    A glimpse into the great mind of Matt Johnson. Thank you for sharing some of your ideas and techniques Matt. You make it look so easy but I know it is after much practice that it became second nature to you. For myself, being from a Prog background, it will be some time before I get that frluidity but I will get there. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to your next videos.

    Personal notes:
    5:12 "Ok, it's in C."
    5:16 "Got it, a 6th chord, going to a 9th. Easy enough."
    5:23 "6th and 9th again, lower inversion. Ok, cool."
    5:38 "Never mind, I'm out."
    * *sobs gently* *

      just start slow, doesn't have to be 120 bpm!?!@

    • @MrMargaretScratcher
      @MrMargaretScratcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm just trying to work that one out now, slowed it down to .05 speed on here and I've got quite a way to go but I'm getting there...
      To get you started, here's how I've broken it down :
      (LH) C (Pinky)
      (LH) C octave up (Thumb
      (RH) E,A,C (Thumb, middle, pinky)
      (RH) G,Bb (1st,4th)
      (RH) D (Thumb)
      (LH) C (Thumb)
      (RH) C,E,A (Thumb, middle, pinky)
      (RH) D,G (2nd, 4th)
      (RH) Bb (thumb)
      (LH) G (thumb)
      that's about where I'm up to, and I can only really play the first part in rhythm...

    • @MrMargaretScratcher
      @MrMargaretScratcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So today I had it pretty much figured out and started playing along at 70bpm, half speed. I gradually notched up the tempo and soon enough I had it up to 130 bpm half speed so went back to 70 bpm playing at normal speed, and again gradually sped it up as I got comfortable. Now I can *just about* play it at full tilt (About 115bpm), so about an hour and a half to get from playing it at 35 bpm to 115 bpm.

    Absolutely loved this - it's one of the most useful videos I've ever seen. I'm a very novice keyboardist (only really noodle around with it, or use it to pick out chords), so most of my composition is done with guitar or bass (instruments I'm actually experienced with), or just the piano roll. One of my biggest challenges when composing music is writing parts for keys. Even knowing music theory, writing realistic-sounding parts for keys is difficult, because they tend to be so much more layered than any other instrument. Writing a horn part on a guitar is one thing; writing a piano part is another thing entirely.
    Looking forward to more videos like this!

    Loved some of your comments. :-) Hopefully gigging will be a thing again sooner than later! :-) And loved seeing the tensions you are playing on some of those funk harmonies. Would love to see more insight into how you approach improv. There's a lot in funk that is similar to jazz, and the keyboards always sit on that line between supporting the rhythm section and taking the spotlight. (Unfortunately, my arranging skills are better than my performing skills, but I'm working on it! :-)) We want the funk! Give up the funk!

And then the ending stabs with sola... And then the even better Rob solos and then the vocal embellish! And then your variations Matt. Basically one of my favourites that they all did live. Also with that nice conclusive trumpet line later on in the years. I do like the way you play it Matt wit h that dance'able 90s funk variety

      That's where we all get stuck! Keep looking at the tutorial and try really playing what you hear and see, even if it was one note at a time, all with one finger!
      Stop doodling around and add some focus, keep getting it, keep going into the groove, memorising harmony, note choices, phrases.. it's hard but it will get easier with time and *dedicated practice*!
      This happens to all of us, so I'm writing this as a reminder for myself also! :)
