ
Australian navy should buy one of the tri cruisers as a flagship
Great video!
I’ve got to load those roro ships as part of the army and those big usns which are owned by the us army most of the landing crafts I’ve got to load. Fun times
wow does it bring back memories
I miss being in the navy and being on that base
Amazing video thank you very much.
Interesting all those support type ships.
Most people don't realize that the reason the US is the most powerful navy in the world isn't because we've got a whole bunch of Burke-class Destroyers - it's because we have the logistics ships to keep our vessels moving, in combat-ready condition, on a regular and predictable schedule.
And they are crewed by civilians, with a few navy folks here and there.
I hope to go underway some day on the USS San Antonio
1:15 on right you can see a 3 apartments and on the middle of 2 apartments that's where my grandpa lives
And he also served on uss wisconsin
missing on the Destroyers the Big fat Marshall Stack and the Song Castles made of Sand when such a Ship comes Home
I was an AMS onboard the Enterprise.
Excellent video !!
Look at all those floating prisons...beautiful.
hey thats what the sailors call it
Very impressive 😲
Grew up around ship repair in Guam in the 60's none of the ships look like the old destroyers and battleships I grew up around.
Not even the Wisconsin?
@@blaze6400 yes the Wisconsin does :)
But, it's sure an exception didn't realize that it was still in service
@@Sneezy1956 It isn't in service but it is still around
It’s heartbreaking to see the USS Enterprise looking like that. Does anyone know why she wasn’t made into a museum?
I do.
They have the new Ford class carriers Kennedy and enterprise being built in newport news
Very nice video
i missed Naval Station Norfolk 🥺
I live near Quincy ma and we have the USS Salem by the bridge and I always have to look at just fascinated by the ships and the history pretty cool . Never been on one we have a place like an hour away called battleship cove I think in Fall River ma . I have a 7 year old doughter but she’s more interested in her stupid game
I wanna visit that in late 2020, will the Enterprise still be there or will it be scrapped till then? Id really like to see it as long its possible
xxcrysiscgx _ it’s going to take few years, I’m hearing late 2021 before it’s completely done. It could be sooner. Well worth the trip. I drive by her everyday.
Hopefully the new Enterprise will be far enough along that they can get a picture of both of them together before 65 is finally scrapped.
@@davidpearson3304 That would be an amazing photo
Shame to see what Enterprise looks like now. Wish there was some way to preserve it. At least USS Gerald Ford is looking good now.
Imagine those two ships are talking to each other
Sir, you have no clue how much I wish it was actually good
I Could barely read the descriptions fast enough. You couldn't give it another second or two ? Jeesh
I wonder of they could do a SLEP program for the Flight one Arleigh Burke class DD's and bring them up to flight three standards.
They really should of made enterprise a museum and put it right next to the Wisconsin as two relics of world war 2.
its the USS arleigh Burke getting scrapped or updated?
Excellent vid
I heard there was a Chappaquiddick class, but it sunk.
@@terenfro1975 Of course not. That's just stupid. Its already been named. And none of those politicians died in combat. Please reread the post.
Nice video.
