This is absolutely incredible. Imagine it's early 18th century, you're a poor German farmer, and your ears only have experience with the sounds of wind, rain, hardship, and animals. Then Bach writes this. Your life would be changed forever. My life the same.
Curtis Pro As if a poor farmer of the past has had the chance to experience something like this. Through all times music/theater/arts has been a privilege of the upper classes even at that time. Nowadays we seem to forget that people always used to sing
@@esqrt Bach's cantatas were performed in the regularly church services which took a few hours. But, you are right:Bach worked in the town churches, where especially a farmer don't used to go; they had their own churches in the villages with doubtful musicianship. But I suppose ordinary people also visited the churches in town and heard Bach's music. However, we also have to remind that there wasn't many time for practicing the cantatas Bach wrote the same week, so it might be more prima vista playing than high-class performances as those of the Netherlands Bach Society.
@@esqrt There actually is evidence that on various sunday mornings they had to leave the windows and church doors open so that the masses on Leipzig market square could participate and listen. Contrary to what some snobbish Bachians today believe Bach made music for the man on the street. In BWV 40 for instance Bach ended the cantata with a funny and cheerful piece that resembles the farmer's life in the coutryside with oboes imitating chicken, etc. He wrote it explicitly for farmers so that they would have a nice melody to whistle on their way back home. Unlike unimaginative modern people today, early 18th century people were absolutely able to comprehend what Bach's cantatas were about.

@@jaikee9477 No, Bach did not write his church music "explicitly" (or implicitly) for farmers! The music wasn't performed on a stage before an concert audience. It was performed in the church (either the Thomaskirche or the Nikolaikirche) in galleries placed above and behind the congregation. They couldn't even see the performers. The music was integrated into the Good Friday church service. Bach's passion setting is in two parts because a sermon was given between the parts. Other music was also performed at the Good Friday services. Not just Bach's Passion music. This was not the concert recital you seem to think it was. Nor was it one of the many public Passion oratorios that were performed in Germany at the time.
It takes an exceptionally gifted human being to write something this beautiful. It also takes an exceptionally talented singer to sing it the way it was meant to be sung. What a glorious combination of talents!!! We are truly privileged to be able to enjoy this.
People here have commented on the singer (and rightly so) but I have to say that the string playing is beyond incredible. Perfect intonation, ensemble, and phrasing.
yes. going to these church concerts is a real pleasure as the orchestra is fascinating! the singers are the best as well! I've never known anything but a beautiful time attending these events and if poss, I'd go every night! as for alex potter (just found him tonight), he is truly remarkable! I am stunned by his warmth and naturalness and portrayal... what a gem! he is very, very good! indeed, artists just keep getting better and more amazing! utterly floored yet again!
I'm here because his uncle who sells jams, marmelades, conserves, and other things at a farmer's market told me to check him out. I'm not disappointed.
Are you really his dad? Wow! I bet you really proud of your son. His voice is the most beautiful alto voice i ever heard. Reminds me of James Bowman's voice
@@emanueletagliabue6335 Thanks so much. A great deal is down to the musical skills of his late Mum, but of course it is mainly down to Alex's dedication from when he was a little boy through school, Southwark Cathedral Choir, New College Oxford and his career since then and support from musical directors, fellow singers and musicians in Europe, plus support from his wife and daughters. I am so proud of him - as was his late Mum.
Nous sentons que cet homme chante Bach avec une grande émotion. Cette émotion nous la ressentons à notre tour. C' est bien ce que voulait Bach. Bravo mr Potter, votre voix sert à merveille le génie du grand Jean Sébastien.
The thing about great music is that it naturally attracts great performers, be they soloists or members of the orchestra alike. They combine their hard earned skills. It’s as though they are drawn to the Light to make it shine brighter. And here we have a wonderful example of this fact, with Alex Potter and The Netherlands Bach Society. And then there is Bach……
Today it’s Good Friday. In The Netherlands The Mattheus Passion always nr 1. First time I hear Alex Potter. Wow! What a performance! You let my tears flow, thank you

Little details make their voices look different. He has a more fragile voice. Andreas Scholl sings like more refined and controled. Maybe because of the recording this voice seems much more deeper and acoustic than Scholl's but i dont know who is better.
@@lordchameleon2650 scholl's is more constrained and is highly controlled and he sounds accomplished technically and has a very formal delivery that is intent on perfection in as much as such can be realized - he is Teutonic. Potter is natural and has a warmth expressive of both profound emotive depth and a certain buoyancy that is just below the surface - he excels and is British (of course)! @@carloshamilton3825 He sang in New College, Oxford's famous choir, as did Bowman, much earlier. They are both very much part of the English countertenor tradition.

Such Romantic nonsense.
This is the best performance of this aria I've ever heard. Alex Potter is great singer. Very emotional.
